Romancing the Bookworm by Kate Evangelista @KateEvangelista @tale_of_reviews #Review

Sometimes, even the best-laid plans can unravel.

It’s spring break, and Tamara Winters would rather stay on campus and read romance novels than flaunt her size-fourteen body on a beach. But her best friend, Ronni, has other ideas. Against her wishes, Tamara is whisked away to picturesque Maverick Bay, where she’s wrangled into waiting tables with Ronni at the Shore Shack for its busy week leading to Maverick’s Surf Invitational. There she meets fellow schoolmate Xavier Solomon, the Invitational’s organizer and campus womanizer by reputation. From the moment Tamara sees him emerging from the waves like a hero in of one of her romance novels, all she wants to do is run away from the feelings he inspires in her.

Little does she know Xavier has been watching her for weeks now. In fact, after failed attempts at asking her out on campus, he’s concocted a crazy plan: fabricating romantic situations straight out of her favorite books. Xavier quickly realizes that if Tamara gets a whiff of his designs, he might as well spell CREEPER across his forehead. Yet as they grow closer, he’s convinced it’s a risk worth taking. What he hasn’t planned on, of course, is his drug-addicted, alcoholic stepbrother, who decides to join the fun and put a wrench in Xavier’s scheme.

Spring break is proving hotter than Tamara expected. Will her romance novels be able to compete?

Review:

This was my sort of read so I gobbled it right up. A really great chick lit beach read. The character of Tamara is loveable with a capital L. I know that if this is your genre, she will get an A+ for character creation. Amen! A girl who loves to read and has her nose in a book. I think millions of us can agree that is relateable. I think it helped from the start to identify with Tamara.

The part of the story focusing on surfing was cool. I love to watch it and being in California, it is everywhere. So I adore something I can relate to.

Tamara is not the sexy I need a little mascara and lip gloss girl. She is a typical average sized woman! So it has a few good men, namely Ronni, Zander and Xavier. They are all equally loveable.  They make you shut down and enjoy. There really is nothing better than good characters that engross you. Xavier and his plan were one of my favorite parts of the book. I won’t give away any of that, but he wants someone……..

Overall this was a really great summer beach read! There were a few naughty parts, but nothing over the top. We all want sex but for the story purpose of course LOL. So grab it and enjoy something light, romantic and fluffy. If you have friends like Tamara say a little thank you and value them.

Title: Celestina Silvenfare: The Legend Begins

Series: Silvenfare Series, #1

Author: Kelly Lynne

Publisher: Ink Smith Publishing

Genre: Fantasy

Blurb:

Celestna Silvenfare is an elemental sorceress and the prophesied savior of her world, but not until her14th birthday does she truly understand the danger she must face in order to fulfill her destiny and save the lives of those she loves.  Join her as she embarks on a journey to discover what it takes for one young girl to rise above her own dreams, desires, flaws, and personal tragedies, to restore balance to the land and save all the races of Merellier.

Excerpt:

“Now then, Celestina Silvenfare, how would you like to meet a Goddess?” Before Cele could reply, the air around them began to vibrate, rocking the table and rattling the dishes. When it was over, a stunning woman appeared before Cele and the faerie queen, who immediately kneeled before the Goddess. Cele did likewise, not having any idea what the protocol was for meeting a Goddess. The tall, brown-haired woman walked over to Cele and placed her hand upon her head. When she did this, Cele’s mind began reeling with several vibrant images. She saw Meréllier as it might be in several years …the land was pillaged, women and children suffered cruel fates, and widespread wars and plagues ravaged the realm. The sights and sounds were very vivid and seemed too real for Cele. She swooned, but still the Goddess held her in place, forcing her to see more…

Book Review

Val Wilson hates celebrities! When she is introduced there are snippets of the real aspects. By real, I mean tangible aspects of Hollywood. The reasons Val’s Mom Caroline is legendary. She has a drinking problem, she speaks outs, and she has reason to act crazy.  Caroline Carter went through a huge ordeal  that eventually comes out. Now I won’t say it justifies her actions, but it does clarify why she is the way she is.

