Manipulating the List (The Immortal Companion Series)
This is out of my usual reading genre, but I loved the cover and the romance tag too. I was into it by the first chapter. I won’t go on about the plot because it will have to be read to feel it. The main character is Katherine, and she is the only one who can see Jonathan, aka the Collector. When she is only six she witnessed her fatally ill Aunt be lead to heaven by him. It is explained as in a way that is not scary, not dark, but very intriguing. This quote got me to gasp and it was on page #6 “I had no idea that I was the only one who could watch him collect souls, converse with him, or see the final transitions of their souls into the afterlife.”

The Kiss after Midnight (The Midnight Trilogy) by Marvin Amazon @marvazon

I absolutely loved this book and had so many questions for the author. Now I am getting caught up and I have to give away a few copies. When you really enjoy  book and want to give it away that is the clue that it is THAT good.

Here is a review link: https://www.forewordreviews.com/reviews/the-kissaftermidnight/

Here are my questions and his answers:

I read the “about the author” Where does someone from the other side of
the world get such knowledge of NYC? (being a NYer I will say it was so
 accurate)
This was quite difficult as I tried my hardest to make it as authentic as possible, especially as I wanted a core audience to be New Yorker’s. I researched lots and lots of things: parks, street names, hotels, restaurants, parking lots, distance between places  e.t.c. I also secured assistance from some friends of mine living in New York. They helped me with many details, including the way New Yorker’s refer to things, in comparison to how it is done here in the UK.
How did you do research on cartels? I mean the entire set up and family
> tree was very tricky. I myself love when a story is so well put together
that you feel like you need to pay attention. Was it hard to write a
> character that you would not be friends with? or even hate?
The creation of the criminal organization was probably the hardest aspect of this novel. I looked at the possibilities of different types of crime families. At one point, I even considered using the Italian mafia. Once I decided where I wanted to go with the story, I settled with the South/Central American drug cartels as it gave me a lot of scope to work with, especially with some of the story lines yet to come in future books. I read up on the cocaine crime wave of the 70s and 80s. I also researched various characters deemed to be powerful figures during the boom. After familiarizing myself with the hierarchical trees of those organizations, I modified it and made it fit around my story.
Writing some of the characters was difficult. Some really grated at me, and I most definitely hated them. One who comes to mind is Antonio, who I particularly struggled with. For characters like him, I had to focus on the grander plans of the series and the story as a whole, difficult as it was to continue watching him inflicting chaos without any consequences.
The story moved fast and while it did, how did you run three family “saga’s” at the same time?
The three families played a big part in the story and although at times, there was a danger of  over elaborating on certain sections, I strived to ensure that the story flowed and moved forward, while developing the story lines of every family involved.
In just my attempt to be swooning over him, who is Tobias most like? Was
he pure fiction or did you give him qualities of people you know?
I saw Tobias as a man who genuinely had a nice heart. His lifestyle hinted at excess, and on the surface he seemed quite shallow. But as the novel progressed, he started to show his gentler side and became quite a sensitive character. I based him on a number of people I know, including myself. His morals are so close to some I see in myself: The trust he has for others, his habit of seeing the best in everyone and his desire to uncover the truth, even when it could be more beneficial not to.
What  actor would you cast ? (I won’t be the only one who will want to know…wink wink)
The first actor who popped into my head when I started writing him was Alex Pettyfer
alexpettyfer 1
What actor or famous person would you cast as Penelope and Annabel?
These two women will feature significantly in all the books, but I’m still struggling with the best people to play them. Early names I thought of included: Rosario Dawson and Eva Mendes
I think Annabel is Rosario for sure
rosario-dawson-710976876 Rosario is the best pick for Anabel
rossana-najera 2  Rosanna Najera soap actress Rossana-Nájera 1  I think she could turn Tobias’ head when she gets to the club.
I know because of the family type business they were in, family means a
> lot. That said did you favor Rico and Maria? They were the two who I
> thought were most likable. I guess your words are powerful because I liked them both.
Apart from Tobias, Rico was my favorite character in the novel. I sympathized with him many times throughout the book. He truly loved Antonio, even if he didn’t always agree with his actions. I also liked Marie’s character. She reminded Rico of the life he could have if he left the organization. Her love for him was strong.

