I made the only decision I could.

And I have no regrets–even if Lars Trouble can’t handle that.

Now I just have to convince my broken heart it’s better off without him.

***

I don’t do secrets, I hate deceivers and I’m not in love with my best friend.

Or so I thought.

As the man in the shadows, the drummer of the Darling Devils, the person I rely on most is my best friend.

That is until I discover Naomi is a liar.

If walking away from her was hard, learning she isn’t mine to love feels impossible.

And just when I think it’s all finally coming back together, fate steps in and proves me wrong.

But when you love someone, you do the only thing you can. You fight for your love story to begin.

A friends-to-lovers romance to the beat of the Darling Devils – the legends of music.

Lars and I were kissing, and it was delicious.

As delicious as a spoonful of Nutella. You know you shouldn’t indulge, but at the end of the day, you can’t resist. And why would you?

He detached his lips from mine, dove back in, kissed me some more.

It was hot.

Nutella with sparkles.

But then he stopped, looked at me with fire in his eyes and dropped the bomb that would define our relationship.

“That’s why I love your kind of girls so much.”

It wasn’t a cold shower. It was an Arctic Tsunami.

I was just another preconceived notion, and this manslut of a rock star might have had an Asian fetish. (…)

Asian wasn’t a type.

It was the continent I came from. It was an ocean of misconception.

It was a melting pot of cultural mishaps of western minds.

And being Japanese, I hated men thinking I could become a Geisha once in their bed.

I liked sex. I liked men but not because I was born in Japan, not because I could become a mistress, and not because porn had made “Asian girls” the ultimate tight pussy to fuck.

I liked sex because I was me.

So, coming out of the bathroom, I rejected Lars.

(…)

Unfortunately, I had to talk to him later that night, and when he thought I came for more, I burst his bubble.

He had never heard of an Asian fetish and was convinced it wasn’t a thing.

I told him to check it out.

I explained why I didn’t have sex or date men who fell in this category.

He listened.

He learned.

And we ended up talking all night, and then some more on the phone the next day and around coffee after that.

We talked about who we were, who I was, where I came from, what he liked, how he became a rock star, how it changed his life.

We were spilling all of our secrets.

Or almost all of them.

We learned everything and anything there was to know about one another.

We spent nights together, talking for hours, falling asleep next to each other.

We were together for most of our free time, even if we barely had any.

We were always attached at the hip whenever we could be, wherever we would go.

It all started with a hot kiss, but Lars Trouble had become my most beautiful story.

He had become my best friend.

About PROVOKE:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Seaside Pictures series…

The music industry called me a savant at age sixteen when I uploaded my first video and gained instant fame. And then Drew Amherst of Adrenaline became my mentor, and my career took off.

Everything was great.

Until tragedy struck, and I wondered if I’d ever be able to perform again. I fought back, but all it took was a falling light to bring it all back to the fore. So, I walked away. Because I knew it wasn’t just stage fright. It was so much more.

The only problem?

Drew and the guys are counting on me. If I can’t combat the crippling anxiety threatening to kill me, I might lose more than I ever dreamed of.

Enter Piper Rayne, life coach, with her bullshit about empowerment, rainbows, and butterflies. She smiles all the damn time, and I’m ninety-nine percent sure there’s not a problem she can’t solve.

Until me.

She was given twenty-one days to fix me. To make me see what’s important. What’s real. The problem is, all I can see now is her. The sexy woman who pushes me. Provokes me.

Only time will tell if she’s able to do her job—and I can make her mine.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Excerpt:

“Braden!” Mom yelled for me.

I made a face at my computer. “I’m going to be dead if she heard me. Also, hi, Mom. I assume you’re watching my live feed. Hey, we’re out of Pringles so—”

She stormed into my room, swatted me on the head with an empty can of Pringles, then barreled back out.

“Love you, Ma!” I called over my shoulder.

“Love you too!” she yelled.

I put my hand on my heart. “All right, let’s do this.”

I had been singing the shit out of my newest song. Within a day of its first airing, it had garnered over two million views. Actually small by comparison to my biggest hit, which had over forty million.

