Title: My Only Defense

Author: Leigh Lennon

Genre: MM Romance

About My Only Defense:

Garrison Love sucks! There I said it. I’ve never looked for it, nor do I want it. All it seems to do is cause open wounds. I already suffer from the guilt of a horrific accident. I won’t let love suck me down the rabbit hole. But Murphy’s Law is a diva out to destroy my life. Someone sees me for more than just a one and done and though I’ve pushed men away for years, he’s refreshing. But remember that diva I told you about, she’s sort of a b**** too. Yeah, love more than sucks but since I can’t use the words I want, I’ll just stick to that because the man I want has a connection with me, no one knows about.   Lawson I met a man. Sure he’s a little detached and cynical. Though, try telling my heart he’s all wrong for me. I’ve been over it with this particular traitorous part of my body. And, I do the one thing I never do with my hook-ups. I give him a way to reach me. But it’s more—I almost beg him to call me after my next deployment. Oh, yeah, forgot to mention, I’m in the military and am shipping out. I want him to be my welcoming party, when I come home, yet, when I unravel every complicated part of Garrison Fisher, I find more and more I should run from. But I can’t. He’s broken, but after my time in the military, I’m broken too. Can we fix one another and heal the wounds that may very well tear us apart?

His hideout is destroyed, his few allies are scattered and hiding, and the Alliance has placed a dead-or-alive bounty on his head, making him the most wanted dragon in the western hemisphere. And then the most enticing woman he’s ever met barges into his mountain, demanding an audience. Hadyn Reece’s future was ripped away long ago. The man fated to be her mate was murdered alongside her parents before Hadyn was old enough to be turned, leaving her to be raised and trained by her dead mate’s parents in the dragon shifter world. Now, the Alliance has come for the only family she has left. It’s a good thing she was raised by dragons, because the only one who can help her save them is a traitor she’d be smart to fear. Exclusive Excerpt:

With zero sound—an impressive feat—he dropped to his three free feet, then slowly lowered her to the ground. Once she was upright and clear of him, Hadyn backed away, dragging her gear with her. Then turned to catch his shift. She’d always loved watching her parents do this, finding the process fascinating. Shifters sort of shimmered in mirage-like waves as they changed from animal to human or vice versa. Everything they were in one form absorbed into the new form, clothes and all. Magical. The black dragon before her appeared to reduce in size, the massive spikes around his head and down his back sort of folding back into his body, wings becoming arms, and scales turned to bronze, burnished skin. Finally, a man stood before her, shadowed in the unlit room of the cave, darkness already finding its way in here where sunlight couldn’t reach as easily. Everything she could make out was in shades of black, like a bad guy in an old western movie, black hair, black eyes, black combat pants and a long-sleeved, collarless shirt. Arms loose at his sides. Deceptively so, she sensed. No clan mark. All dragons sported two tattoos, which appeared at birth. The one on the back of the neck was the symbol of a dragon’s family. The one on the back of the hand, between the thumb and forefinger, was the mark of the house of their king, visible proof of allegiance and belonging to their clan. To be missing his marked him as a rogue dragon. Rogues were considered dangerous and subversive by the leaders of dragon shifters. In fact, even Chaghan and Qara were wary of others. Most who hadn’t been hunted down and killed were psychopaths, according to them. Creatures to be avoided as much as the shifters still loyal to the clans. Hadyn was looking at maybe the most legendary of all rogues. Why did her parents trust him?

The Ophelia Girls by Jane Healey @MarinerMedia @HarperCollins @healey_jane

I liked the book BUT I really feel like it needed some edits. First edit is the length-very wordy and descriptive, which some people will find is not bothersome, me on the other hand, not one of them.

The chapters in my book, which was an ARC, were not past – present So sometimes that was a little annoying. Ruth’s character when younger was enjoyable but with some edits could have been better. It was not clear what her likes/dislikes were that one summer. I dont want to spoil anything. Trying to photograph and recreate Ophelia was really weird for me in the 70’s. I couldn’t get behind that odd part.

As for the family, they were likable and very normal. Married and a stay at home mom was not what Ruth wanted deep down. Not very much angst in that aspect of the story.

’I have run from that summer, tried to forget its hazy pleasures and its tragedies, how it ended, how things fell apart. I have trusted the years to fade my memories and destroyed those photographs, never to be looked at again.’’

Ruth’s daughter Maeve, who had cancer, now recovered and I think she was the best character. Trying to navigate health and no more hovering was her thorn. When Ruth’s college friend Stuart comes to stay for the summer, Alex – Ruth’s husband seems happy to reunite and catch up.

What I liked was the slight taboo relationship between Maeve and Stuart. It was written poorly and could have been beautiful with some edits. An older man accepting of her flaws from cancer and so on.

Overall it was good. With the publisher’s price, I am not sure I would pay that much for a kindle book, which saddens me. Jane Healey, in my opinion is solid and has some beautiful descriptions.

Thank you to netgalley and publisher for providing an advanced e-copy in exchange for my review.

“What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?”

When Ryder DeLuca posed that question to me at my cousin’s wedding reception, the last thing I expected was to end up in his bed.

I was the kind of woman who lived inside the lines—until I broke the rules for a smooth-talking, creative Casanova.

I really shouldn’t have been surprised when I woke up alone in his hotel room.

Three years later, our worlds collided once more, and this time, I wasn’t only caught off guard by Ryder’s sexy, dimpled smirk, but also by the little boy standing at his side.

