Then the game starts. It’s three times more exciting watching from these seats than any other game I’ve ever seen. There’s a longer than usual break during the inning change, and I hear a chant of “Besar a la chica. Beso. Beso. Beso!” What? I look up at the huge screen on the side of the stadium and it’s displaying a close-up of me and Venom, larger than life, in a cartoon heart with the word ‘Beso’ at the bottom. “Oh my God, we’re on a kiss cam?!!” I look at Venom and he smiles. “Argh! You planned this, didn’t you?” Venom shakes his head. “They zeroed in on you because you’re famous. Gaah! It’s you’re fault they’re all watching us.” Venom slides his hand around the back of my neck and leans forward a little, and it’s all I can do not to back up. “You gonna embarrass me in front of seventeen thousand people?” “Maybe,” I whisper. “Please don’t,” he whispers back. He applies gentle pressure to the back of my neck, pulling me to him. He looks down at my lips and swallows hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. We lean closer to each other and a spike of nerves makes me jittery. Then he kisses me. The crowd roars. Everything fades away as his warm lips slant over mine. I expect him to be bold and forceful but he’s gentle, almost timid as his lips press softly over mine. I groan into his mouth and he ups the intensity, but never tries to push. My heart leaps into my throat, and then it’s over. Venom pulls back. We’re still on the big screen. I look stunned, well-fucked instead of fantastically-kissed. Venom smiles at the camera and waves sheepishly. Then the camera focuses on the field. “You planned that! You freakin’ planned that.” Venom shakes his head. “It would have been a great idea, but no. I didn’t even know they had that here.” “They have that everywhere!” I whisper shout. He shrugs again. Annoying. The nice lady next to me puts her hand on my shoulder and gushes about how cute we are. When she’s finishes cooing she mumbles, “Such pretty man, you two will make such pretty babies.” I feel sick. Concentrate on the game. Go Toros. Hot Mexican guys in tight pants. Do not look at Venom. Venom puts his arm over the back of my seat and I squint at him, blasting him with my ‘not interested’ look. He smiles bigger. Could this guy be any more annoying? I ignore him. This is easy to do because the game is exciting. Much faster than American games. The lady next to us buys her whole family sodas and insists on buying us some too because we are ‘so adorable’. I suck on an ice cube and try to calm down. The warmth from Venom’s arm is burning a hole in my upper back. He smells like churros, soap, a light cologne or deodorant that smells like a combination of Hugo Boss and cut grass. Under all that he’s some chemical bomb of musky male hotness. It’s unfair. I’m immune. This isn’t a date. Dates lead to other things. Sexy things. Rock stars throwing you out like a disposable diaper, things. That would never work.

About The Inn At Summer Island
Millie Leclair is a mess, complete with a dead-end career and a flat-lining love life. So when she inherits her great aunt’s oceanfront B&B in a resort town in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, she doesn’t hesitate to pack up her car and set off on a new adventure. It’ll be fun. Of course, life seldom goes according to plan. The B&B is barely habitable for one person, let alone ready to open for business. With dwindling funds, Millie has no choice but to roll up her sleeves and tackle the repairs by herself. Yeah, so much fun. Ex-pro golfer Braxton Channing thought being a full-time single parent kept him on his toes. That was before he spotted his new neighbor teetering on her rooftop—which is only the beginning of her long list of renovations for the old house—and he added keeping her safe to his to-do list. But Millie is determined to dive headfirst into repairs regardless of the risk, and suddenly, battling with his daughter over brushing her teeth seems easier than winning an argument with Millie. She’s exasperating. And oddly delightful. And most definitely shouldn’t be let anywhere near a tall ladder. For a guy who’s sworn off romantic relationships, why does he suddenly want to be the one who gets the privilege of watching Millie conquer not just the B&B but his heart as well?Pre-Order Your Copy Today!

