CELEBRATE 1 year since Finding Lucas was published ENTER to win a copy

Well I need to brag about this book. I think I need to disclose that it was first a comedy,then it was pure chick lit. Jaime is my beloved main character and she was a hoot! The real star of the book is not really any one person but the idea of a “different kind of family“. The not-so-perfect couple Derek and Jaime open the book with a 5 year anniversary vacation. To be honest I felt bad for Jaime, she was in a five-year relationship with a complete and total moron! When they first started dating he was normal and outgoing and then his job, a promotion, and money went to his head. The way the author describes him is so funny. (I want a celeb who can play Derek, but who??) He has more products, cremes and clothing than a Hollywood star. She has been feeling something off, lacking in every area, and the non-existent sex life is wrecking poor daytime talk show producer Jaime. The things Derek says are so funny like “Jaime please hand me those Gucci loafers, and Jaime did you see my Armani suit?” The things Jaime thinks are also funny. BUT, yeah there is a but Jaime’s family is the real star of the book. I can not ruin it but I will say that her sister who is 18 Rachel is a typical girl, you can’t help but adore her. Her mom who is never Mom but Leah, and her live-in lover Katie are so warm, outgoing and crazy they will make you laugh out loud. Then there is her Dad, David (never called David, always Dad) who is remarried to Maureen, Mo. The four of them get along and accept each other so well and their dialogue is like wear a diaper sort of dialogue.

The supporting cast is Lucy,Hanna, Eva (the b****) co-worker and Sue who is not there log and is replaced by Andrew. So the premise is that Jaime gets a life, uses her tv show to find her long-lost love Lucas, meets and moves in with a couple Amy and Chris (that is big diaper wearing event!) When Hanna takes in Jaime, I think his lines are too funny and for sure a high light!

So I pretty much can’t say enough good things about this one. I think Rachel can be the next book! I really think characters like these should be embraced. I think the world needs and wants more Leah and Kate. I wish I could go to live with them for a while. Maybe they open a retreat where we get colonics and massages while cleansing our auras. Wishful thinking I guess. Maybe I can get my wish it doesn’t hurt to ask.

My favorite quotes:

At lunch, Derek had said, “That one is going places.” Yeah, straight to hell with my heel in her ass.

Give her a break. Jamie, did you guys have a good time in Montreal?” “Sure.” No need to mention that the best part was the shower head. I have a bad feeling that my family has a cache of sex toys hidden in their houses and would have no problem giving me a detailed demonstration.

===
“I’m staying at Hanna’s. Did you know she has a 60 inch TV? And coffee. So, I’ll be okay. I feel like I’m inside the television. Have you ever seen one?” I think I’m a little drunk. “Have you been drinking? You sound like you’ve been drinking.

===

Even though it’s free, there is no way I want anyone from high school (crusty Claire, especially) to see my name on this reunion website. So I use her name instead. I type in Claire Howard, list her job as a stripper, and explain that she’s recently gotten out of prison after a prostitution arrest. Hee hee, this is fun. I add that she has four children from different fathers and is living in a rent by the minute hotel in Crack Town.

===
It’s all sparkling clean because Hanna’s never cooked a meal in her life. The most useful tool in her kitchen is the phone.

===

Because if they are, then what’s the problem? This is their business, and they obviously enjoy it, so who are you to tell them what to do?” “But they’re porn stars.” Now it’s Andrew’s turn to shrug. “So?”

Silence. “Han, are you there?” I ask. Then I hear the laughter. “Oh, Jaim, ow, my stomach, that hurts, that’s so, ha ha, so funny. How do you get yourself in these situations? Ever since you broke up with Derek, your life has been crazy.”

“You must be so nervous.” I clutch the phone tighter in my hand. “So nervous that I’m almost sick. I’ve put so much energy into wanting him that I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed. And what if he sees me and doesn’t want me? What if he doesn’t even remember me?”

“Sure. Like he’s going to want anything to do with me after this.” “You never know. And it’s time you did something out of the ordinary, you know? Aren’t you tired of being safe all the time?” “Safe is easy.”

Book Description:

“There is a vulnerability there, hovering just below the surface. And I want to pick at it until I expose it. Then I want to kiss it.”

Two years ago, Emily Burnham, had an epiphany about the shallowness of her life.  And she made it her mission to become a different person…a better woman.  Out from under the controlling thumb of her mother, Emily is tasting the real world for the first time.  And she likes it.

Nixon Caldwell has served his time in the Marine Corps, surviving two brutal tours in Afghanistan. He is back home, surrounded by what he likes best…isolation.  It’s certainly the easiest way to avoid confrontation of the consuming guilt that is weighing him down.

When an accident brings Emily and Nix together, he soon learns he is not the master of his own fate. Struggling with his own pain, Nix tries to guard himself against Emily’s charms.  He wants her in his bed, but he doesn’t want her in his heart.

Having grabbed life by the horns, Emily wants it all.  But is she willing to accept just the small part of himself that Nix is offering?  Can she reach the part of his soul that he has deemed to be Off Limits?

This book is the follow up novel to Off Sides by Sawyer Bennett. However, Off Sides can be read as a stand-alone.

EXCERPT

“This can’t happen, Emily.”

The disbelief on her face pours through into her voice. “Why?”

Why indeed?

All of those reasons that were sparking through my brain are lost. I know I had sound logic not just ten seconds ago, but I can’t grasp it right now.

“Because…we’re not…compatible.”

She stuns me when she laughs, genuine delight showing in her eyes. “Oh, we’re compatible. Your working parts and mine were in perfect alignment just a few seconds ago.”

Damn, that is hot!

