Review:

First let me say that this topic is a tough topic to tackle at any age, but for the main character Kayla it was at a very pivotal time. Kayla’s story starts out really difficult. There are a few conversations, although one sided, between her and her Mom that are VERY hard to read.

The point I am trying to make is that her Mother, who obviously has issues, is totally to blame. The author writes this subject matter in a way that makes you totally want to go to Carl’s Junior and smear a jalapeno burger on her face! After that get her some chili cheese fries and force her to eat them all. Yes I hated her and what did did to Kayla and her sister.

Kayla began this dangerous obsession with losing weight just as she meets Cameron. Cameron Bennett is trying, as Kayla resists his advances. He does succeed. Thankfully Cameron is the BEST character in the book. I really think this is a must read! For those who love drama, romance, very difficult subjects and angst. The redemption and healing aspect will make you smile! It will fill up your angst tank for sure.

The Author

Monique Sorgen was born and raised in San Francisco, spending summers and winter holidays in Paris, with her mom’s side of the family. Sorgen is half-French. She wrote her first chapter of a book in 5th Grade, based on the adventures, drama, and goings-on of her classmates at her French-American grade school. She sent her writings to Judy Blume, and in return became the proud recipient of a printed form letter and autographed picture, thanking her for being a fan.

Sorgen moved to Los Angeles, shortly before her 18th birthday, to attend UCLA’s school of Theater, Film, and Television, where she studied directing for theater and film. Her directing pursuits lead her to writing screenplays, that she hoped to direct. Her screenplays lead to jobs writing for television, and later lead to jobs writing movies which have yet to be made. Her desire to share her stories without having to wait for a studio’s “green light” lead her to writing novels. The use of the plural in the word “novels” is slightly exaggerated, since this is her first one. Or maybe it’s premonitory, since she plans to write more.

Her debut novel, “How Long You Should Wait to Have Sex”, is based on Sorgen’s true mind-wonderings about how great it would be to get a do-over when a seemingly perfect guy disappears after sex.

Fall in love with the Florida that used to be.

One of the reasons I wrote “The River Way Home” was to let people experience what the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon were like before human beings dredged the canals that connect them and the Caloosahatchee River to Lake Okeechobee.

Florida’s natural systems of wetlands and lakes originally cleansed the runoff from Central Florida by draining it slowly down the Kissimmee Valley through Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades. Today, that water flushes through the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee Rivers into the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, polluting them all, while the Everglades starve.

It’s my hope that everyone who reads “The River Way Home” will get to know the rivers that used to be, fall in love with them as I have, and join the fight to save them and the Everglades. There has to be a better answer.