He pushed away from the table and headed toward the snack table. But halfway there, his new neighbor, Millie Leclair, appeared in front of him with her hands on her hips and her lips pressed together in a grim line. “Why do you hate my aunt’s legacy?” Braxton frowned. “I have nothing against Mildred’s legacy. I thought she was a lovely woman.” Her eyes narrowed. “Then why are you trying to buy up her land and block her hotel?” It’d been a hard day and all Braxton wanted was a bottle of water, to finish his work, and get home to put Alice to bed. He let out a sigh and reached around her until he could snag one of the bottles on the edge of the table. Still, he admired her tenacity. “I’m not trying to block you.” He twisted off the top and raised an eye brow. “Plus, I thought you said you wanted it to be more of a bed and breakfast.” He took a long pull from his drink, keeping his gaze on her. She blinked in rapid succession. While he’d managed to catch every word she’d said on their first meeting, he somehow missed how pretty her eyes were. They were the color of rich caramel and they simultaneously calmed and ignited something within him. “It’s… well… yeah. So you were listening.” Braxton nodded. “Of course I was listening. My job, however, is to make sure everything that happens in the neighborhood is in everyone’s best interest.” She propped her hand on her hip again, regaining her footing and igniting the passion for her project in her beautiful eyes. “And you don’t think my great-aunt’s legacy, my livelihood, is what’s best for the community?” He took another swig of his water, trying to turn is attention to anything other than the way her eyes sparked when she spoke. Or how they were causing a flurry somewhere deep in his chest. “I didn’t say that, but there are a lot of things at play here. The bylaws were written to protect our residents, our neighborhoods and our beaches.” It might be an unpopular opinion, but he happened to like rules. They protected things that needed to be protected. They kept people safe. “What exactly do you think I’ll be doing at the B-and-B? Holding midnight raves and dumping my trash on the beach?” “I wouldn’t think so, but one should never assume.” He leaned in as if sharing a secret. “By the way, if you’re planning on the rave, you should make it an early evening thing. There’s also a noise ordinance that goes into effect at eleven.” He gave her his best ‘what-do-you-do?’ look and shrugged. She rolled her eyes and the flurry in his chest upgraded to a fluster, which he immediately stomped down. He didn’t have time for that, no matter how much he admired her gusto.About the Author:

Exclusive Excerpt:
With zero sound—an impressive feat—he dropped to his three free feet, then slowly lowered her to the ground. Once she was upright and clear of him, Hadyn backed away, dragging her gear with her. Then turned to catch his shift. She’d always loved watching her parents do this, finding the process fascinating. Shifters sort of shimmered in mirage-like waves as they changed from animal to human or vice versa. Everything they were in one form absorbed into the new form, clothes and all. Magical. The black dragon before her appeared to reduce in size, the massive spikes around his head and down his back sort of folding back into his body, wings becoming arms, and scales turned to bronze, burnished skin. Finally, a man stood before her, shadowed in the unlit room of the cave, darkness already finding its way in here where sunlight couldn’t reach as easily. Everything she could make out was in shades of black, like a bad guy in an old western movie, black hair, black eyes, black combat pants and a long-sleeved, collarless shirt. Arms loose at his sides. Deceptively so, she sensed. No clan mark. All dragons sported two tattoos, which appeared at birth. The one on the back of the neck was the symbol of a dragon’s family. The one on the back of the hand, between the thumb and forefinger, was the mark of the house of their king, visible proof of allegiance and belonging to their clan. To be missing his marked him as a rogue dragon. Rogues were considered dangerous and subversive by the leaders of dragon shifters. In fact, even Chaghan and Qara were wary of others. Most who hadn’t been hunted down and killed were psychopaths, according to them. Creatures to be avoided as much as the shifters still loyal to the clans. Hadyn was looking at maybe the most legendary of all rogues. Why did her parents trust him?

The Ophelia Girls by Jane Healey @MarinerMedia @HarperCollins @healey_jane
I liked the book BUT I really feel like it needed some edits. First edit is the length-very wordy and descriptive, which some people will find is not bothersome, me on the other hand, not one of them.
The chapters in my book, which was an ARC, were not past – present So sometimes that was a little annoying. Ruth’s character when younger was enjoyable but with some edits could have been better. It was not clear what her likes/dislikes were that one summer. I dont want to spoil anything. Trying to photograph and recreate Ophelia was really weird for me in the 70’s. I couldn’t get behind that odd part.
As for the family, they were likable and very normal. Married and a stay at home mom was not what Ruth wanted deep down. Not very much angst in that aspect of the story.
’I have run from that summer, tried to forget its hazy pleasures and its tragedies, how it ended, how things fell apart. I have trusted the years to fade my memories and destroyed those photographs, never to be looked at again.’’
Ruth’s daughter Maeve, who had cancer, now recovered and I think she was the best character. Trying to navigate health and no more hovering was her thorn. When Ruth’s college friend Stuart comes to stay for the summer, Alex – Ruth’s husband seems happy to reunite and catch up.
What I liked was the slight taboo relationship between Maeve and Stuart. It was written poorly and could have been beautiful with some edits. An older man accepting of her flaws from cancer and so on.
Overall it was good. With the publisher’s price, I am not sure I would pay that much for a kindle book, which saddens me. Jane Healey, in my opinion is solid and has some beautiful descriptions.
Thank you to netgalley and publisher for providing an advanced e-copy in exchange for my review.
Jane Healey studied English Literature at Warwick University and writing in the MFA program at CUNY Brooklyn College. Her short fiction has been shortlisted for the Bristol Short Story Prize, the Costa Short Story Award and the Commonwealth Short Story Prize.
The Ophelia Girls is her second novel. Her first, The Animals at Lockwood Manor, was published in 2020 and won the HWA Debut Crown Award.
She lives in Edinburgh.
