Arabelle’s Shadows by Fleur Gaskin @fleurslove

Arabelle's Shadows

So a little synopsis of the book first:

Everything in Arabelle’s life is coming together. She has confidence, great friends, she’s even dating Naak, a wealthy Thai socialite. But there are too many models in Bangkok. Arabelle’s broke, she can’t find an agent in New York, and Naak isn’t as wonderful as he first appears. Slowly the Shadows creep back into Arabelle’s mind, bringing with them thoughts of hopelessness and despair. The vile Shadows know something Arabelle’s refusing to remember and, if she’s not careful, they’ll use it to destroy her. Based on a true story, Arabelle’s Shadows takes us on a journey through the struggles of growing up, not quite making it as an international model, and attempting to overcome a crushing depression

Review

Now I was on the fence a little with this one. I thought, it was more on the lines of a diary. I didn’t really analyse a lot of the mental images I was getting. I also could not identify with models and eating dirt and sleeping 20 to a room. OK I know that is exaggerating, but to be out there having no plan was little odd to me. I understand some people get caught up in modeling and agency talk, but that was the disconnect for me. I don’t think the relations were real either it was more like I need somewhere to stay, so I trade sex and a companion for drugs and a bed. So I was not really a fan. I really hate saying that, but I have to. Especially when I see glowing 5 star ratings. I feel guilty. Like I was disconnected from the story, so theoretically there must be a reason. I will take the blame I guess.

I think maybe the feeling reading someone’s private diary is taboo was a reason I liked it. For Arabelle, the stereotypical model sort of fits the build. The other like was the scenery and the journey as a model struggling to find her way. Some parts of the story were a little rough and edgy.

Book Description

Val Wilson hates celebrities. Being raised in Hollywood by the Legendary Caroline Carter will have that effect on a person. When Val’s mother carries on the tradition of causing yet another drunken scene to celebrate her birthday, her best friend Daisy decides she needs a night out. Val reluctantly agrees to go but unbeknownst to her, she’s just stumbled into the very same bar as the current Hollywood It Boy, Bobby Patrick.

Val’s friends keep her in the dark about Bobby’s identity and an unexpected night of fun with a hint of humiliation ensues. Bobby is determined to break through the obvious wall she’s put up, no matter how much sass she throws at him. Once her most sacred secret is exposed Val can’t deny her feelings any longer and a passionate, undeniably core-quaking love consumes them.

Their new relationship becomes vulnerable as Caroline sets their demise in her sights but Bobby helps Val understand she will never have the relationship with her mother she’s always yearned for and more importantly she doesn’t deserve the drunken, heartbreaking mental abuse she’s dealt with since a child. Will Bobby’s love be enough for Val to finally stand up to her Mother?

Can Val accept that when it comes to what’s in your heart, you should NEVER THINK?

Love Lost by Love Belvin (Love’s Improbable Possibility #1) #author #spotlight @LoveBelvin

Synopsis

You ever wonder what events led up to an individual’s inability to trust? Love Lost starts off by peeling back layers of a young girl who experienced the loss of essential, reliable and nurturing love.

Rayna Brimm, hailing from an inner city in New Jersey, survives a series of betrayal and loss only to forge forward in self-preservation and obtain an education in North Carolina. After receiving her degree, vowing never return home, she finds herself in California where she tries to build a self-contained life. She made a personal declaration to get through life without further dependence on others in order to avoid yet another heartbreak. Only, fate said otherwise.

Enter Azmir Jacobs, a tall, dark, handsome and very wealthy man, who has street credibility and executive power in the corporate world. Azmir has money, power and beautiful women at his beck and call, BUT only one woman has caught his eye. The resilient Rayna Brimm, a woman whose dysfunctional upbringing contributes towards her tough skin, issues with trust and a deep-seated fear to love, turns out to be more than he bargained for when he discovered her in his boardroom presenting a leasing proposal.

Rayna isn’t the only one with a checkered past. Can Azmir conceal his convoluted life long enough to prove that he can provide Rayna the stable and reliable love that she clearly needs and deserves? Or will his lofty lifestyle and endless resources scare her away?

Just when you thought you’d begun the read of an urban novel, you turn the pages and find this is by no means an urban novel, but the journey of a classic love tale and a story of redemption instead. The Love’s Improbable Possibility series is a slow weaving journey of love. Be prepared to progress into the world of Rayna Brimm. A story of love’s redemption.

About Me

I really hate talking about myself. My goal is to have the shortest author bio imaginable. I would much rather have a conversation with my readers.

Are you able to escape within my pages?
Does my writing make you feel something?
Are there characters that you can’t get out of your head?

Let me know!

Random Things about Me

– I was so much smarter as a teenager.

– I am a slow reader.

– I tend to like a book more for its characters than its plot.

– I appreciate people who are genuinely kind and come through when you need them.

