What happens when you uncover years of secrets and find out everything you thought to be true was a lie?

Drew Stevens finds her world turned upside down when her parents are brutally murdered. Soon after, she learns she inherited a property in Bar Harbor, Maine, from recently deceased grandparents that she believed had died when she was a baby.

Drew travels north to settle her grandparents’ estate, but finds more questions than answers as the truth starts unraveling. What she didn’t expect to find was Saint, whose reputation is as tumultuous as his past. But the very thing that brings them together is the same thing that keeps them emotionally caged.

With Saint’s scars so deep and Drew’s so fresh, can the pair heal from their painful wounds or will they be pulled beneath the darkness of their pasts?

The Good Life

Detective Kyle Anderson is a man of simple tastes and reasonably low expectations. Give him a juicy steak and no homicides, and he’d call it good. When his sister Katelyn got engaged to his best friend Dominic, he’d figured the worst of the unnecessary drama in his life was over. But that was before Dom’s free-spirited, twig-eating, exasperating sister Demetria came back to Nebraska and completely hijacked the planning of the wedding, starting with inviting Dom’s ex-wife Isabel. Now Kate’s so determined to prove Isabel is up to no good that she insists Kyle date her to keep her away from Dom. Soon Kyle is so knee deep in Anderson-Valentini dramatics, he’s thinking of changing his name and moving to Tibet. If he could just get Demi the impossibly sexy granola-flake off his mind long enough to do it…

Author’s Note: Contains both Dom and Kate short romances The Bird Day Battalion and The V-Day Aversion as well as the full length novel The Good Life. Also included in this spectacular novel:

The Bird Day Battalion

Meet Katelyn Anderson, a play by the rules, temporarily out of work archaeologist desperate to pull off the perfect Thanksgiving dinner for her family. Enter Dominic Valentini, her oldest friend and former neighbor, a take chances, take control, think outside the box kind of man. Kate needs his help. Dom just needs her.

The V-Day Aversion

It’s two days from Valentine’s Day, and Dominic is a man with a plan. Katelyn is a woman with her own plan: avoid whatever Dominic’s got planned. When Katelyn’s sister Kandace asks Kate to help catch her estranged husband cheating, Kate jumps at the opportunity because she hates Valentine’s Day. Poor Dom just wants Kate to stand still long enough to give her a Valentine’s Day to remember. Can he offer her something to change her mind?

The Good Life excerpt #2 (~750 words, sexual content):

He stood up and led her onto the dance floor to join the bride and groom. No one looked askance at them, after all, they were the maid of honor and best man; it was tradition anyway. But when he kept her in a close embrace even into the next song, Demi caught her brother’s eye. He had that protective look back on his features. She pushed Kyle away just slightly. He obliged, but only just.
Kyle’s eyes were smoky and dark like the underside of a storm cloud. He began to sing along with the song in a soft baritone, “Wise men say… only fools rush in… but I…”
“Stop,” she hissed. Her voice sounded insincere even to her own ears. It didn’t help he was doing a pretty good impression of Elvis, and her favorite song, no less.
He grinned and the laugh lines at the edge of his eyes highlighted a scar next to his eyebrow she hadn’t noticed previously.
“Where’d you get that scar?” she asked.
“Dom and I and some college buddies were white river rafting about six years ago and my tube tipped over. He actually saved my life. It’s extra ironic because at the time we still disliked each other, and were only there together because we had a mutual friend invite us both. But after that, and a bottle of Wild Turkey, we’ve been tight.”
“I didn’t realize that,” she whispered, wondering why she had never thought to ask.
“A lot’s happened while you were away,” he said. For once there was no accusation or judgment in his tone.
She looked over his shoulder again. Kate was unsubtly dragging Dom from the floor where he was glowering at Kyle and Demi’s dance. She urged him to sit down at the table with her parents, back facing towards them. Shortly thereafter, Kyle began to guide Demi towards the edge of the room, making her wonder if twins had some sort of ESP.
“Kyle…” she warned. “Someone will notice.”
“Let them.”
“Kyle…”
“I want to be with you, Demetria. Go on dates, have sex and pointless arguments, figure out why you like to eat rabbit food, be the person you call first when you’ve had a bad day, come over and hold your hair when you’re sick. How much clearer can I make this?” he asked.
They were now at the edge of the hall. He dropped his embrace and tugged her by the hand. She didn’t know why she followed. Maybe the daze brought on by his goofy list, maybe the way her heart raced at the simple sweetness of it. Maybe it was the sugar high.
Kyle tugged her into a side room and shut the door. Just like their first time, Demi was the one to draw his mouth to hers. His hands undid his belt and slacks then pushed her dress up, and yanked her hose down. He hitched her up and backed into a chair, keeping their mouths locked. He grabbed her hips as he sat and she knelt to straddle him in it.
“Ungh,” she moaned when he entered her without any more preparation than a few dozen sensuous kisses. She was just dry enough that it felt forceful, but wet enough for it to not be painful. For some reason the rough sensation was an incredible turn on. She grabbed his head and deepened her kisses while he moved her up and down on his cock. He broke the kiss and moved his mouth to her neck.
“Say yes,” he whispered.
She shivered from the tickle it made on her skin. She had forgotten what she was supposed to be answering. She gripped his head firmer and started moving faster on his lap. He grabbed her hips and stilled her, then waited until she looked in his eyes.
“Say yes,” he repeated. “Take a chance on me. On us.” His voice and expression were passionate and demanding.
Her flesh and soul felt inexorably tangled up in lust and longing, yearning not just for his body, but to discover what it would be like to be cherished by him.

