Book Review:

Dumped by her hotshot boyfriend and boss, Layla Lewis quits her job and heads to Trecastle to house-sit for a friend. The fact that she had a boyfriend who was a loser and messed around wasn’t bad enough but, he was her boss! Her BFF Hannah is a bartender and she takes up with her and helping at her bar/restaurant. From a totally classic chick-lit drama filled book emerges a femme hero in Layla and Hannah. These girls were the total package to me.

With the girls come Joe, Penny and Richard. Now for Penny and Richard, that part of the book was in my opinion the best. It has to be read and enjoyed the way I did.  I felt like Penny made a boo boo, a little slip up and Richard was over the top. I didn’t like how he treated her and how her own self punishment seemed to go on and on. Poor Penny. I think she should have lied, but that is just me.

I really enjoyed it and I loved the fact that there were usual and typical slang words. They were NOT over used and it will translate well here in the states as for any chick lit lover from the UK and London as well. That is important. I have seen too many reviews get a little off because of the punctuation and slang.

So add this one to the “beach reach” list for sure!

About the Author

One of those rare creatures—a true Brightonian—Shani was born and bred in the sunny seaside town of Brighton on the UK’s south-coast. One of the first literary conundrums she had to deal with was her own name: Shani can be pronounced in a variety of ways, but in this instance, it’s Shay-nee not Shar-ney or Shan-ni, although she does indeed know a Shanni—just to confuse matters further! Hobbies include reading, writing, eating, and drinking—all four of which keep her busy enough. After graduating from Sussex University with a degree in English and American Literature, Shani landed a job at a well-known holiday company. Although employed as a Brochure Production Executive, she promptly reinvented herself as a Copywriter, a new position they were happy (if a tad bewildered) to concede to. At twenty-four, Shani became a freelance copywriter and has been one ever since, in-between writing novels, that is. Contemporary romance The Runaway Year is her first book and set between Brighton and North Cornwall, the latter a home-from-home for Shani, her husband, and three lovely kids. She also has a penchant for Glastonbury, another magical place, and don’t even get her started on Scotland—we’d be here all day!

Book Description:

Dumped by her hotshot boyfriend and boss, Layla Lewis quits her job and heads to Trecastle to house-sit for a friend. Trecastle isn’t new to her; it’s a place where she holidayed regularly with her now-estranged mother. It’s also the home of Hannah McKenzie, her childhood friend. Hannah has tempted her with a place to live and a job in the local pub. Needing time to nurse her battered heart and escape her “real life” for a year, Layla accepts.

Hannah is a talented artist as well as a barmaid. She lives in the village center with her boyfriend Jim, a singer in a local band. They are happy together, or as happy they can be, considering. Hannah loves Jim, but there is someone she loves more: her old boyfriend Joseph Scott, who is also Jim’s best friend and soon to be Layla’s neighbor.

Meanwhile, Layla’s fiery yet loyal friend Penny seeks revenge on her behalf, sending a forged email that could damage her ex’s business prospects. Penny wonders if she has gone too far but is soon preoccupied with her own problems: the sizzle has fizzled in her marriage, and she feels neglected. After getting frisky with Dylan one night, she confesses all to her husband—and he’s been like ice ever since.
Over the course of a year, there is laughter and heartache as all three endeavor to reign in their love lives—discovering you can run all you like, but you just can’t hide.

Losing Francesca

By J. A. Huss

Expected Publication: July 1, 2013

Genre: Mature Young Adult Contemporary Romance

Francesca Sabatini came to America to take in the sights, celebrate her high school graduation, and have fun wasting time before college starts in the fall.

That’s not what happens.

Fresh off the plane and barely on American soil more than a handful of minutes, Francesca’s face is recognized by TSA scanners to be a match for a child who was kidnapped twelve years ago.

Brody Mason remembers the day Fiona Sullivan went missing during a family vacation in Italy and it’s haunted him his whole life. So when Francesca shows up at the Sullivan farm down the road, he’s compelled to figure out if this girl really is his long lost friend.