Val’s is going to celebrate her birthday with her  best friend Daisy. I really liked the Daisy character. The most important characteristic of Daisy was friendship. Since Val was 6 Daisy was by her side, more like a sister. Daisy’s Mom Annie was the Nanny/Housekeeper with the biggest heart. All of the reveals concerning them were great. Daisy and Val have lived together for a while. Daisy has an attitude about men that is, well thinking like a man. She doesn’t get attached, she has fun until she is done, then moves on. Daisy you are awesome! I really can’t wait for you to read what happens with Daisy.

f23b6-bff-1

Back to the story line. Val has Daisy and a twin set of guys  (Paul and Adam) They are all very close, for many reasons and the base is always friendship. Adam decides on a night out, let us celebrate and liquor Val up. Always there for Val and they worry she will go into a downward spiral. They were a really important part of the sub-plot. They have some quick and snappy dialogue that was a high light for me.

Bobby has a best friend in Sean.  Bobby is the Hollywood It Boy. The funny part in the first few chapters about the beginning of their night is Val no knowing who Bobby is. She doesn’t buy into the whole Hollywood scene, so meeting him doesn’t mean a thing. That was SO important to the story. Val was not star struck, in awe, or drooling, she was just Val. Her friends dont fess up either, but that is what makes the bond strong. They always shield her, because of her upbringing.

When the small reveals happen, Val takes them on. She dives into work at her “self funded” animal shelter. She does so much with animals out of love and really really enjoys her job.

The plot is delicious! This has a romance, a deep family issue and I know my romantic suspense readers will love it. This is also a debut. For me, when I read something so good as a debut, I thinking there is so much more to come. Now readers, come and embrace Val, Daisy Adam and Bobby!

Will Bobby’s love be enough for Val to finally stand up to her Mother?

Can Val accept that when it comes to what’s in your heart, you should NEVER THINK?

Review:

I must admit the beginning of the book got me into it fast! I liked the idea of a few really close girlfriends acting like a trio of alpha males on the loose. Jillian has a mental block when it comes to relationships. The girls have this fishing thing going and they are happy to catch and let them swim away. I think when it runs it’s course and her friends seem to be dropping into the relationship lifestyle, she seems more determined to keep her rule in place.

So of course a little plan goes awry and Liam is introduced. The way is very cliche and I had to look past that. I am not spoiling anything but who is picked as a partner on the project? Please it was a neon sign.

What I didn’t like was the extreme negative attitude she had towards him. He does state he is from a family of all girls, so I am sure he probably chalked up the first 20 nasty comments as PMS. It was too much for me to swallow honestly. That was where, for me, it went wrong. There is not a guy in the world I know that will be put off, spoken rudely to and told NO so many times and keep coming back. I understood that Jill had a mom who was probably nastier than she was, for a good reason (that is spoiler alert), but still so overboard.

It was really when a sort of truth came out that made a redemption possible. Still, it hurts to think that he saw her as a challenge. Maybe it was a manly sports like mentality. I dont know.

Synopsis:

Twenty-one year-old Jillian Nichols only has one rule when it comes to boys: catch and release. Boy-catching isn’t just a game for Jillian and her friends, it’s a lifestyle. After all, boys might be good for a dance or a drink and certainly a little under-cover action of the scandalous variety, but expect much else and you’re bound for heart ache.

So when her best friends and fellow boy catchers start dropping like flies junior year, Jillian is determined to keep boys in her bedroom and out of her heart. Until she meets Liam McAvoy, the kind of guy that sticks around to make waffles and who can’t—or perhaps won’t—take a hint.

Study abroad student Liam doesn’t want to be another notch on Jillian’s bedpost. Actually he has much more interesting ideas for Jillian and her bedposts, but his student visa’s set expiration date means he can’t promise her forever. That doesn’t mean he’s going to walk away from the challenge of discovering why Jillian is hell-bent at keeping people at a distance.

Before long, neither is sure who is catching who—or if they’re playing for keeps. Jillian knows one thing though: falling in love will not only break the only rule of boy-catching, it could also break her heart.