Summary
There is a spy in S&D systems who is leaking top-secret information that could lead to extreme disaster. It’s up to Shane Gallagher to uncover the mole and set things right.
Systems analyst Elena Reyes had no intention of stealing company secrets until her brother’s life was threatened by the cruelest of mobsters. When Elena finally confesses her deeds to Shane, he’s ready to do everything he can to keep her out of danger. But will Shane’s help be enough to protect them, or will his good intentions leave them all for dead?

Excerpt
Elena had never thought about seducIng a man. She wasn’t even sure of her moves. But she knew that Shane wanted her, even if he wasn’t prepared to admit it. She also knew he felt protective of her, which was probably part of the conflict he must be feeling.
Before he could come up with another objection, she cupped the back of his head with her hands and brought his face down as she raised her own head toward him.
She hadn’t been sure what would happen. Or perhaps she’d been afraid that he’d wrench himself away from her. But the danger must have affected his emotions as well as her own. When their lips met, it was as though someone had tossed a match into a pile of gasoline- soaked kindling. Invisible flames rose as heat flared between them.
She heard him growl her name and felt him gather her closer as he kissed her with purpose, running his hands up and down her back.
The heat coming off him made her dizzy. She should be afraid, but she kept kissing him, letting him feel all the passion that she’d held inside herself for so long.
Opening her lips, she invited him to explore her mouth, then did the same with him, absorbing his taste and the way the mouth-to-mouth contact sent shock waves to every part of her body.
“You know that you’re playing with fire?” he asked.
“I know what I want.”
“Then take off your clothes.”
Again, a dose of reality. Was she ready to get undressed in front of him? Or was she going to back away—the way he hoped she would.
She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of scaring her off. Not because she was trying to score any points, but because what she wanted hadn’t changed, even if he was trying to make her take a step back.
She did step back, but only a few feet. She kept her gaze on him as she reached for the hem of the T-shirt and pulled it over her head, then let it drop on the floor so that she stood before him naked to the waist…

As we round out the end of the tour, Olivia asks, “So where’s the pole?”

I stop in my tracks and turn, smirking at her. “The pole?” I grin. “You want to know where the pole is?” I look down at my tented crotch. “Well…umm…I’ve—”

“Not that pole!  Geez!  The one you slide down,” she laughs.

“Still the same thing.”

We fall into a fit of laughter, and Olivia lightly slaps my arm.

I take her hand and lead her to the other side of the truck.  “It’s over here, babe.”

We round the truck and there stands the pole. “Does anyone ever really use it?” she asks, removing the hair tie that holds her ponytail. She musses up her hair with her fingers, letting it fall naturally around her shoulders.

“Eh…sometimes.  We’re usually down here hanging out or checking equipment and stuff when there’s a call so, no, not as much as you’d think.”

Olivia lets go of my hand and walks toward the pole, running her hand down the cool brass.  She glances over her shoulder, giving me a sly smile.  I smile back, cross my arms, and lean against the truck, watching her.

She wraps her hands around the pole and leans back, swinging herself around.

“What are you doing, Olivia?”

“You know, I took one of those pole dancing classes at my gym,” Olivia tells me, wrapping a leg around the pole.

I slowly shake my head, smirking “Did you now.”  She’s playing with fire.

“I did.  It was fun. Really hard actually.  I learned all kinds of interesting moves.”  She swings herself around the pole again and lets her head fall farther back so her hair flows freely behind her.

As she twirls, I casually run a hand down the front of my pants and stroke my dick.  Olivia’s eyes follow my hand and we silently watch each other. She bites her lower lip and smirks at me.  Letting one hand on the pole go, Olivia uses it to rub her breast over her top and then runs it down her belly and lower.

“Owen, is there anyone down here right now?”

I stand slowly and look around the back of the truck before returning to my spot. “Looks like they’re all in the kitchen.  It’s just us. Why?”

Olivia spins herself around the pole and flips her hair again.  She pops open a button on her blouse and starts to slide down the pole, sticking out her ass provocatively as she moves back up it.  She’s killing me and she knows it.