She’s clearly saying that wasn’t just a kiss. She’s saying she was imagining those multiple orgasms just the way I was. I almost lunge at her to pull her back in my arms, but I have a shocking moment of clarity.

I shake my head at her. “Our parts are definitely compatible, Em. But that’s all it would be. It would never be anything but a fuck.”

I expect those words to hurt her…to enrage her…to make her realize that Nix Caldwell is the world’s biggest asshole. I hope those words cause her to go running from my house in tears.

Instead, she says, “So?”

EXCERPT

I take in his clothing with just a quick glance but I’m fascinated by the tattoos that are peaking out just under the sleeves of his t-shirt. He has three strands of black barbed wire circling each bicep. Some of the prongs have been inked to look like they are digging into his skin, and there are realistic drops of blood dripping from each wound. It’s a terrifying piece of artwork and sinfully erotic just because of its badass look. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I pull my eyes from his tats and look at him. My face heats up as I realize he’s been watching me ogle his arms.

“Like what you see?” The remark should have been a teasing comment but his voice is hard.

I try to play it cool. “Not really. Just fascinated, that’s all.”

“If you want to see more of my tattoos, you only have to ask. I’ll be glad to strip down and show you everything.” There…now that was teasing in his voice but his eyes are still hard. It’s like he wants to tease me but has no clue how to do it. For some reason, that makes me feel sad for him.

Swimming Upstream by Ruth Mancini @RuthMancini1

Swimming Upstream by Ruth Mancini

“I once read that the end of a relationship is like being involved in a road traffic accident. Which is quite fitting really, given what happened.”
Lizzie has begun to achieve all the things she thought she had ever wanted, but realises instead that she is far from happy. Then she steps out into the path of an oncoming car, and her life begins to unravel, setting off a life-changing chain of events.
Lizzie leaves her boyfriend and her home and moves to London to pursue her career. There, she attempts to overcome the legacy of her past and find out how to be happy alone. In doing so, she reconnects with two old friends, Zara and Catherine. Each friend, however, harbours a secret that is slowly revealed to Lizzie until Lizzie’s life takes another shocking twist and the friendship of all three women is threatened.
Swimming Upstream is a thoughtful but often humorous book about life and surviving its knocks. Set in the early 1990s in Cambridge and London, it is also a story of friendship, love and divided loyalties – and the moral choices that Lizzie ultimately faces, when the chips are down.
Described as “Eat, Pray, Love” meets “The Last Weekend”, Swimming Upstream is similar in style to books by Jojo Moyes (“Me Before You“), Elizabeth Gilbert (“Eat, Pray, Love“), Nick Hornby (“How to be Good“) and Blake Morrison (“The Last Weekend“)
Ruth Mancini

Meet Ruth Mancini
I was born in South London and educated in Cambridge and London where I gained a bachelors degree in French and Spanish and a post-graduate diploma in Law. For several years I worked in the publishing industry before leaving my job, my relationship with my long-term partner and my home to travel and also to write the first draft of Swimming Upstream. I then put my writing career on hold for several years while I retrained as a lawyer. I have always had an interest in civil liberties and have cared strongly about injustice as well as loving books and wanting to write.
I now live in Oxfordshire with my husband and our two children. I still practice as a lawyer and juggle that with writing and raising the children. My first child was born in 2002 with a severe learning disability, which means that he is also physically disabled (the two often go hand in hand) so it’s been tough! I’ve written about this – and about friendships, relationships and surviving life’s challenges generally – on my blog page if you’d like to know more.
I am an avid reader as well as a writer and author. My favourite books are women’s fiction novels and I write in a similar style to the authors I enjoy: Elizabeth Gilbert (“Eat, Pray, Love”), Nick Hornby (“High Fidelity” and “How to Be Good”), Blake Morrison (“The Last Weekend”) and David Nicholls (“One Day”). I also loved “I Don’t know How She Does it” by Allison Pearson and “A Thousand Acres” by Jane Smiley (two very different books!). My favourite book of all time is “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
Swimming Upstream is my debut novel. It has just been released and currently has 4.5 out of 5 stars over 26 reviews on Amazon UK.
I have plans for a second novel which I hope to begin writing in the next few months. So, watch this space!

Matchplay by Dakota Madison @ShortonTimeBook @Tale_of_Reviews

match play

This was such a perfect chick lit read! The main characters Rainy Dey and her room mate Olivia were adorable. When she first arrives at the University Olivia and her brother Lucas introduce themselves and all three fall in sync. Lucas was a doll, a nerdy engineering major doll! They really grow and learn about life together. Olivia struggles with who she is and who she wants, as well as Rainy, in different ways.

So, when they are organizing boxes to go to their room, Rainy sees Evan (gggrrr growls and sneers and maybe foaming at the mouth!) and his BFF Aaron Donovan. (ok at first growls and sneering to him too) The first day of school and Lucas showing the girls around as a Junior he knows the school and the “ranking” systems.

Rainy Dey was open about her Dad and the “go have fun” attitude he had. She cared for her Mom and she is still dealing with her death. Poor thing is emotional and alone in a new world. That alone makes you love her. When she tells everyone how she was named, I felt a little tear! The relationship with Olivia grows as does Marley, Olivia’s friend from debate camp. All the characters were so well written. The idea that there is a “non frat” house called the Clubhouse and the scores they get for doing what with whom is so worthy of an added point on the angst scale. I do admit the levels of angst were pretty high at some points. There are some pretty deep messages about friendship, maturing, life and love. Overall a ride to college that  is well worth taking. This is a relatively clean book too. Ok yes there was steam but it was mild to mid level steam. I need some ideas for my cast. Evan is supposed to look like The Rock. Ill take that even if I have to growl at him.