Book Description

Publication Date: July 10, 2013

As a pampered Los Angeles teen, Portia McGee once created a bucket list with her best friends Tarry and Niki. Though falling in love topped their list, it was the last thing she could ever imagine doing. Through the rejection of her parents, Portia learned early in life that love is elusive.

Now a famous and frivolous A-list actress, Portia has a Hollywood pedigree sealed in gold by a celebrity actress mother and New York mogul father. When Portia’s latest role requires an elaborate temporary tattoo, she meets Will, a gifted tattoo artist with a tortured past. The attraction is electric and immediate, but Will refuses to take the encounter to the next level—a decision Portia associates with the ring he so clearly wears on his wedding finger. Those old, familiar feelings of rejection take hold, and Portia now realizes that she must face the past in order to forge a new future. As their deep bond ignites in Portia an unexpected spirituality, can she finally free herself to once again chase the stars of her early days? Both richly glamorous and rich in meaning, Chasing Stars is a sparkling celebration of how faith and love can conquer even the most challenging of circumstances to uplift the human soul.

Chasing Stars is the debut work of romantic fiction by L. Duarte that charts the improbable, rousing romance between two star-crossed lovers, and the journey both must take to open their hearts to renewed hope and lasting love. At once soulful and playful, it’s certain to transport anyone who still, deep down, has faith in the abiding power of second chances.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Chasing Stars is intended for mature readers, containing sexual content and strong language.

Drawn to you full size 72

Tell me in three succinct descriptions who you are.

1) cat and dog lover, 2) daughter and twin sister 3) and as creepy as it sounds, I am a major people watcher

      What’s your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?

I love to walk. Now that it’s summer and my schedule isn’t as hectic as it used to be, I walk thirty or forty blocks. And I don’t like to stop.

What chore do you dislike doing?

Laundry. As a kid and teenager, I’d always ended up doing everyone’s laundry.

What is your favorite time of the day?

I love mornings; I am more alert and energetic than any other time of the day or night.

What’s your least favorite mode of transportation?

Trains. It can be congested and people are at their worst when they don’t have space to move their arms and legs.

      What sound do you love?

I love the sound of my infant cousins soundly asleep.

      What sound do you dislike?

I dislike hearing constant blaring horns and loud arguments outside of my window.

Who is your favorite author or favorite book?

There are so many fantastic authors and books that I love. I repeat: so many fantastic authors and books that I love. With that stated, I LOVE J.R Ward and can’t wait to get to Lover At Last. I need a weekend away from everything so that I can devote hours to the latest Blackdagger Brotherhood novel as is required. For anyone who doesn’t like paranormal or urban fantasy like I hadn’t years ago, I really believe that her character-driven stories and swoon-worthy alpha males can make anyone at least like vamps.

What inspired you to write Drawn To You?

Writing Beth and Chase’s story enabled me to truly escape into their worlds

and de-stress. I hope others enjoy reading it as much I enjoyed writing it.

Excerpt 1:

 Bethany

I thought that I’d heard someone knocking on my door last night. When I’d finally put on my nightgown, no one had been there. I must have been disoriented from not getting a good night’s sleep for the past few days.

I jolted at the soft knock and movement the doorknob on my door. I couldn’t have been going crazy this time. When I opened the door, Chase was standing in front of me in a white t-shirt and pressed black pants and shoes. It didn’t occur to me that we should talk on more neutral ground. I already trusted him and I couldn’t explain why and it scared me a little. Anticipation coiled low in my belly.

Chase’s hands landed on my shoulders. The force of his touch made my back lean against the door, shutting it closed. A faint line marred his brows as he studied me. Greeting him with an open smile, his features smoothed out.

“I knocked on your door last night.”

At the party last night, Cassidy had asked me if I’d be fine if Rylan drove me here. Since I hadn’t wanted to ruin her night, I’d told her that it was cool.

“By the time I got up, I didn’t see anyone.”