But Francesca knows she’s not Fiona Sullivan. She knows exactly who she is. At least she thinks she knows – until Brody Mason relentlessly pursues her and she begins to have feelings for him. Maybe being Fiona isn’t so bad?

Reality becomes blurred, secrets are revealed, and life will never be the same when the final questions are answered: Is she Francesca or Fiona? And where does she really belong?

Losing Francesca is a YA/NA crossover contemporary romance

I lie back on the beach and put my hands behind my head. “So, we’re gonna spend the whole summer hanging out and I’m not allowed to get to know you even in the most basic and simple ways? Is that how this is gonna go, Fee?”

She lies back next to me and turns on her side, her eyes searching mine. “Why do you insist that I am her? I’m not her, Brody. This fact will hurt you if you don’t accept it and I don’t want to hurt you. You’re nice, I like you, but I’m not that girl.”

“I want you to be her.” I tell her truthfully. “I so, so want you to be her, Francesca. I cannot even explain how much I want to talk to her again. How much I want to tell her about all the days we never shared, to tell her that I thought of her at the end of every single one of them and that I prayed to God for years, every night, on my fucking knees, that she’d come back. I want to give her the Fruit Roll-Up I brought to school that first day back after summer vacation. That stupid Fruit Roll-Up that I still have hidden away, because I had this faith as a kid. This unwavering faith that only a kid can have that one day my friend would be back. And when she finally showed up, I’d give her that stupid snack to show her how much I missed her. And to prove myself to her. Because that little girl was my soulmate.”

She frowns so deep it makes me hold my breath.

“I’m sorry,” I say, turning my head to stare up at the sky. “I shouldn’t tell you this stuff, I’m sorry.” I’m projecting, that’s what I’m doing. I want Francesca to be my Fee so bad I’m starting to believe it myself, even as she sits here and tells me straight up she’s not her.

Her hand touches my cheek and I look back over.

“You can ask me one question, but it can’t be about my other life.”

I laugh. “What good does that do me?”

“Well, you can ask about things, but not my family, or school, or the places I’ve lived.”

“Give me a for example, because I’m not seeing the difference.”

She sighs and turns away, biting on her thumbnail a little. “OK,” she says, turning back. “For example, I’ll ask you the first question and you answer, then I’ll answer the same question for you.”

I smile.

She chews on her bottom lip this time. Clearly she is nervous. “All right, tell me about the best day of your life.”

I sit up and stare down at her. “The best day of my life?”

She nods.

“Today, Fee. The best day of my life is today.”

I’m thinking lately I get books too long or too short. This was long. Usually I gobble up the long ones. This was a solid good read. Yes it was pretty clean, I have also been reading too much smut. This was a change in that respect. What I admit is I miss the smut.

The overall joining of friends and the premise was great. Chloe and her friends doing a book club, each searching for something was enjoyable. The ideal star of the story is Chloe Kassidy and trying to find love. Her career is off kilter and so is the same for her love life. She is a photographer who is invited to an exclusive art exhibit entitled “Love Through Light”. This is something to put her on the “map” so to speak.

Her friends were a high point, as well as being shown at a prestigious gallery. The questions arise about love in both settings. Her inner circle is a burned and hurt girl, a married one and of course the single Mom. There are a few worthy scenes between the friends.

As for the disconnect, I sort of did not get Mary sending an email; “I dont know you but, you would be perfect for my boss” So here is an email chain between Christoph, a Swedish diplomat, also a writer, and Chloe. The relationship was missing something for me, and I don’t know exactly what. I really think some editing and additions of a love scene or two with  purpose would have set it apart.

Chloe Kassidy has just been accepted into one of Manhattan’s most exclusive art exhibits, Love Through Light. However, with her singular dedication to her career, she soon realizes that in sacrificing her personal life, she has never been in love. A hopeless romantic who is terrified of heartbreak, Chloe begins to enlist the help of her circle of friends to learn about love through their very different stories and experiences. In Chloe’s emotional rollercoaster to having the greatest love story ever told, she’ll learn that like her photography she must use the negatives in life to develop and prove that she’s a strong woman who found her way to love through light. Inspired by the notion that women grow up with ideas of true love and destiny, For Internal Use Only approaches those ideas with a decidedly twenty-first century viewpoint. A humorous love story with an edgy and dramatic twist, For Internal Use Only is a vastly entertaining novel that gives each of us a new fairy tale to look forward to: our own.

