Review:

First let me say that this topic is a tough topic to tackle at any age, but for the main character Kayla it was at a very pivotal time. Kayla’s story starts out really difficult. There are a few conversations, although one sided, between her and her Mom that are VERY hard to read.

virtual bitch slap photo: Virtual Bitch Slap VirtualBitchslap.gif

The point I am trying to make is that her Mother, who obviously has issues, is totally to blame. The author writes this subject matter in a way that makes you totally want to go to Carl’s Junior and smear a jalapeno burger on her face! After that get her some chili cheese fries and force her to eat them all. Yes I hated her and what did did to Kayla and her sister.

Kayla began this dangerous obsession with losing weight just as she meets Cameron. Cameron Bennett is trying, as Kayla resists his advances. He does succeed. Thankfully Cameron is the BEST character in the book. I really think this is a must read! For those who love drama, romance, very difficult subjects and angst. The redemption and healing aspect will make you smile! It will fill up your angst tank for sure.

Image of Monique Sorgen

Monique Sorgen was born and raised in San Francisco, spending summers and winter holidays in Paris, with her mom’s side of the family. Sorgen is half-French. She wrote her first chapter of a book in 5th Grade, based on the adventures, drama, and goings-on of her classmates at her French-American grade school. She sent her writings to Judy Blume, and in return became the proud recipient of a printed form letter and autographed picture, thanking her for being a fan.

Sorgen moved to Los Angeles, shortly before her 18th birthday, to attend UCLA’s school of Theater, Film, and Television, where she studied directing for theater and film. Her directing pursuits lead her to writing screenplays, that she hoped to direct. Her screenplays lead to jobs writing for television, and later lead to jobs writing movies which have yet to be made. Her desire to share her stories without having to wait for a studio’s “green light” lead her to writing novels. The use of the plural in the word “novels” is slightly exaggerated, since this is her first one. Or maybe it’s premonitory, since she plans to write more.

Her debut novel, “How Long You Should Wait to Have Sex”, is based on Sorgen’s true mind-wonderings about how great it would be to get a do-over when a seemingly perfect guy disappears after sex.

The River Way Home: The Adventures of the Cowboy, the Indian, and the Amazon Queen

Review

o “Characters you quickly grow to love and begin to think of as your friends.”

o “A nostalgic novel with an environmental message that illuminates the book without distracting in any way from the fun.”

o “I wished I could go back and visit this beautiful frontier world of a century ago in person, but at least I could take the journey through the pages of The River Way Home where the Florida frontier will live forever more.”

 Blogcritics blogcritics.org/book-review-mary-dawsons-the-river-way-home/

From the Author

Fall in love with the Florida that used to be.

One of the reasons I wrote “The River Way Home” was to let people experience what the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon were like before human beings dredged the canals that connect them and the Caloosahatchee River to Lake Okeechobee.

Florida’s natural systems of wetlands and lakes originally cleansed the runoff from Central Florida by draining it slowly down the Kissimmee Valley through Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades. Today, that water flushes through the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee Rivers into the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, polluting them all, while the Everglades starve.

It’s my hope that everyone who reads “The River Way Home” will get to know the rivers that used to be, fall in love with them as I have, and join the fight to save them and the Everglades.  There has to be a better answer.

Waiting For Pops

Waiting For Pops, a mainstream biographical novel, is a tale of a young boy’s appalling mistreatment at the hands of his alcoholic mother. It is a tale of spousal secrets and parental lies. It is a tale of love, friendship, and, above all else, betrayal. Pops is seen through the eyes of an innocent boy growing steadily into manhood in 1950s Chicago. Johnny Ryba tells his story and transports the reader into his small, blue-collar existence—his mother’s alcoholism, his much-loved father’s sudden death in an auto accident, his beloved little sister’s autism. Later, as the reader accompanies Johnny into his teen years, they experience as well the painful heartbreak of his first love and loss.

The storyline rapidly evolves and ultimately centers on a mystery that Johnny attempts to solve as a mature adult, resulting in a shocking revelation that reverses almost everything he once believed about his mother and father, as well as his own harrowing past. He inadvertently discovers his parents’ role as accomplices in a lifelong conspiracy of silence, and also becomes aware of a misplaced affection for his deceased father. Johnny must finally come to terms with the most important aspect of his life: the truth about his parents, and about himself, too.

