Nan’s Story by Paige Farmer #spotlight

Book Description

Publication Date: June 17, 2012
How can you possibly win when you are your own worst enemy?
Nancy Elaine Bower (Nan to those who know her well) weathers a childhood overshadowed by her father’s alcoholism and mother’s martyrdom only to be thrust into an adulthood littered with landmines of self destruction. Each erratic decision she makes twists and contorts her life in unthinkable ways, until finally she’s left in a crumpled heap on her mother’s doorstep.
It’s 1960, two years later, and Nan still meets each day as if a stranger intent on doing her harm. Hiding in plain sight from the world outside, she spends most of her time trying to win back the affections of her young son while thwarting her mother’s ceaseless interference. As she begins to fantasize of a life more normal, the serendipitous return of an old friend breathes a spark of hope into this possibility. Before she can allow herself to consider walking away from her past though, Nan must escape the unyielding bars of circumstance that surround her, and while she’ll be required to relive her greatest nightmare in order to do so, there is no guarantee of her release.

Paige Farmer has spent the past six years working and reworking Nan’s Story until the voice she sought was the one you (the reader) can now unmistakably hear. Nan’s Story is the first of her novels to be published, with two more scheduled for release in early 2013, including a prequel to Nan’s Story focusing on Elsie Bower Hamilton’s evolution to the sharp, take-no-prisoners woman that Nan’s Story readers have come to love.

Ms. Farmer lives in Southern Maine with her husband, children & cats, as well as the neighbor’s menagerie of horses, goats, dogs and ducks.

She spends her days writing beneath a plaque that reads:

“Careful or you’ll end up in my next novel”

  • Truer words were never written.

Unbreak Me by Lexi Ryan @writerlexiryan #review @Tale_of_Reviews

unbreak me

“If you’re broken, I’ll fix you…

I must admit, I could not believe the harsh self punishment Maggie, the main character put on herself.  She had no confidence, no value and actually made me feel so sorry for her. There are a few secrets that were given out in very small doses. What I thought about the secrets was WOW. They were pretty good, very unique and set up in a way that left you wanting more. They were excellent reveals. Her family, although I can’t discuss them were a case for Dr. Phil or Maury.

What I did not like was the fact that she let people call her names and live to repeat them over and over. What I also did not like was the fact that she thought she was worthless. I guess that makes a good writer. I mean if they get you amped up and pissed off then they did a good job right?

Maggie let herself believe she was useless and worthless. Pretty much damaged goods. A slut. A failure. The story is told in and around a very small town. Think that before you read it. If you have never experienced the close knit small town feels, this book will make you want to run from any town with a population of less than 10,000

When Maggie has an epiphany about Asher, she gives him a chance. He was the bright spot of the book. Asher Logan helps her using his own life lessons. The high profile life he leads shows Maggie that he can overcome so she can too.

“If you’re broken, I’ll fix you…

I’m only twenty-one and already damaged goods. A slut. A failure. A disappointment to my picture-perfect family as long as I can remember. I called off my wedding to William Bailey, the only man who thought I was worth fixing. A year later and he’s marrying my sister. Unless I ask him not to…

“If you shatter, I’ll find you…”

But now there’s Asher Logan, a broken man who sees the fractures in my façade and doesn’t want to fix me at all. Asher wants me to stop hiding, to stop pretending. Asher wants to break down my walls. But that means letting him see my ugly secrets and forgiving him for his.

With my past weighing down on me, do I want the man who holds me together or the man who gives me permission to break?

The Wanted Bride By Sylvia McDaniel @WriterSylvia @GHBT *Review*

the wanted bride

Review:

First off this is a romantic comedy must read!  The book is centered on Valerie Burrows who is about to go postal!. Wait too late she already did!. She is running from her own wedding. The circumstances behind this fiasco are given in small doses. It all keeps the plot moving rather fast. There are just as many serious parts as comedic moments. I loved when she finds her way to Colorado. The trip, the reasons for changing buses along the way are hilarious!.

She goes to pay her check at the diner and faints. That old bitch on the bus stole her wallet and she can’t pay. Having no cash, credit cards or place to stay she looks sadly at Fran and asks for help. She gets lucky with a job and a room to rent. Then things start to happen. Reveal? me? no spoilers sorry.

What I loved was the serious parts when she meets and moves in with MacKenzie. Matt Jordan, is MacKenzie’s brother, aka the Colorado Crusher, is the most successful liability lawyer in the state. After the death of his brother-in-law, he realizes he’s ready to settle down with a family of his own. He is the BEST brother anyone could ask for. He really loves his sister and is always there to help.

I say READ it now. My chick lit fans will gobble it up. Perfect beach read.