My channel was doing so well that my mom was able to stay home with my little sisters, which just made me feel like the man of the house—I was somehow contributing since my loser dad stopped sending child support eons ago.

I closed up for the night and headed downstairs just as the doorbell rang.

“Braden, can you get that?” Mom said from the kitchen. “I’m elbow-deep in chicken.”

“Ew, Mom, take your fetishes elsewhere.”

A curse and then, “Braden, I swear I’m going to put naked chickens in your bed if you say something about that on your channel.”

I paused for effect and then said. “I’ll think about it.”

“Braden!”

I busted out laughing as the doorbell rang again. “Hold your ass, man.”

I jerked open the door and nearly died when Drew Amhurst, Adrenaline’s front man and all-around A-list rock star stood there, sunglasses low on his nose, and both hands on his ass, smirking. “Like this, bro? Or am I doing it wrong?”

I grinned. “Did we just become best friends?”

“I’d shake your hand but you told me to hold my ass.”

“Brothers don’t shake hands.” It totally slipped from my mouth. Before I knew what was happening, Drew charged me, pulled me in for a tight hug, kissed both my cheeks like we were Italian or something, and then set me down.

“Brothers hug.”

It hurts
to look at you.
One,
two, three, four, five . . . the lyrics to the hell inside your OCD head.
Not alive,
not dead. In chains.
You’re
broken, Amy. I did this. Can’t undo that.
Six
years ago, I played a cruel joke on you in front of the whole school. The girl
who made a happiness machine to put her happy inside my head. And I just ripped
your heart out.
Now, I’m
back to fix what I broke. I’m a psychologist, Amy. I can give you back the
happiness I stole . . .
It’s all
a lie.
I’m not a
doctor.
So what.
She doesn’t get a choice.
So what if
I buy the Victorian estate she lives in, blackmail her into fake therapy
sessions.
So what if
I get her addicted to my body like a painkiller, make her wish me dead.
I’m not the
hero. I’m the monster. The orphan boy gone bad. Cursed, everything broken.
So what,
when I discover a dark secret that makes her every inch off-limits, I don’t
keep my hands off her.
Her
bones are made from emeralds, she’s that precious.
I won’t
stop chasing her until she’s mine.
But Amy is
a pretty little liar, too. Her lie is the deadliest of them all.
Only one of
us is telling the truth.
So bloody
what. Nobody’s gonna believe her over me.
It’s her
word . . .
     . . . against MINE.
You’re
in a bad place, Amy. Where the monsters go. But it’s only in the bad places . .
. I can get to you.