Reviews

“WAITING FOR POPS, author John Riffice’s initial foray into the world of fiction, ends up a smashing success! A story of spousal abuse as well as love, friendship, and coming of age make this tome a ‘must read’ for anyone and everyone who just can’t get enough of rock-solid fiction.  A literary ‘Wow!’ for readers of all ages!” – Ann Kempner Fisher, Literary Editor

“John Riffice is a born storyteller, gifted with a mastery of emotional comic nuance and a swaggering sense of character. His WAITING FOR POPS electrifies the page in the most remarkable of ways. This thing shimmers with insight and pulses with plot that never stops barreling forth-a grand achievement from a fine new literary force with whom to reckon. And to applaud most vigorously.” – Bill Zehme, Author of New York Times bestseller THE WAY YOU WEAR YOUR HAT: Frank Sinatra and the Lost Art Of Livin’ and LOST IN THE FUNHOUSE:  The Life and Mind of Andy Kaufman

Dog and Butterfly

From John Philip Riffice, critically acclaimed author of Waiting For Pops, comes a poignant story of fate and the beguiling art of moving on.

After his brother’s untimely passing, Cam Freeland takes in his sister-in-law and four year-old nephew, Charlotte and Jimmy, just until they get on their feet and find a place of their own. But that day never comes. Cam enjoys having them in his life, and they enjoy being there. Cam raises Jimmy almost as though the boy were his son, forming a bond of love, respect, and friendship that will last beyond a lifetime. In doing so, young Jimmy slowly discovers that his uncle Cam is far nobler than he could have ever imagined, a stand-up guy in every respect.

Except one. Cam has a skeleton in his closet, one which shames him terribly, and fate calls on Jimmy to investigate further. He does, and the secret he uncovers surprises him. And so does the next. And the next after that. But the biggest revelation of all lies in Jimmy’s discovery that fate controls every aspect of his life and that there are no accidents and there are no coincidences, just as Uncle Cam had always told him.

Reviews

“Fate rarely feels this poetic and perfectly explored– in one man’s emotional archaeological dig of his own gut, a brilliantly rendered revisiting of each ugly demon that ever haunted him (and so often haunt us all). Riffice lets us inhabit the souls of his lead characters, almost a little too expertly. He feels people and writes them as he feels them, all so wisely–a rare gift.”
—Bill Zehme, Bestselling author of The Way You Wear Your Hat

“A must-read not only for the most avid readers, but especially for anyone who has battled their inner demons and somehow emerged the victor. Without reservation, this is the book to read!”
—Dev Kennedy, Central Regional Vice-President, Actors Equity Association

“A page-turner so enthralling that the reader hopes it goes on forever. Author John Riffice hits back-to-back home runs first with Waiting For Pops and now with Dog and Butterfly. I can hardly wait to see what he’s cooking up next!”
—Kerra Weinert, Independent Book Critic

Author John Riffice passed the first half of his adult life working in heavy industrial construction. After a serious work-related injury, he pursued a lifelong interest in teaching and took up a career in education, culminating in a rewarding life instructing children with disabilities. This experience, coupled with his understanding of the challenges facing single parents as well as all the intimacies of alcoholism, enable him to weave interesting tales of love, friendship, betrayal and deceit. He demonstrates an uncanny ability to paint a unique literary landscape as seen through the eyes of both children and mature adults. He has a grown daughter and lives in Chicago with Karen, his wife of twenty years.

#Guest #Blogger @RadeyahAli #Interview King Hall by Scarlett Dawn @ScarlettDawnUSA #debut

Welcome my guest and fellow blogger R. H. Ali of the blog

R. H. Ali

She is soooo pretty too

I am currently pursuing my Law Degree, at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus while I reside in the beautiful twin island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Despite being flooded with work as the Publications Committee Chairperson on the UWI St. Augustine’s Law Society Executive I still find time to write and paint. My passion for writing can be seen on my own WordPress Blog and Facebook Page ‘Exploring the Mind’, and my Author Facebook Page ‘R.H.Ali’.