It’s Not My Favorite (The Lake Effect Series Book 1) by Rue @ItsNotMyFavorit #Review

The first chapter was very steamy! Then …it was a dream! OMG The Hutchinson sisters grew up the daughters of a preacher. I got the feeling that if one or both ever did find and marry “a good Christian boy” they would find something else to complain about. The conversations between them were the high point for me.  Their mother spoke in Minnesota lingo so it was a treat.
As for the main characters Gwenn (Gwendolyn) and her sister Rachel are funny. When it comes to the sister likeness they are not it! They are opposites. Each one is just trying to find out where and what they should be doing.

Gwen is an organizer and has her own business. There are a few funny scenes between them where you find out that Gwenn is a slob. I guess she tires of cleaning other peoples clutter, so when it comes to her own, well shed just rather it sit and be clutter.

Rachel is a little bit of a rebel, she gay, her parents don’t know. I don’t get her thinking, but she feels like it would be the end all battle so why tell them. In every other conversation she is told of a “nice Christian boy” that she could date. So it was laughable. They make reference to things I consider funny like mentioning God told them to move. They moved a lot too!

The plot follows as Gwenn has vivid dreams of a handsome stranger. Then Gwenn discovers a photo and she wonders if this artist Daniel Gregory is her dream guy. When the adventure begins the sisters keep a decent pace. I felt bad for Rachel when she had to deal with a possible cheating dilemma with her long time rock band girlfriend. She takes you on a text message fueled frenzy.

Overall the book was good although at times a little too descriptive and that slowed things up a little for me. The title comes from a family saying “Well, it’s not my favorite.” The sisters are in for more Minnesota adventures for sure.

Hope is a dangerous thing. I know that more than most. Everything good I’ve ever had has been stolen from me — my friends, my fiance, my innocence, some would say even my sanity. All I have left is the cage. Fighting is the only thing that eases the ache inside me even a little. It’s the only thing that keeps the bottle at bay.

I was content to ride out my life alone. I was done dreaming that things could be better. But then I met Grace, and suddenly, all I could do was dream.

She’s battling those same demons, only she’s losing. I don’t want to care, but something about her calls to me. That pain in her eyes is so sharp, so familiar. I know it’s only a matter of time before it pulls her below the surface.

I can help her, and maybe, just maybe, she can help me too. For the first time in what feels like forever, I’ve got hope, and that scares the hell out of me.

This is a full length novel with no cliffhanger. There will be a sequel, but this book resolves all the story elements by the end. It is written with dual perspectives, so both Logan and Grace get their say.

excerpt Image5

Grace POV

There were fresh tears rising behind my eyes now, and this time they weren’t for me. I felt like the world’s biggest bitch. “I…I’m sorry, Logan. I’m sorry.”

He nodded, seemingly not trusting himself to speak. I couldn’t blame him. That scene was more horrific than anything I’d experienced in my life. I was struck by an immense sense of shame. How much death had Logan seen? How many friends had been ripped away from him before his eyes? It didn’t bear thinking about. And here I was crying over one lost life. I probably looked so childish. If Logan could find a way to overcome his pain, then so could I.

“How do you stop it destroying you?” I asked.

“By acknowledging you don’t control the world. We all makes choices. Some of them are good, others are a fucking disaster, but very few things are the result of a single action. What if our CO had sent us to another village that day? Or the insurgent leader was slow with his dinner and the attack came five minutes later? What if Ace never enlisted at all? There are a million variables to everything. Blame isn’t black and white. I know I contributed to his death in some small way, but I also know I’m not responsible. You need to realise that too.” He stepped closer and reached out to brush my face where a single tear had leaked down. “There’s a girl in here somewhere who deserves a second chance, and you owe it to her to make that happen.”

The tenderness in his voice filled me with warmth. I stared up at him, everything inside me in tatters. I hurt for me and for him, for Tom and for Ace. There was so much pain, and right then it felt like we were both ready to drown in it. I desperately wanted something to cut through all that, if only for a moment.

There was barely a foot between our faces now, and slowly but surely, that space was shrinking further still. His hand lingered on my cheek, his eyes locked to mine. I could feel the heat of him enveloping my skin like steam, his scent swelling in my nostrils. There was something stirring in my stomach, something hungry and desperate and lonely. I knew I needed to look away, to break the spell of that moment, but his sheer presence held me in a trance.

He stood poised over me for what felt like a lifetime, gaze hungry, breath trembling, fingers dancing tiny circles across my skin, then with a low growl he pulled back.

Maya Cross is a writer who enjoys making people blush. Growing up with a mother who worked in a book store, she read a lot from a very young age, and soon enough picked up a pen of her own. She’s tried her hands at a whole variety of genres including horror, science fiction, and fantasy, but funnily enough, it was the sexy stuff that stuck. She has now started this pen name as an outlet for her spicier thoughts (they were starting to overflow). She likes her heroes strong but mysterious, her encounters sizzling, and her characters true to life.

She believes in writing familiar narratives told with a twist, so most of her stories will feel comfortable, but hopefully a little unique. Whatever genre she’s writing, finding a fascinating concept is the first, and most important step.