Excerpt
I look at her. It’s
better than I expected. I thought it would be good, but the way Amy falls apart
is maybe the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. It starts in her shoulders,
where she seems to go weak, and at last, when her hand closes over the kid’s,
when she takes the flowers, the weakness goes to her eyes.
Oh, all her tricks
are gone now. She’s afraid and real and sad and crying into a pile of flowers
that are already dying.
Amy looks at Max, and then at me. She can’t decide what to say or do. That kind of feeling makes
me want to destroy things. But Amy doesn’t want to destroy anything. She wants
to save Max, protect him from the big bad monster. That is what tears at her.
Amy’s wondering where the danger is and I smell fear rolling off her in waves —
such intense fear that she will do or say the wrong thing. She can’t guess what
I’m up to. She’s wondering if I plan to give her a demonstration of what kind
of monster I really could be. Remind her I have a fuck for a heart.
The flowers fall out
of Amy’s delicate hands and onto the floor. She says to the kid, ‘Thank you,
Max. You mind if you leave me and Shepherd alone? We’ve got some important
adult matters to discuss. Boring stuff. Why don’t you go back to your mum? I’m
sure she’s missing you.’
‘Okay, Mamy.’ Max
trots out of Amy’s room, saying, ‘Smell you laters,’ with a
skip in his step.
‘You wouldn’t use a
kid? Surely?’ Amy whispers, her words hot as lava.
‘Yeah I would.’
‘Please don’t drag
Max into this.’
And for the first
time, she looks at me. Looks into my eyes with pure hatred. It’s what I wanted,
and now I can’t remember why I wanted it so bad.
‘You downright
refuse my help with your OCD, Amy. Don’t you get it? This shit is ruining your
life.’
Her pale lips
quiver. ‘Why can’t you leave me alone? Why is it so hard for you to just let me
be?’
‘I’m not leaving you
alone again.’
The response is
automatic. Easy. Because god fucking forbid she withers and dies.
Can you save
someone who’s already dying?
‘You don’t think I
see?’ I say. ‘You’re a zombie, Amy. Still fucking beautiful, but half alive. You’ve
given me no choice. If you don’t let me inside that pretty little head of
yours, I’ll kick Max and his mum out onto the streets.’
Sometimes the stars
don’t align so you have to make them. That’s what I’m doing with Amy. I’m
playing God. Fuck Fate. Fuck us destined for a never. I’m
making it happen.
Her mouth smacks
open. I can see into the dark reaches of her. ‘You can’t.’
‘Yeah I can. Daisy,
right? She’s poor. Comes from some derelict housing estate on the east side. I
hear it’s bad for her at home. Her uncle or something . . . They can’t afford
to pay for treatment — you know that? They’re behind on their payments. I’ve
been letting her stay scot-free.’
‘I didn’t know you
were doing that for Daisy . . . ’ Her voice is quiet like a mouse.
‘You don’t know a
lot about me.’
I can’t help the
pride that creeps in my voice. All that destruction, all that chaos I’m making
for her. It’s like a lion lying a bird at her feet.
I always get what I
want. The lies give me that power. That’s what got me addicted to them.
‘So, what’s it gonna
be? Start therapy with me? Or you wanna go downstairs and help Daisy pack her
bags?’
I’m a snake in a
suit with dead eyes and a poison tongue, and Amy gives me a death stare. Her
face is glazed for a split-second, like a China doll. Then she frowns. Her lips
purse together. Her eyes are unblinking.
‘My friends are the
one real thing in my life and you’re wrecking it,’ she says.
Wrecking things
is what I do best.
In this moment, if
her eyes were a weapon, the piercing look in them could cause serious
annihilation. It’s like she’s a lioness and I just went into her territory,
poked her, and she’s ready to attack.
‘This is emotional
blackmail. You’re using my friend and little Max to get what you want. I never
thought you could sink this low.’
It just about kills
me laughing the way she looks at me. Pure fucking contempt on a cracker. If
looks could kill, Amy would be more deadly than me. Her hate — that’s good all
by itself, makes me run hot.
I lean closer,
breathe her in. All vanilla and flower and bubble-gum. I give her a reassuring
smile. Such a narrow margin between reassuring and predatory.
‘That’s what you
want, isn’t it?’ she says. ‘You want me to hate you, because you think hate is