I am currently in the writing stages of my first Novel, “AMULET” and I’m actively seeking new ways to broaden the reaches of my writing.

My Drabble ‘Magically Fitted’ is published in Clean Teen Publishing’s Anthology, ‘Wonderstruck’.

Interview with Scarlett Dawn author of King Hall

So as soon as I finished King Hall by Scarlett Dawn, I knew that I wanted more! As such, I asked Scarlett if she would mind doing an interview for my blog and she graciously agreed!! Yay me! So here goes…

~R.H.Ali

Interview with

SCARLETT DAWN, author of KING HALL

What inspired you to write King Hall?

Would you believe this is the first time someone has asked me this specific question? *chuckles* It is. Too bad my answer is so boring.

My inspiration came from another story I had started writing. I knew I was on the verge of something wonderful, but that story just wasn’t good enough.

Blank page.  I started over, twisting the characters, the story…BAM!

King Hall was written.

Is there any character who you actually do not like?

The Head Administrator, Mrs. Jonas.

Do you believe that the theme of acceptance of differences is a large one, plaguing our society today? And did this influence you to develop Lily’s hybrid nature to demonstrate such?

Yes. I hope that one day our society will learn to accept that what might not be comfortable for one person…doesn’t mean that it’s wrong – as long as it’s not detrimental. Only different. And our differences are what make this world so damn interesting when it would be so boring if we all lived inside the same box.

And yes to the second question, though it goes much deeper into the story than just Lily. The struggles of their lives…there is so much going on in this series…so much…that it’s hard to explain without blurting spoilers. But at the core, it’s all about acceptance, and most importantly…love

This is a hint: Even if you’re a fast reader, take it slow. Really read each line.

How long did you take to write King Hall?

Less than a month. And it was a lot longer than the ‘now’ 112,000 word count that it is. Originally it was around 143,000 words.

When is the second installment of King Hall going to be released?

I’m currently in the line editing stage for the next book. After that, it’ll go to my two trusted beta readers. When they’re through with it, I’ll review their notes, and make any changes I deem necessary. My publisher will get it following that. If they accept it as is, then it’ll be anywhere from – approx. – three to six months. In other words, I’m hoping to have it published before March 2014.

What will be the name of the second book?

I’m okay giving this information out. Its current name is: King Cave.

How many books will be in this series?

Lily’s story is a trilogy.

I’m keeping it a secret though as to how many are in The Forever Evermore Novels.

What could we look forward to in the development of Lily and Ezra’s relationship? Will they ever be a couple?

*slow blink* What about Jack?

 My lips are sealed.

Without giving too much spoilers, will we be seeing more deaths in the future?

This – really – saddens me, but yes.

Does it bother you when you have to kill off your characters?

Of course. I’m one of those wacky writers who bawl like a baby when writing a death scene. If I’m not feeling it, writing/expressing the emotions properly of heartache and that gut retching sensation which can sit in the bottom of your stomach-make-you-want-to-hurl feeling, then I don’t believe the reader will feel it either. I want the reader to experience it just as much as the characters are.

How can one of your fans attain a signed copy of one of your books?

King Hall is being released digitally, so there will be no signed paperbacks. But I do plan to purchase some swag once King Hall is fully released in case anyone wants a signed bookmark and such. They only need to contact me via Twitter or Facebook after I send a public message that I have the product available (limited amount, I’m sure).

What other books have you published?

King Hall is my first published novel. I’m very proud. I still have that glow about me.

What words of advice or inspiration would you give to aspiring authors out there waiting to be published?

Easy. Blunt.

If it’s something you truly want…don’t quit. Really. It’s that simple. Keep your chin up, build more thick skin, and move forward.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

First, I would like to thank you for having me here. It’s a lovely place to be! Woot!

Second, to anyone pre-ordering King Hall… *bear hugs*. Thank you!

Third, I truly hope everyone enjoys the world I’ve built inside King Hall’s pages.

My final thoughts with a tiny secretive smile gracing my features, is this:

There are love stories…and then there’s The Forever Evermore Novels.