Laney Walker is a quick witted, athletic, southern tomboy who lets few get too close, using her sarcastic zingers to deflect. She also has no idea how others view her, Evan having protected and coveted her since they were children. But college puts a gap between Laney and Evan that neither of them were prepared for- old relationships are tested, new ones are formed and nothing will ever be the same.

Especially when in walks one Dane Kendrick, not at all the familiar, southern charmer of home, but an animal all his own.

More than, and not just, a love triangle; a story of growing up, friendship, loyalty, first love, primal love…and life.

This is the perfect book about a girl coming into her own and realizing there is more out there than she ever gave thought to. The characters were very well fleshed out and I was quick to build up a fondness for them. The story was sweet and at times tugged at my heart.

Thursday Morning Breakfast (and Murder) Club by Liz Stauffer @LizStauffer

Thursday Morning Breakfast (and Murder) Club by Liz Stauffer

Publisher: Sartoris Literary Group, Inc.

Release Date: July 5, 2013

Synopsis:

When Clare Ballard sports a new bruise on her right cheek the day after a contentious town meeting, the ladies of the Thursday Morning Breakfast Club suspect her husband Roger of abusing her. That same day Hester Franklin, another breakfast club lady, is called to rescue her grandson Patrick after he is arrested for transporting drugs. Proclaiming his innocence, Patrick threatens that those who set him up will pay. Roger Ballard is high on his list.

But it’s when Lillie Mae Harris, the club’s leader, discovers the body of the local drug dealer on the nearby hiking trail, that the community is upended. Roger Ballard, the primary suspect, goes missing, and when his body turns up in his own back yard, Clare Ballard confesses to his murder. No one believes she did it, but Clare insists she’s guilty and mysteriously refuses to talk to her lawyer, the police, or her family and friends.

The Thursday Morning Breakfast Club ladies believe she’s protecting someone, and they vow to find out who it is. Charlie Warren, the town’s homegrown policeman, using unconventional means, collaborates with the breakfast club ladies to draw out the real criminal. But danger lurks.

Alice Portman, the matriarch of the breakfast club, is struck down in her own yard and is sent to the hospital. Then others in the small community start to disappear—one after the other. As the ladies get closer to the truth, they get closer to the danger. With no time to cry over spilled coffee, they form a plan to capture the true culprits before someone else is murdered.

Meet the author:

Liz Stauffer wrote stories in high school, but transferred her writing skills to the corporate world after her divorce from an Air Force pilot, as a means of supporting her two young sons. Moving between educational research and the computer world, she wrote everything from political encyclopedias and travel articles, to marketing literature and software manuals. But it wasn’t until she found herself stranded in a South Dakota winter, that she returned to writing fiction.
After a successful corporate career, Liz gave up that world to travel and to write, and in some cases, to combine her two loves. Having lived in some fourteen states during her early adult years, she’s traveled to all fifty states, and to some fifty countries on four continents. When not traveling, she lives with her two dogs in Hollywood, Florida.
For several years after retiring, Liz lived six months a year in Pen Mar, Maryland, a small community nestled into the foothills of the Appalachians, straddling the Maryland/Pennsylvania border, her house just feet from the Appalachian Trail. Pen Mar, once the site of a grand summer resort built by the railroad in the late nineteenth century, is the inspiration for the site of her Thursday Morning Breakfast and Murder Club mysteries. Her protagonist, Lillie Mae Harris, shares some of her own interests. Both women love to talk, love their friends and family but also love to meet new people, love to be outside, and love to hike. Lillie Mae would bike as much as Liz does, if the country roads she cruises were supportive to biking. Liz also has a great love of the beach, which Lillie Mae finds hot and tedious.
Currently Liz is working on the third Thursday morning breakfast club mystery and is planning a grand epic that features the Pen Mar Park and Resort.