stronger than love,’ she says right in my face.
‘Baby, they’re not
opposites.’ I smile wickedly. ‘I think hate and lust are very close.’
It makes her eyes
hot with hate. She’s not afraid of what I’ll do or say next. She’s thinking
about killing me, maybe.
‘No, they are not
opposites, but you’re wrong. Hate isn’t stronger,’ she snarls, spit in the
corners of her mouth, and I don’t want her to stop. I want her to hate me a
whole lot harder if that’s what this is.
Got your
attention, now.
‘You want me to hate
you, but hate is weak. Don’t you understand? I feel nothing. I don’t even hate
you, anymore.’
‘You will,’ I say.
‘Soon enough, you’ll want me dead.’
But it blows my mind
that she doesn’t already.
I straighten the
gold seahorse around her neck. ‘Start making an effort to heal — or Daisy and
her little kid get booted out. Hell, I’ll raise the prices so high nobody will
be able to afford living here. Even those stuck-up rich girls. The roof over
their heads rests on your shoulders. Sink or swim — your choice, Amy.’
I’m pulling her
apart like candy floss. I’ve ruined her. I’ve burned down her dreams, hopes.
Turned her wishes to ashes. And I’ll keep ruining her, keep destroying her.
Maybe a deep part of me wants her to stop me.
‘Fine,’ she mutters.
 She doesn’t
hesitate. Doesn’t even calculate. That’s how bad she wants to save Daisy and
Max from the big evil monster.
‘Just like that? No
fight?’
‘I can’t cut off my
heart. I’m not you.’ She looks down at her bare dainty feet. ‘I just want
peace.’
Something you
could kill your way to . . . that’s how I see peace, Amy.
Whole lot of silence
after that.
Finally she says,
‘You’re vile.’
‘Tell me something I
don’t already know.’
Her eyes are jewel
green, hazed in mist. ‘I thought you were beautiful when I first saw you at the
children’s home.’
She never flatters
me, not since I hurt her. And a slow, sickening feeling comes on me.
‘Is that so?’
‘When I was
fourteen, I used to love you.’ She says it all in a cold, steady voice, and it
stabs like sharp icicles in my heart.
I pin her against
the wall behind her, and snarl, ‘Used to love me?’
The air around us is
heavy, rage brews in my gut.
‘Yes. Imagine that.
Little fourteen-year-old me — in love and thinking about you.’
It’s the closest
she’s come to showing me any real feelings. But she uses it in
the past fucking tense.
‘What do you think
that does to me, Amy, hearing you used to love me?’
‘What do you think
it does to my heart?’
The problem is, that
as good as it feels, as much as I want to lean back and get off on her
submission, I can’t. Because she looks at me from under her eyelashes. Looks at
me with my damned soul in her eyes. She never looks at me when I — no, I never
let her look at me when I go over the edge of ecstasy. And now she won’t stop
looking at me. It knocks me for six.
I clench my teeth,
damp down the anger. Pride — that’s my cardinal vice. Not wrath. Pride. The one
sin from which all others stem. Yeah, I can be the greedy man and the mean man,
the envious and the enraged man, the licentious and the vicious man, but it all
spirals down to pride. To the mortal sin of playing God. Of being a complete
arse to the only girl I fucking love.
I keep my face
neutral and fix my raw eyes at the butchered flowers on the floor.
The ache fades and
the pleasure comes back so intense I want to eat her alive. For the first time
I have to give chase, like a wolf after prey. I take her to her bed, and her
tears are hot and delicious in my mouth.
This ‘thing’ between
us, the chemistry, it’s fucking toxic. I know my body is some kind of
painkiller, a poisonous addiction, a fix she needs when it
hurts too bad. It’s like a knife to my chest but I’ll let her use me. Take
whatever I can get. Give whatever she needs. I’ll feed her addiction.
I make her hurt,
knowing I’m the one she needs to make the pain go away.
When I’m inside her,
she’s crying so hard, her sobbing clutches at me so tightly, it feels like a
supernova when I come.
I live my life in
the Artic. Like a vampire, there’s no place for sunshine in my world.
Sunshine is a
fucking killer to dead souls like me. All the same, I’m like a wasp to the
biggest flame.
I don’t care if Amy
hates me, forever. All I want is for her eyes to stay alive when I’m there. If
she loved me again, would the darkness in my soul be converted? Or would the
scar her soul has left in me, fade?

