Swimming Upstream by Ruth Mancini

“I once read that the end of a relationship is like being involved in a road traffic accident. Which is quite fitting really, given what happened.”
Lizzie has begun to achieve all the things she thought she had ever wanted, but realises instead that she is far from happy. Then she steps out into the path of an oncoming car, and her life begins to unravel, setting off a life-changing chain of events.
Lizzie leaves her boyfriend and her home and moves to London to pursue her career. There, she attempts to overcome the legacy of her past and find out how to be happy alone. In doing so, she reconnects with two old friends, Zara and Catherine. Each friend, however, harbours a secret that is slowly revealed to Lizzie until Lizzie’s life takes another shocking twist and the friendship of all three women is threatened.
Swimming Upstream is a thoughtful but often humorous book about life and surviving its knocks. Set in the early 1990s in Cambridge and London, it is also a story of friendship, love and divided loyalties – and the moral choices that Lizzie ultimately faces, when the chips are down.
Described as “Eat, Pray, Love” meets “The Last Weekend”, Swimming Upstream is similar in style to books by Jojo Moyes (“Me Before You“), Elizabeth Gilbert (“Eat, Pray, Love“), Nick Hornby (“How to be Good“) and Blake Morrison (“The Last Weekend“)

Meet Ruth Mancini
I was born in South London and educated in Cambridge and London where I gained a bachelors degree in French and Spanish and a post-graduate diploma in Law. For several years I worked in the publishing industry before leaving my job, my relationship with my long-term partner and my home to travel and also to write the first draft of Swimming Upstream. I then put my writing career on hold for several years while I retrained as a lawyer. I have always had an interest in civil liberties and have cared strongly about injustice as well as loving books and wanting to write.
I now live in Oxfordshire with my husband and our two children. I still practice as a lawyer and juggle that with writing and raising the children. My first child was born in 2002 with a severe learning disability, which means that he is also physically disabled (the two often go hand in hand) so it’s been tough! I’ve written about this – and about friendships, relationships and surviving life’s challenges generally – on my blog page if you’d like to know more.
I am an avid reader as well as a writer and author. My favourite books are women’s fiction novels and I write in a similar style to the authors I enjoy: Elizabeth Gilbert (“Eat, Pray, Love”), Nick Hornby (“High Fidelity” and “How to Be Good”), Blake Morrison (“The Last Weekend”) and David Nicholls (“One Day”). I also loved “I Don’t know How She Does it” by Allison Pearson and “A Thousand Acres” by Jane Smiley (two very different books!). My favourite book of all time is “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
Swimming Upstream is my debut novel. It has just been released and currently has 4.5 out of 5 stars over 26 reviews on Amazon UK.
I have plans for a second novel which I hope to begin writing in the next few months. So, watch this space!

Matchplay by Dakota Madison @ShortonTimeBook @Tale_of_Reviews

match play

This was such a perfect chick lit read! The main characters Rainy Dey and her room mate Olivia were adorable. When she first arrives at the University Olivia and her brother Lucas introduce themselves and all three fall in sync. Lucas was a doll, a nerdy engineering major doll! They really grow and learn about life together. Olivia struggles with who she is and who she wants, as well as Rainy, in different ways.

So, when they are organizing boxes to go to their room, Rainy sees Evan (gggrrr growls and sneers and maybe foaming at the mouth!) and his BFF Aaron Donovan. (ok at first growls and sneering to him too) The first day of school and Lucas showing the girls around as a Junior he knows the school and the “ranking” systems.

Rainy Dey was open about her Dad and the “go have fun” attitude he had. She cared for her Mom and she is still dealing with her death. Poor thing is emotional and alone in a new world. That alone makes you love her. When she tells everyone how she was named, I felt a little tear! The relationship with Olivia grows as does Marley, Olivia’s friend from debate camp. All the characters were so well written. The idea that there is a “non frat” house called the Clubhouse and the scores they get for doing what with whom is so worthy of an added point on the angst scale. I do admit the levels of angst were pretty high at some points. There are some pretty deep messages about friendship, maturing, life and love. Overall a ride to college that  is well worth taking. This is a relatively clean book too. Ok yes there was steam but it was mild to mid level steam. I need some ideas for my cast. Evan is supposed to look like The Rock. Ill take that even if I have to growl at him.

A Happy Accident by Evan Tyler @epicevantyler

A Happy Accident

A Happy Accident is the story of naïve Bobby Carter, stage name Ricky Stallion. Bobby is the front man for the up and coming band The Dare. The Dare is an American rock band who has moved to Manchester, England in 1979. While playing at a bar, a beautiful carmel-skinned waitress named Kindle Hyrum catches Bobby’s eye. Bobby proposes marriage to Kindle claiming love at first sight and yes…he is for REAL!

Kindle is a name I can honestly say confused me every time I read it. She was quick and I liked how she answered Bobby right back. I guess her childhood, or lack of, is in response to her Mom. I would say it was a strained and very cold relationship. With no help from her Mom she grew up to be a very hard worker with a self sufficient side. She had a lot of dreams for herself, that were big, getting involved or marrying someone like Bobby was NOT one.

Bobby is very persistent when it comes to his dreams and Kindle. There are obstacles concerning her color and his band. It was a pretty strange discussion when he was asking about her background. He said African-American and it leads to some banter. Though I will say there were some comments, I didn’t get the race thing myself. I think it would have been better if we knew what her background was instead of saying “caramel skin”. There were many comments about her skin color and it may be me but I missed something.  I think the issue should be more of a non issue.A Happy Accident ends with the lead in for book 2. Overall, I enjoyed the journey. This is the first book in a three-part series. Set to the lyrical soundtrack of the 60s and 70s, A Happy Accident is a story of love and choice that transcends the ages. Click on the links below to the web page the entire thing is set up and looks phenomenal!

