I heard footsteps behind me and realized I’d failed to elude him.
“What are you doing?” Chase asked, his hands gripping the straps on his backpack.
“You know what I’m doing.”
He released one of his straps and slipped his hand into mine.
My eyes shot down to where his big hand was linked with mine. I clenched
my teeth. “Let go.”
He shook his head as I tried releasing my hand.
“So, it’s been you all along?” I said.
“What?”
“The one I need to be careful of.”
He scoffed, before leading me away from the elevator.
“What the hell are you doing?” I asked, trying to resist him but he was
too strong.
He said nothing.
My eyes shot around. There was no one around to help me if I screamed.
I’d seen enough movies to know you never go to a second location with your
kidnapper.
He moved us through the high shelves filled with old books until we were
in a deserted corner of the library.
My heartbeat thrashed as he backed me into a wall, my backpack softening
the hard wall behind me. His hands landed on the wall above me and he kept me
still with the weight of his body.
“You are the most infuriating girl I’ve ever met,” he said, his blue eyes
staring into mine.
As nervous as I felt, I wouldn’t let him see my fear. “Then let me go and
you never have to see me again.”
“Oh, I wish it were that simple.”
I swallowed around the lump that had shot to my throat.
“I can’t stop thinking about you, Soph.”
My eyes widened.
“And it’s driving me fucking crazy.”

He was a mountain; she could think of no other way to describe him.

His brown hair was cut in a perfect fade, wavy on top and extremely short on the sides, showing a little silver at the temples, which made it hard to pinpoint his age. Definitely over thirty, she’d guess.

His brow was strong and shadowed his eyes, but his shoulders took her breath away. They were so wide he couldn’t have fit through the car window if he tried.

His mouth was straight and stern, although his demeanor was friendly. It set off no alarm bells, and she completely trusted her instincts when it came to threats.

Her brain was weird like that. It existed in a state of calm, and the one time she’d been in a dangerous situation, it had jumped into action. It had analyzed the situation, calculating the best move to safety, resulting in her dragging a screaming Jenn away from the knife fight that had broken out in Jenn’s favorite club.

This last week of money problems had introduced her brain to a new state: stress. It could be the only rational explanation as to why the sight of this man had put her on edge. Not stress, exactly. Or any danger. More like a low hum of tension.

Twice, she’d had to keep her hands still when they’d wanted to tuck a stray hair behind her ear or adjust her glasses.

And now he was speaking, and she had no idea what he just said.

“I’m sorry—what was that?” she asked, covering her embarrassment with a brisk tone.

He held his very large palm out, hovering it over her door, and said, “I’m going to need Trevor’s card back first.”

“Oh. Of course.” She dug into her raincoat pocket and pulled out the metal card, placing it in his hand. His fingers closed over it, hiding it completely from view. “How did you know I had it? Does it have a sensor in it?”

“I think I can help with your request,” he said, ignoring her question. “But I have to advise you that you’re on private property, and that covers all information you learn or hear. This is a type of verbal NDA. Can I get your agreement on that?”

Her pulse skipped at the words “I can help,” her imagination running away with all the ways he could help her get an escort job. She conjured her grandmother’s face telling her to Prekrati eto, or knock it off. It worked.

“I understand and I agree,” she said. She looked to the house, a Spanish-style mansion, and back to the man, wondering what would happen next.

ESSENCE OF FEAR by Bethany-Kris @BethanyKris @IndieSagePR

ESSENCE OF FEAR

by Bethany-Kris
A Boykov Bratva Novel
Publication Date: June 22, 2020
Genres: Adult, Romantic Suspense, Organized Crime. Erotic Romance, Standalone

The allure of fear is learning to love it.

Viktoria Boykov has heard it all—cold they call her. The spoiled bratva princess. She knows very well what people say when her back is turned. She doesn’t mind; let them talk. It’s better for people to assume what they want about her than for them to know the truth … until him.

Pavel Kotov knows what people say—death they call him. The Boykov dog. He’s heard all the whispers locked away in the cells of the Compound. As the reaper for the bratva, his life owned by someone else, he knows what they say doesn’t matter. His life has never mattered … until her.

He’s terrifying.

She’s terrified.

Viktoria only wants to keep running from her past. Pavel doesn’t have a life to run from. Freedom is the one thing they both crave—for entirely different reasons. But this life is vicious, and scars like the ones they wear will never fade.

Together, they could have everything.

Or are they just pawns to a bigger game?

*

Note: Essence of Fear is a Boykov Bratva standalone.

“What is the card for?” she asked.

Pav hummed under his breath and eyed her from the side. “A party to celebrate something beautiful.”

“So, you really do need a generic card?”