“How did you know about me wanting to make partner?” Wren asked as they climbed the porch steps of her family’s beach house.

Smith laughed. “You’re not the only Donovan sister to eat at my restaurant. Raven keeps me up to date on you, too.”

“I’m surprised she mentions me.”

“Only when I ask. I like hearing about what you’re up to.”

Wren’s head tilted. “Really? After all this time?”

He met her gaze. “Always.”

After blooming into a slow smile, she said. “That’s nice.”

“It’s the truth. You stopped coming to the island but I didn’t stop caring about you. We were good friends…once.” Smith reached for one of her hands.

She nodded. “We were. Friends.” Wren looked like she might say something else, but then looked down at their entwined fingers. “I didn’t know what to expect when I went to the restaurant tonight.” She lifted her lashes to gaze at him again. “But somehow I knew you’d make everything okay.” His heart thrummed. “I’m glad. I’d do anything to put a smile on your face.”

Her lids tightened just slightly as she peered at him as if with new eyes. “You’re the same but different. In a good way. Is that weird to say?”

He grinned as he shook his head. “No. So are you.”

Wren looked surprised. “How so?”

Drawing closer, his voice softened. “I always knew you were smart and would be a huge success. And you were always the prettiest girl on the island in summer. But now, damn woman, you’re more beautiful than I ever imagined.”

Wren’s cheeks flushed pink and her gaze turned down to the floorboards. “You’re just saying that.”

Gently, Smith cupped her jaw and bored into her dazzling green eyes. “I never say anything I don’t mean.”

She nodded, her pupils dilating. “Oh-kay.”

“The fact that you don’t know how gorgeous you are tells me you’ve never been with a man who truly appreciates you. And that’s a damn shame.” Smith’s fingers slid to the back of her neck and threaded through her hair. “A smart man would understand your value and worship you. Have you ever been

worshiped, Wren?”

Wren swallowed hard. “No.”

“Would you like to know how it feels?”

“Yes,” she whispered.

Without another word his mouth closed on hers. He kissed her softly at first, savoring the exquisite taste and feel of her flesh. His tongue darted across her lower lip, then dipped into her mouth. A tiny whimper escaped her throat and she answered by stroking his tongue with hers. Turning her head slightly, she opened her mouth to grant him better access. Accepting her invitation, he plunged deeper, nibbling on her bottom lip then sucking it into his mouth. Wren’s knees wobbled. She wrapped her arms around his firm torso, pulling herself against him. Fierce need swelled in him, sending heat straight to his groin as a low growl rumbled in his chest. They kissed for what seemed like hours, discovering each other as raindrops spattered the porch roof. Finally, breathless and filled with so much want he could scream,

Smith pulled away.

“Wow,” she said as her chest heaved.

“Yeah. Wow.”