A little boy he never mentioned, who looked just like him and was old enough to be one of my kindergarten students.

The minute Ryder extended his hand to introduce himself, it was clear I had simply been another notch on his bedpost.

Anyone in my shoes would have assumed the same thing I did—that Ryder DeLuca was nothing more than a womanizing jerk.

Then again, you know what they say about assuming, don’t you?

Both of us were marred by a past we couldn’t change, but with a little help from fate, two geriatric cupids, and a dog named Turtle, we just might get our second chance.

Creative Casanova is a one-night stand/sudden guardian/second chance romance inspired by Playboy Pilot.

COCKY HERO CLUB

Love & Other Trouble By Jackie Walker

I’ve always been textbook people pleaser with third-degree middle child syndrome.Putting everyone else first with a smile on my face was working out pretty well for me when out of nowhere, Archer Bliss — a growly single dad — drops a bomb on my carefully constructed happy life.It seems my boyfriend has been cheating on me with Archer’s girlfriend. Even worse? She’s my coworker and secret archnemesis.
The old me would have forgiven them and wished them the best.
But the new me has had enough.
So, I do the (ir)rational thing and dump my lunch all over the backstabbing cheaters. Then I plant a kiss right on Archer’s very kissable lips right in front of both of them.
That’s right — I started a war by serving up a dish called revenge, which is best served with lips and lo mein.
And now, I’ve somehow teamed up with this hunky beast of a man to get even with our cheating exes.
At least it started that way, but now it’s an excuse to spend time together… some of which is horizontal.
The catch? He’s got three kids who need him, and I’m still trying to figure out who I am. Starting a romance with each of us fresh out of a messy breakup is only asking for trouble.
But the new me likes trouble. And Archer Bliss is trouble with a capital T.

One day during the COVID quarantine (a.k.a. the dark time), Jackie was reading yet another laugh a minute rom-com by Lucy Score or Pippa Grant, and she thought to herself – hey, I can do that. And so, she did and it turned out even better than even she thought possible.
Jackie is a fresh face on the romance author scene destined to shake things up with her signature blend of light-hearted comedy, over the top characters and romantic heartwarming moments. A voracious romance reader herself, Jackie writes stories featuring the four S’s: Snark, Swoons, Steam and Sarcasm. Her heroines are bad-ass and her heroes are easy on the eyes and heavy on the charm.
When she is not writing funny stories about swoony heroes and the women who get to play with them, she is reading all types of romance novels or taking care of her army of cats and her teenage son (who also speaks fluent sarcasm).

EXCERPT

Everything in the room is white. The couch. The rug. The walls. Even the television has a white border around it. The mantel over the fireplace—white. Same with the picture frames. Everywhere I look, it’s all I see. The living room is supposed to be inviting, welcoming, and yet it feels stressful. I’ve never been the type of person who asks their friends to take off their shoes when they come into their home. I find it rude, but I also respect it if my friends ask me. When you come into my house—well, my soon to be former home—your shoes must be off. Not only off but left outside.

I sit on the couch, with its white pillows, and rest my ankle on my knee. My shoes are on because I’m bitter and angry at the world, the situation I’m in, and my wife. Mostly her, which probably isn’t fair, but her actions have put us in this position.
Elena comes into the room and sighs heavily. I know why and I don’t care. I continue to stare out the window at the blue sky. Elena and I met in college. I was on a full scholarship at the University of Alabama, playing wide receiver, and she worked for my favorite clothing store. I wish I could say it was love at first sight, but it was fear that brought us together. I had been in her store when a tornado warning sounded. Everyone in the store took shelter, except Elena. She stood in the middle of the room with nothing but sheer panic on her face. Her co-workers tried to coax her into the back room, but she was frozen. I went to her, scooped her up, and carried her to the back. She clung to me until the warning was over. The entire time I just talked to her about my life, football, my hopes, and dreams. She told me she moved to Alabama to go to school, but her financial aid fell through, and she was too embarrassed to go home and ask her parents for money. They didn’t want her moving south to begin with, and told her she was making a mistake. She needed to prove them wrong.

After that day, we started hanging out. She’d come to the dorm, help me with my homework, and I’d invite her to games. Our friendship turned romantic a few months later, and after a couple of years of dating, I asked her to marry me. I thought I had found my soulmate. It turns out I was just her meal ticket to stardom.
It’s funny when you’re in a life and death situation. You say a lot of things to the people around you. For me, I’ve always dreamed of playing professional football. I worked my ass off in college to achieve my dream. Elena’s dream was to work in marketing or advertising. That was until we started dating seriously, and her social media skyrocketed. Then, her dream was to become an influencer and eventually a model. I supported each change in her career wholeheartedly because I wanted her to be happy, and I was in love with her. I thought she was in love with me. She told me we had to have a house in Orange County even though we lived in Portland, Oregon. At first, I didn’t understand why but still gave her what she wanted. Everything became clear when some reality TV show about wives announced she was joining the cast. The show was a hit. Her fame grew. And suddenly, she wanted to be an actress. By now, through all of this, we have two children and are splitting our time between Portland, Huntington Beach, her parents in Delaware, and mine in Michigan. An endless cycle of traveling. I tried to talk to her about it. I tried telling her something had to give. At first, she was defensive, telling me I was trying to stifle her creativity. Then she said if I really loved her and the kids, I’d ask for a trade to one of the teams in California. When I told her no, she uttered the word I never thought I’d hear—divorce.
My world was rocked.