Sighing deeply, I watched as his beautiful hazel eyes swept over my collarbone and drifted down towards my breasts and back to my face hungrily. I never wanted that look to go away.

“I knocked for twenty minutes. I didn’t know if you’d fallen asleep or if you were ignoring me.”

Shaking my head “no”, I moved away from the door and sank down on the bottom of my bed. He joined me, his arm touching mine. The scent of soap and a light aftershave washed over me.

 “Did anything happen last night?”

I frowned at his question. “Not at all.”

He blew out a sigh of relief. “Take out your cell phone and put in your password.” His tone was gentle and commanding at the same time.

I retrieved my phone from the side pocket of my nightgown and handed it to him after I unlocked it.

Smiling, I watched as he entered his number into my phone. I heard chirruping and realized that he called himself from my phone.

 “Nice ringtone.”

“Don’t worry. You’re gonna have a better ringtone than that.” He chuckled and stood up. “We need to be able to get a hold of each other. I forgot to exchange numbers with you yesterday. I put in Pierce’s and Nancy’s numbers too.”

I tilted my head in agreement. Being alone with Chase in my guestroom was like sampling a treat instead of consuming it in one bite. He stroked his knuckles along my jaw and his voice softened. “I gotta go to the work. I’ll see you later, though, okay?”

I shivered and he dropped his hand from my face. Chase had the firmest ass I’d ever seen. And that was the only positive about his departure. Was any part of him not firm?

Love Lost by Love Belvin @lovebelvin #review

Title: Love Lost

Author: Love Belvin

Series:  Love’s Improbable Possibility #1

Purchase: Amazon ~ Kobo ~ Smashwords ~ B&N ~ Diesel ~ Sony

Love Lost begins with a tough upbringing. The main character Rayna Brimm is in a home that is broken and she has never had a role model. Being a New Yorker, I know the scene and the surrounding areas. For someone to make it out of the projects without help is not really common and I will almost say rare. The beginning of the book is filled with a lot of street talk, but it is, I kept telling myself part of the history of Rayna.

How Rayna and her family are scattered is a somewhat difficult tale. I couldn’t connect with a girl embroiled in this life and completely surrounded by drugs and chaos. She is with a boy who is a low level trouble maker. He cheats, lies, does and sells drugs. Some how, this is what was hard to swallow, Rayna rises above. I guess she studied while her crack head Mom was scoring and she had nothing else to do. A short while her grand parents were talked about but it seems they could care less about Rayna.

She ends up (no spoilers) in North Carolina going to college. This was the dis connect for me. I could see, relating to my own east coast area, a kid in Washington Heights growing up and maybe going to a state college to try to rise above. I for one have been in California for a few years and I will never get the Brooklyn out of me. I talk and act exactly the same even with higher education. I could be wrong but you don’t de-ghetto in a week. The references to fashion and a type of shoe was baffling to me. My only thought was a story many years ago I read about Oprah Winfrey. She said once she made it and had a segment on the news that she was going to buy good sheets and towels. This was something she dreamed of a, nice 1000 count Egyptian cotton sheet set. She talked about luxury bath towels and that story always stuck with me. Even as I watched Oprah grow, I saw her constantly talk about money. She always told people that Bill Cosby told her to always sign your checks and keep a value in your head. So, for Rayna blowing money on Louis Vuitton anything was a hairball in my throat. I hope what I wrote here makes sense.

She gets a room mate and best friend who is upper middle class. I mean Rayna had to be really “rough around the edges” and it was unspoken how she was accepted. I think maybe if people talked about her slang and made reference that she was lacking class I could have felt better. So her room mate goes home to California and Rayna is in tow and gets a job with the family business. She works towards her therapy degree and wants to focus on sports related therapy. Enter Azmir Jacobs, a man who was into Rayna. I guess he also had a similar background. Again no spoilers. Azmir and Rayna together or getting together was the love story.

blog rating ouch

I won’t say I hated the book. I just had a few issues and would never post a review like this. I was asked to read book 2 and see if it gave me some closure and some answers. I will read book 2 and I hope I get that. A story of love’s redemption… something to think about.