What is next for you? Can we get a sneak peek into book 2?
I am currently applying the finishing touches to the sequel of my fantasy series, The Corin Chronicles. I will continue with the sequel to The Midnight Trilogy after that one is complete. The title of the sequel is The Midnight Catastrophe. I will add an excerpt early next year.

Just cause I can NOT resist this is the author: (wink omg I can definitely find a place as a NYPD Detective…wink sigh)

As the years go on Katherine is really the only friend that Jonathan has and she cares very deeply for him. Every couple of chapters you are brought into a “new” story line about who will be collected. I will tell you each story line is very different and one did scare me, but I am over 40 and sleep with a night light on. I couldn’t put it down! As for Katherine, she is very likable as Jonathan’s best friend. You would think she would not seem well adjusted but she is. When Katherine tries to manipulate the list she finds herself on, she meets Jennifer. This is by far the best story within the book. Jennifer is having Katherine photograph her at her party that was supposed to be her wedding. She found her boyfriend Jeremy Hopewell cheated on her. So Jeremy ‘s girlfriend is Ashley and poor Jen finds out Ashley is pregnant. So she has been dealt a really poor hand, but is optimistic. Here is Katherine’s dilemma: What does she do when she finds Jennifer’s name on the list? At this point, just read and DO NOT put it down.

Very fast paced and what I loved was how Katherine had no fear of The Collector. Their friendship grew for 16 years. It is a game of manipulation and survival. The best best best part was a sneak peak chapter at book 2. Mercy that made me happy!

“April 28th 1996. The day changed the lives of every Aussie in Australia. No one ever understood the events or what it takes to drive a twenty-eight-year-old man to go out and maliciously murder and injure over fifty people – his friends, family, and townsmen. This man, this Maxwell Cooper, supposedly had been contemplating this plan of attack for years. Not even his family or his live-in girlfriend knew what he had been planning.

I had three thousand dollars left, after paying for the room, my food, and some casual every day clothes. I still had plenty of money to have a proper send-off. I suddenly had nerves of steel, nerves I had never known before. This was the end, but strangely it felt like the beginning.

“Some one-thousand burials took place ‘ere from 1833 to 1877; the majority of them convicts or former convicts. Originally, the convicts were denied the right to have gravestones placed and the only way their graves were to be marked was by the mounds of dirt they were buried under.

Four Shy Girls, Four Big Dreams, One Awesome City:

Book 1 in the Shy-Town Girls Quartet Series

 Shy-Town Girls
This is one of the a few ARC’s I got back in December and now that it is out, so is the review. This will be part of a four book series, each book will be written in one of the characters point of view. This book was a very refreshing change. The beginning is centered on Roberta Bertucci, aka Bobbie a modeling agent. She is in a long term relationship with Charlie, a model she met through work. Charlie is somewhat of a character. Charlie thinks that his looks will do all the work and he can just act like an arrogant fool. So Bobbie decides she is moving out and her old college friend Meryl is providing a new home and a change in lifestyle for her.

We get to know four very different woman who are at different stages of their lives, but manage to become woven tight. At 24 Bobbie is on her own and taking a chance. The other room mates Ella, Ivy and the landlady Barbara provide just the therapy she needs. When she is down, she now has wisdom to pick her up from Barbara. Barbara has tales to tell! Ivy and Ella are like sisters and they welcome Bobbie into the fold.

She grows, learns, and loves in a way she never thought possible. The journey for all of these girls is filled with little life lessons and I know there is something for everyone. While I like my share of details, this book doesn’t provide that. It is refreshing, clean, and something you can recommend to a friend. I think that Bobbie, Meryl, Barbara, Ivy, and Ella, are worth exploring. I loved the brownstone setting and  the city of Chicago as a backdrop.

I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I give it 5 stars

The WordPress stats team have put together the annual report for gtylermills.com. I thought it would be just a bunch of boring numbers and categories, but kudos to them for making it all interesting.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 1,900 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 3 years to get that many views.

It’s no surprise that my top posts were Life After the Comma  and LGM, 10/15. These two posts are about my family.  Throughout the year, those have been the type of posts that are best received. I’m happy to see that because these are by far the posts I enjoy making the most. I think it’s because it’s something everyone can relate to.
