A Song for Julia (Thompson Sisters) by Charles Sheehan-Miles @CSheehanMiles

A Song for Julia

Everyone should have something to rebel against.

Crank Wilson left his South Boston home at sixteen to start a punk band and burn out his rage at the world. Six years later, he’s still at odds with his father, a Boston cop, and doesn’t ever speak to his mother. The only relationship that really matters is with his younger brother, but watching out for Sean can be a full-time job. The one thing Crank wants in life is to be left the hell alone to write his music and drive his band to success.

Julia Thompson left a secret behind in Beijing that exploded into scandal in Washington, DC, threatening her father’s career and dominating her family’s life. Now, in her senior year at Harvard, she’s haunted by a voice from her past and refuses to ever lose control of her emotions again, especially when it comes to a guy.

When Julia and Crank meet at an anti-war protest in Washington in the fall of 2002, the connection between them is so powerful it threatens to tear everything apart.

MY Review

5 big stars I really honestly and truly loved every aspect of this book. It was a a true story of love. The characters and how real they were just blows you away.

This was my first Charles Sheehan-Miles book and I bought all the others. Why have we never heard this name? If you are a fan of  On Dublin Street and the Avoiding Series, I KNOW you will love this. It is a much cleaner version. Makes you think how friendship with a teen Sean, Crank’s brother, who has  Aspberger’s syndrome. Crank is very involved and takes Sean’s care as his number one priority. There is a great cast, John the father who is a Boston cop and is a mild Archie Bunker. He makes you laugh and cry. John has a very loyal partner who is a like a fixture in the home.

They go on a journey to find their dreams and grow together. I won’t give a synopsis of the book, read the blurb and go get it. Very lovable people, life lessons, life choices, and love. This is the reason I say GO RUN and read it now.

Roll Call by Glenn Langohr @rollcallthebook

Roll Call

Before I start I will say I am an avid reader and always fall for a good crime book. I love justice system books, and books about cops, detectives and the FBI. That alone, tells you I am a fan of this genre. What I loved was the book was real. The lifestyle, the time and the people are written in a very intimate way. That being said, if someone is bad or on a path toward being bad and you can make the character appealing, you got a reader engrossed. So when the book starts you are introduced to BJ (Benny Johnson), who is very similar to the author’s own personal experiences. When you get the childhood and dysfunction you are thrown into what BJ considers his only path. The book is “based” on actual events; it is not any single persons POV or narrated. What I liked, was when BJ was talking through his process. What people won’t see is how smart he was. He tried to plan making money, then buying a house. Some aspects of his life were very thought out concerning money. This was a troubled guy that you know is being bad, doing bad and acting bad, but still I was so praying for his redemption.

Nothing is roses and fairy dust here. When BJ is put down and at his lowest he turns to what he thinks is the only way he can make money, selling and dealing drugs. Nobody he encounters other than his brother and his friend Joe are trustworthy. For BJ, he sees that his future is planned and the outcome is jail. He never had expectations he was just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

After his first round in prison he meets Natasha. She never judged him, she accepted him. If I say there was a love story there, I don’t think you would believe me. I loved BJ even more when he was with Natasha. I can’t give spoilers, but I know he was loved by her. As you are making the journey things and events will start to come together around the police. BJ starts to create his own little empire drawing in some people from the past. When things in the drug world are gaining momentum and move from pot to some hard drugs, BJ is caught between loyalty and betrayal. While in prison he truly learns the meaning of being loyal. The system that the prisoners come up with to communicate is remarkable. They are self-segregated, if that makes sense. They always have one another’s backs and these men turn out to be far more loyal in the end.

The second half of the book is where you see that he is not fearful of jail. He could be angry at all the circumstances that play into his life, but he never has a pity party. Even when the police, the detectives and his Dad are looking down at him, he was in control. The thought process was “do enough speed so I am awake for days at a time and calculate each and every deal.”  Every time he felt like he was free a Detective would show up. It was a nice sunny day let me ride the motorcycle up PH. Nope BJ turns and there is an unmarked watching him. He was under surveillance because of his past. He struggled with his new found life for a long time. Everywhere was the name Bob Prescott.

I agree that God’s plan plays a major factor in BJ’s redemption. He realizes that to get to where he is, nothing shaped him as much as making mistakes and finding forgiveness. Without that how can he overcome a detective, a crooked cop and a lawyer who needs his ass kicked? So many times I thought this could be a great movie or a series on HBO. Yes there was violence and drugs and it was pretty mild considering the subject matter.

Nothing I can write will do the author’s work justice. I can’t glamorize the Southern California lifestyle, mostly because it is where I live and daily life is excess. I carefully thought who I would cast for the roles. That will come soon.

Gated by Matt Drable @MattDrabble01

Gated

Loved this book. I am very easily scared and I like to be on edge a little. By getting to know the characters Michael and Emily really helped when their tragedy stuck. If you are not drawn in and begin to care about the characters, then the tragedy is not as awful. This was really storytelling at its best. So I am not going to reveal any spoilers, but it was pretty dramatic and you will appreciate the story so much more now that you care about this couple.

As the story progressed and Michael and Emily are moving into Eden Gardens, where they have a very warm reception. People around them greet them and they feel welcomed. This is where I was fearful and on edge! When they begin a routine in their perfect little cookie cutter village, the story seems to gain momentum. The rest of the book is set up on a very steady climb to some real drama. I mean a dead body thrown in here and there, well what is that? Nothing! At least not in Eden Gardens, it is after all a perfect community. Yeesh nail biter!

My thoughts are, if you like a thriller then this is for you! If you like a thriller that is edgy and maybe considered mild horror then, BINGO this is for you. I really thought it was entertaining and out of my comfort zone so if I rave about it then you know it was a great read. I think both men and woman will love this book.

Born in Bath, England in 1974, a self-professed “funny onion”, equal parts sport loving
jock and comic book geek. From an early age reading so many works of varied authors I took the somewhat foolhardy decision to attempt my own novels. I have currently completed three books, “Rapture Falls”, “Vengeance Has Fangs” and “Gated” all of which are available in eBook
format for download on Amazon. Perhaps one day I will be able to list my publishing achievements and literary awards, but for now I simply hope to have produced an interesting piece of work that entertains with a modicum of intelligence. I have always been an avid fan of the Horror/Supernatural genres and find that many great works in this field are automatically dismissed due to their subject matter.

Now she’s got a great apartment, a steady job, and a wonderful boyfriend in Colin; he’s sweet, stable, and essentially perfect – except maybe for the fact that his best friend is Chase.