Trailer
Excerpt
Oh God, was that monster his cock or did he just stick a bloody cucumber down his trousers?
Furiously scrubbing her hair with the towel, Elizabeth felt her cheeks burning at the memory of the appendage straining against Hugh’s trousers.
Oh fuck, he’s huge … Did I do that to him?
The thought came out of nowhere and sent a pulse of heat straight down to her clit. Shocked, she immediately tried to brush it aside, but then couldn’t help remembering the way he’d been watching her, the hot predatory gleam in his eyes as he’d looked her over.
She knew that look. It was a hot look, dark and hungry. Sultry and very, very dangerous in the eyes of a young stud.
She’d seen it a lot when she was younger. On Saturday nights out when she went out to hit the town with her girlfriends. The clubs and bars would be thronged with packs of men who’d watch them with that same look. Like packs of wild dogs, eyeing up a fresh juicy bit of meat. Some of Patrick’s mates had given her that same look over the years too, when they’d had a few too many and were likely to get handsy…
But to see Hugh giving her that same look. No, it couldn’t be.
She’d known him and his mother for years, since he and Victor were kids in playschool. He was young enough to be her son. He was her friend’s son, and her own son’s best friend. And she was too old for him, much too old.
I’m old enough to be his mother.
“Tea’s up!”
Her heart leapt at the husky voice.
Aimlessly scrubbing her hair, she swung around to find Hugh standing in the doorway, holding two steaming mugs. The vision was as breath-taking as it had been when he had been standing in the doorway. The image of him, in those casual distressed jeans and tight shirt, radiating such raw masculinity, an alpha male at ease in his territory, made her long to be twenty years younger.
He placed them on the coffee table.
“Still lots of milk and three sugars, right?”
Placing the towel over the headrest of one of the two matching armchairs that encircled one side of the table, she sat in one corner of the sofa that sat opposite. Able to practically feel the heat of his eyes on her skin through her clothes, she picked up the mug and sipped. Sweet and just that little bit shy of hot. Perfect.
“Cheers.”
Elizabeth sipped and sipped, until she knew she couldn’t avoid talking to Hugh any longer without seeming rude. Then she mentally kicked herself. She was being ridiculous.
This was Hugh, just Hugh. It didn’t matter that he had grown into a smouldering and sexy-as-hell Adonis. It was still Hugh. She focused on that, trying to think of the little boy she’d use to watch play in the park.
“So, Jen and Mike took off to the sun and gave you run of the house, huh? Where’d they go?”
“Gran Canaria,” he answered, sitting beside her. As it was a two-seater, there was just enough room on the sofa for them both. Just. “Dad scored a big commission, so they rented a condo out there for the month to celebrate.”
“Lucky for some…” Elizabeth could feel herself shaking from his closeness. His tone was offhand and casual, but the way the smokiness of his voice curled around the words, he might as well have been whispering dirty fuck-me-talk right in her ear. “So, does this mean you’ve finished your pupillage?”
He picked his own mug up off the glass tabletop. “Yep, I’m now a fully certified and experienced lawyer.”
“That’s great.” Her breath caught as he drank, her eyes immediately fixing on the subtle movements of his throat as he swallowed. Then she noticed his eyes, those intense, baleful blue eyes, burning bright against the inky dark of his pupils, watching her over the rim. She quickly looked away. “What are you going to do now? Take a break here while your parents are away then head off back to the city? Get snapped up by some big firm and become a hotshot city lawyer? I could just see you in the Old Bailey. Parading around in your robe and wig, then hitting the streets with your expensive tailored suits and flash super car. You were always a flash git, even when you and Victor were kids.”
“Ouch,” he mocked a hurt look. Then, putting the mug down, he rounded on her, the force of his presence enough to have her edging back into the sofa. “No, actually I’m here to stay. I took a job with a small firm down in Taunton. And I’m not involved in criminal law. I handle insurance.”
“Insurance?”
“Yeah, insurance, and a bit of property law. It’s less glamorous but steadier.” As he spoke, Elizabeth couldn’t help noticing he was edging closer. “And my clients aren’t likely to throw acid in my face if I can’t get them off.”
Their growing proximity had awareness tingling through her arms, and heat gathering in the pit of her belly. “Fair point. So, you’ve just moved back into your old room? Aren’t you a bit … err big for that now?”
“A little.” He teased and actually winked at her. “That’s why I’m kipping in the spare room while I look for a place of my own.”
“To rent?”
“Afraid so.”
He was getting closer, too close.
“Well it shouldn’t take long to find somewhere, if you know where to look. You know, there are some very nice places over my way.” Fuck, why had she said that.
“I remember.” His voice lowered, growing hotter like the space between them. “You’ll have to show me around, give me the grand tour.”
In spite of herself, Elizabeth’s heart leapt at the idea.
“Sure, pop round anytime you’re free and I’d be happy to show you the neighbourhood.” God, what was she saying? She really needed to stop talking now. But she couldn’t stop herself, it had just come out as her mind swam with the thought of him and her, alone, that body pushing up against her, all hard and male, his wicked mouth doing unspeakable things.
No, this wasn’t good. She needed to get things onto a safer ground. “I know Victor would love it. You haven’t seen him in ages. And it’s such a great place to start a family, I’m sure your girlfriend will love it.”
He smirked, as if he could see how close she was to snapping. And revelled in it. “Well, that sounds great, all I need to do now is to find a wife.”
“Oh, so there’s no one…”
“Oh, there’s someone,” he said. “There has been for a long time. She just doesn’t know it, yet.”
Elizabeth felt a lump developing in her throat, her heart racing like a bird in a cage. “Well, I’m sure she’s a very special girl.”
“She is, but I’m not really interested in girls.” He closed the gap, his big hand moving to gently rest on her denim encased thigh. “I prefer more mature women. Women who know what they want and how to get it.”
She wanted him.
Wanted to touch him, taste him, bite him.
Wanted to lick her way down those delicious abs, tear those damn jeans off with her teeth, and suck his big fucking cock until-
He kissed her hungrily, all heat and instinct.