– It’s true, creative people are not always fun to live with, but we keep things interesting.

– I miss the days when all I had was a rotary phone without even an answering machine.

– I’m a child of the 1980s, and a teenager of the 1990s.

– I love my dog.

– I love to travel and see new places – when my limited budget allows.

– I think in another lifetime I lived in the UK somewhere by the coast.

– When I feel an emotion, I feel it deeply. It’s a curse.

– I have an overactive imagination. Writing helps alleviate that problem.

– Nine times out of ten, I believe a good book trumps reality hands down.

As a young paramedic, Adam rescues people for a living but cannot save himself. Katie, just out of high school, struggles with a tortured home life she cannot escape.

Everything changes when Katie hops into the front seat of Adam’s ambulance. Overwhelmed by what they are feeling, neither possess the confidence to make the first move. They walk away from each other, full of regret.

To find her, Adam risks his future. To be with him, Katie sacrifices her security.

Little do they know, what little time they do have, is being measured by a heartbeat that is slowly dying out.

COME WHAT MAY

Book 2 in the HEARTBEAT series
Adam is through with love.

He unravels blaming himself for what happened with Katie.

His final moments with her echo through his nightmares.

She owns him body and soul.

To dull the pain, Adam invites a string of women into his bed. Fueled by alcohol and desperation, his meaningless hook-ups provide little comfort. When he closes his eyes, it’s Katie he sees.

The only one who helps to ease his guilt somewhat is Jada. But as his new ambulance partner, Adam considers her off limits. He doesn’t want to get seriously involved with anyone, much less her. Yet he can’t stop fantasizing about the feel of her caramel skin against his.

Despite his intentions, Adam’s bond with Jada deepens as they respond to a series of emotional calls. Their mutual attraction becomes undeniable. But how can he give his heart to Jada when it still belongs to Katie?

After three years in New York carving out her career niche, and a tempestuous romance behind her, Claire Fitzpatrick can hardly wait to get back to L.A. to her new job as senior feature writer at Choices L.A., but most of all to the security and comfort of her best friend Julian West.  To her, he’s the nice guy she can turn to for advice and comfort – the uncomplicated friend she can count on.  Only he no longer feels that way.

For months before she went to New York, he fooled her, playing the platonic friend when in fact he wants nothing more than to take her as his lover – and more, much more.  But he can’t do that – he can’t let those emotions overtake him – not again.  But on her first night home he blows his cover. And suddenly Claire sees him in a whole new light.

About The Author

Writing is Helen Karol’s great love and she finally decided to stop talking about it and made time to devote to it.  Chances and Choices is her debut novel. She is a Canadian, currently living in England.  As an international teacher of language, literature, media and film, she was thrilled to discover a variety of cultures and countries.  Before teaching, she was a photographer in the Canadian Air Force – until motherhood made basic training seem like a vacation!  A mother and a very, very young grandmother she treasures time with her family.  When not writing she can be found watching fitness videos while eating cream cakes – one of these days she really will start joining in.  Honest!

A Note from Helen

I write stories I love to read. My students will tell you I am cynical but the fact is – scratch a cynic and you find a romantic!  So I really am a romantic at heart and write and devour romance of any kind.   So naturally I write romantic love stories.  I love strong yet nice guy, tender heroes –the bad boy has never really grabbed me – well okay maybe once or twice but I never let him hold on for that long!

I have been lucky to write about and teach media and film for years and so I l am a big fan of romantic comedy, as well as crime and supernatural films and television.  I particularly love the ones with a great enduring love story where they are friends as well like Hart of Dixie, Vampire Diaries and Bones.

Julian and Claire’s love story is a combination of these – enduring friendship, romance, a subtle alpha male, a strong female, a bad boy and girl we love to hate, along with cast of characters and a dollop of tongue in cheek humour here and there.  The other characters will have their own love stories in the series but we still follow all the other couples.

Oh and I also love magazines, fashion and the world of film and television so that is where the action is set.  Most of all it is about the joy of love, deep enduring relationships and not being afraid to embrace emotions good and bad.

If you LOVE Young Adult and New Adult especially with some fantasy and elements of reality, then this is for YOU. Scarlett Dawn’s new book King Hall sounds amazing to me! I have already preordered my copy and it’s only $2.99 right now. I think this book is going to be fabulous! Here is the summary via Amazon:

A fresh, meaty, sink-your-teeth-in-and-hold-on-tight new adult fantasy series kicks off with King Hall…

King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.

Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing: survival. Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings. Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Rulers: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.

Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realizes the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the Revolution.

A great Interview HERE at Exploring the Mind Blog

Freshman Forty (Book #1, Freshman Forty Series) by Christine Duval #review @christineduval1

When eighteen-year-old Laurel Harris discovers she’s pregnant four weeks into the start of her freshman year at prestigious Colman College, she has all intentions of telling her father. But being away at school makes it too easy to hide. And while she can’t explain to her friends, or to herself even, the reasons why she doesn’t want the baby’s father to find out about the pregnancy, the rest of her world begins to unravel.