A HAPPY ACCIDENT

American musician Bobby Carter moved to Manchester, England with one objective—to become a major player in the post punk scene of the late Seventies. His quest for stardom steers him in the direction of Kindle Hyrum, whose feistiness is only exceeded by her raw beauty….

Another one of Glenn Langohr’s stunning memoirs–a brave, unflinching account of life in prison~ Prison Killers Book 4

The California Prison System houses a mixture of Mexican cartel members, Mexican mafia, Bloods, Crips, and thousands of other street gangs fighting for control and the author turns this story into a pulp thriller of true crime.

The author of Underdog, Glenn Langohr, takes you on a journey back into prison as he remembers a prison riot days before his release date where he left his friend on the way to Pelican Bay.

The story follows the author years later as he visits his friend in Pelican Bay during a prisoner developed hunger strike against sadistic and cruel guards who get off on their isolation and enjoy adding violence to their torture.

A spotlight on the flaws at how Pelican Bay determines gang validation and solitary confinement.

“With lazer-like precision Glenn Langohr lays bare the festering under-belly of our criminal justice system in a driving, graphic narrative that somehow finds the humanity in this most inhuman setting.” Phillip Doran, T.V. Producer and Author

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

In his latest novel, “Underdog,” Glenn Langohr takes B.J. back into the dreaded Supermax at Pelican Bay, California’s toughest prison. At first he’s just fighting to survive, hopelessly outnumbered by Mexican and black gang members, but then he goes back to try and help his friend, still inside, ferociously battling to change the penal system. And ex-con Langohr can describe the hell of life inside better than any other writer. His vivid passages on just surviving in prison describe a nightmare we’d rather not know about.

*******

After having spent 22 years as a criminal defense attorney, I heard stories like this all day and all night from the majority of my clients. Rarely in my life, have I gotten a perspective as true and accurate and emotionally charged as was derived from my reading this book. The author, with no formal education nor journalistic training, has somehow managed to convey the facts, Circumstances and raw emotion into palpable words that hit home with the reader. I highly recommend this book!

*******

I’m amazed by all I have learned from someone else’s life. I can’t get enough of these books, seriously! I will be re reading them all again soon I can guarantee that!

*******

This book is very well written, fast paced and emotional. My applause to the author for humanizing the prisoners and bringing attention the snakes in the grass that run our prison system. I will be getting all his books very soon! Thanks for a fabulous read sir and God Bless you always.

*******

`Underdog’ was well written and very informative. It also held your attention very well because it was very intriguing and written brilliantly. Glenn knows what he’s talking about from first-hand experience and it shows in his writing. There is a certain flair in the writing of a book if the writer truly experiences it. I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read more from Glenn Langohr and see what other stories he has to tell!

About The Author

Glenn Langohr has a purpose: he writes to shine a light inside our prison systems and to help others turn their lives around. Before becoming a best selling author, Glenn Langohr ran away from a broken home and entered the drug war with abandon. Business with the Mexican Mafia and Hell’s Angels became a way of life until the Criminal Justice system interrupted him. In prison he was involved in riots and spent years in the hole. From solitary confinement he started writing and hasn’t stopped since. Now, he is an usher at his church, speaks as a guest Lecturer at colleges and writes articles for newspapers. “I want to show the world and the students and leaders of tomorrow, that we are only building bigger criminals by locking up low level offenders. In prison, an addiction is bred into an affliction much harder to escape.” Help him show the world redemption is possible, buy and share his books.

Inked by an Angel by Shauna Allen‏ @ShaunaAllen101 @SPNHeather

When I saw the description “Envision Touched by an Angel meets L.A. Ink” I knew I would enjoy this book. A tattoo shop, a guy who is hotter than coals on a barbecue with the nick name Angel, sounds like heaven. Well a little bit o earth! Enter a timid, shy, and very uptight accountant named Kyle, and Jed the owner. Poor Jed, he is another hunky guy that had been treated bad by the goddess of love. Now an accountant, who is his polar opposite is the one the Michael, my Angel, thinks Jed should be with. Jed has business arrangements with the ex it is just a disaster that needs a little divine intervention.  There are so many adorable things like Michael aka Angel going to AA meetings! So freaking cute, oh wait not that AA it is Angels Anonymous!
Aside from the fear of love Jed has to deal with the fact that Kyle is not single, in fact she is engaged. She is a silver spoon in her mouth type lady and is sort of expected to marry a into a well bred family. So, that means that Angel has to go all out to pull of an amazing love story. Sounds easy right? Nah it wasn’t. I definitely enjoyed this mostly because it had that certain “cute” factor. I really enjoyed Angel and his dilemma,  the real reason why he tried so hard. Please read it and enjoy it! I want to say more, but I can’t give away the plot, you have to read it and feel the love.

I’m going to pretend I’ll never see him again.
But, I will.
And this time, I might not get away.

The saga of Keatyn continues. I admit this book made me feel a little old. Get on with what didn’t grab me is that I really wanted Abby to see her daughter. I know it is important to safety, but maybe a secret weekend or sleepover in NYC. I longed for that relationship a little. Sometimes you want to fall, and I did but three were a few too many boys in this one. I sometimes had to think to remember who was the prince and who was Dawson so I hope I am alone in that confusion.

Keatyn has no problem with being away from home, blends in, makes friends and boyfriends. She is all over the place! I wanted more stalker though. Made me wish for her to be in California again. I enjoy Hollywood stars and cant wit to see what the next book is like. I am always wanting more boy crazy girls with Prada heels!
