This story really surprised me. In the beginning I will say I was intrigued and it started to get a little creepy. It all starts with a recent High School grad Frank Baldwin who was in a bad place. This poor guy had so many things to worry himself about. I wished he would have a little peace and quiet. His parents divorced and when I say they hated each other, it is being kind. His mother took the anger out on him and his brother, who we didn’t hear much about. So Frank starts looking for a job and thinks “this is wrong” when he sees the advertisement, but calls anyway. He gets into a conversation with Mr Lansing and he sounds like a wacko, but Frank goes to meet him. When they meet Frank is of course over-thinking and driving himself mentally crazy. The quirkiest rich guy Mr Lansing tells him he will call, and he does and Frank takes the job. He moves to southern California. All places but fictional things, in my mind I think, cause I live here, it is So Cal. I think Frank was by Camp Pendelton and maybe lived on the beach by San Clemente. In my mind that is where he was.
At this point all that you can feel about Frank is that being alone is a good thing one day and not so good the next. The fact that he constantly hears his mother’s negative things about life play on a loop in his head is painful. I felt bad that he was never really allowed to be a teenager. When he was on his own, instead of thinking about upbeat things he was thinking he had no life skills. He never learned to cook anything and found after the first trip, grocery shopping sucked. Instead of being happy and carefree by the ocean, he was thinking it is expensive to feed myself. He found to look and hear the ocean had a calming effect on him. When he worked a little too hard he went to swim and that relaxed him. The effect that divorce has on kids is really evident here.
He gets involved in a very clandestine relationship with a neighbor Sylvia. No spoilers, but the entire thing is so secretive, poor Frank drives himself almost insane thinking and over thinking. He needs a spring break vacation in Cancun with a few good men! That is ME thinking too much again. Well the story unravels and it takes me on a ride that I was not expecting. The ending blows me away. This really is something that a lot of people would find appealing. Besides the angst, the romance, the suspense, there is a certain character in Frank that was so appealing. I loved it and I am proud to offer a kindle and a paperback for a giveaway. I also have to read the other books this talented author wrote.