Freshman year is hard enough. Most girls get through by forming close friendships, finding new boys and a phone call from mom or dad on Sunday. Laurel has to navigate all of it while hiding an unplanned pregnancy from a summer fling…

An imperfect heroine plagued by bad choices and haunted by the memory of her deceased mother and grandparents, readers are sure to identify with Laurel as she navigates teen pregnancy, in secret, in a remote college setting.

My Review:

The book was a little short and although the premise was good, something was missing. I think if the communication issues were brought up more or something to justify the secret it would have been better. For someone in the situation of having only a Dad, I would have thought different. If there is no communication and certainly no relationship, then there is no respect. If you dont respect your Dad then why care what his thoughts were?

A little disconnect for me relating to the choice without having any plan and neglect during it. Making the choice to have the baby is big enough, but then to say she was keeping it was huge. What she did was ditched a lot of the plan (health wise) for no apparent reason and that was not appealing. There were parts where her physical health was neglected because she didn t tell her family. She found a Doctor to care for her without getting paid. That was really other issue I had. I know in the end that was explained, but it just didn’t click with me. That was so sad. I related to Laurel in a lot of ways especially having a daughter her age. I clearly understood why she was dishonest and hid from everyone, but she did a dis-service to herself.

The good thing was she found a support group and some good friends. The others in the cast showed more aspects of young pregnancy. That was a definite plus. The other was that is did nothing to glamorize the situation. I think that the message was safe sex is just that safe!

3 .5 stars

Christine Duval

Christine Duval has been writing creatively since the fourth grade when she penned her first short story entitled “London Terror,” about the murder of a cat in London. She grew up on the North Shore of Long Island and lived in Italy twice as a teenager: once when she was sixteen in Bologna and in a small town on the Adriatic Sea called Porto San Giorgio; then in Florence when she was nineteen. Her parents wondered if she’d ever come back.

College was spent in the Finger Lakes: the inspiration for Colman, Milton, and Kashong Lake in Freshman Forty. It really is cold, wet and grey there – OFTEN! But when the sun comes out, boy is it pretty.

Life eventually took her to New York’s Upper West Side, the place she’ll always consider home. Though for now she resides in New Jersey with her family and a very spoiled love bird who can’t decide if he’s a boy or she’s a girl.

Inevitable (Harmony Series #1) by Angela Graham @angelagraham01 #review #giveaway

Genre: New Adult Romance
(Book 1 of 2)
-Book 2 is expected out October 1st 2013

Review:

Don’t get me started on how I WANT the next book. I saw a promo for this and when I went to Amazon to buy it I saw people has the absolute sheer stupidity to take stars off a rating because it was a book 1 in the series. It is clear and explicit that it is a series and not a standalone read. Why be negative? I don’t understand that. The author didn’t say it is a series and book one is tied up with a little bow and perfect ending. No matter how many times I saw “cliffhanger” in the reviews I still wanted to scream. For me I totally defend the book, series and the cliffhanger. Maybe I should go through some like The Siren, how long did we wait for book 2. Oh wait Kristen Ashley cranks them out so fast and I waited for Dream Man. I didn’t see people bitch that she produced with no sequel ready either. Oh let me please mention Gabriel and his Inferno how long was that??? Give me a break and read on….

It reminded me a lot of a Kristen Ashley book. I don’t ever say that easily or lightly. The characters for example were really good. Start with Cassandra. A really young, raw, naive, jilted, smart, 22 year old and recent college grad. She has been wronged and is not the usual example of being wronged. She deals with it in her own way. I liked her style!

Then her best friend Hillary is great. They are similar in many ways and the relationship works for me. You learn about her Grandparents, her Mother Felicia and her beginnings

Now for the Caleb and Hillary thing; she crushed on him since, well forever  This is another reason why the supporting cast in a book is so vital. It is needed. This book has great bones, strong foundation and a structure that is now solid.

Mark is the loser who was caught with the tramp Mackenzie in page 4. She shows up again a few times and well he does too.

So forge ahead and let me say Logan is juicy! He is a great character who, like the others, is well rounded. He is who he is, does what he does and has no regrets. He is truthful and bold and that is why I liked the character. He has a history that is discussed and you will get the reason why he is so delicious to me.

Last in the support arena is Oliver, Logan’s son who is 4 and Julia, his sister. Julia is a bit of a spitfire with major opinions on Logan;s lifestyle. She never hides or shy’s away from what she thinks is right or wrong. There will be a point where she really shows her loyalty to Logan and Oliver.

Pull yourself together Cassandra! So many times she says this and I get a laugh out of it.

I love the way the book had drama, bad dates, scary dates, good morning jog scenes, and friendship. That being said I loved it and I am giving a bunch away!