“I suppose.”

It took her all of three seconds to find a generic card with the usual congratulations stamped on the front, and the usual platitudes on the inside. She grabbed the matching envelop, and handed it over to Pav, too. He took them with the same smile as before.

“There you are.”

She turned to walk away, but it was his hand quickly curving around her wrist that stopped her. She froze all over, and a small tremor worked its way through her sinew. Air sucked fast and sharp into her lungs.

At the same time, she enjoyed the warmth of his palm against his skin. She liked the way his fingers tightened against her skin, and the pressure of his fingertips pressing into her racing pulse point. There was no way to hide the way his touch both terrified her and confused her.

Excited her.

Viktoria looked back at Pav but said nothing.

He quirked a brow. “I was going to say thank you.”

She nodded. “You don’t have to.”

Now, let me go.

The words came out in her mind, but not out of her mouth. She wanted to say them, and she didn’t want to say them at the same time.

How strange …

Da. I was going to say it, but now I want to say something else.”

Viktoria wet her bottom lip, muttering, “So, say whatever it is, then.”

“You’re still scared of me?”

She blinked.

Her mouth worked, though.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Seared (Cooking Up A Celebrity Book 1) by Hadley Harlin @hadleyharlin #review

Are you all as down as I am? I needed something to make me laugh a little more than 90 day Fiance.  I met the author online, as I do a lot and I gave this series a try.  The begining is set up for the series with a cutesy Clara. She is lacking confidence, naive and talented in the kitchen. Stepping into the unknown she applies for a cooking show. I used to watch a lot of Cooking Channel so picturing that she was competing for her own show by entering was easy to imagine. She tells herself she is good and tries really hard. You all know I am an Italian American born and raised in Brooklyn, that qualifies me to understand her mother. I too am very traditional and would break some legs if any of my kids didnt follow my sort of strict rules. First comes love and then life. We don’t believe in out of wedlock kids, living together and shared bank accounts before marriage. Don’t like it, too bad! I know that women having career paths isnt a favorite either, but off to Paris we go.

This is a sexy, fun and enjoyable read! Parts are a little little cliche, but that’s necessary to get you to love Clara. The rivals did keep me amused. This a great and I will finish the series on the beach as summer in So-Cal heats up and the beaches are finally going to open. Seared is quiete sizzling so grab it and enough. You are welcome!

A doe-eyed virgin, a smoking hot rival, and a global cooking competition with millions of viewers. What could possibly go wrong?

My overprotective Italian mother would drown me in holy water if she knew I applied to an international cooking show—or how dirty my mind truly is.

Now, I’m Paris bound as one of eight contestants.

I know I’m one of the best new chefs and soon the world will know it, too.

The only thing standing in my way is a tall, growly, bad boy chef with more tattoos than skin.

He’s brilliant in the kitchen and so smoking hot I’d probably need a pair of oven mitts to touch him.

Not that I’d want to. The last thing I need right now is a distraction.

But he’s currently looming in my hotel room with a proposal.

My knowledge of Italian cuisine in exchange for his German sausage.

Sweet Mary, Mother of God, that’s a lot of sausage.

Seared is a sizzling romantic comedy featuring a slow-burn romance between two rivals trying to balance their powerful desire for each other with their intense will to win. HEA and no cheating, it’s a full-length, stand-alone novel that’s perfect for those who love fine food, celebrity chefs, reality TV, and sweet and sexy romance books!

About ELLE GRECO

Urban Fantasy lovers will know me as Karen Greco, author of the best selling Hell’s Belle series. My Contemporary Romance books are written under Elle Greco.

While the genres are worlds apart, strong female characters are the chain that links all my worlds.

These women are magical. They wield wicked weapons. They play a mean drum solo. They fall in love. They rule the boardroom and the bedroom.

Whatever they do, they do it with swagger.

I love escaping into their badass worlds. I hope you do, too.

I’ve been writing for a while–starting with short stories and short plays as a child, graduating to terrible poetry and longer plays as a teenager. I studied playwright in college but my career took a detour and I ended up doing journalism and then entertainment publicity. A few years ago, I decided to pursue my original passion and a few full-length novels later, here we are!

I love anything spooky and impossible to explain. If you love hanging out in cemeteries, the older the better, I’d totally go on a road trip with you.

I have two rescue dogs, a patient husband, and an awesome kid.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Sassy Blonde:

From USA Today bestselling author Stacey Kennedy comes a steamy contemporary romance featuring a brooding hero with too much baggage, a spirited heroine who is always up for adventure, and a sexy-as-hell road trip that will change their lives forever.

Maisie Carter has always been a free spirit. An artist by nature, she has no idea what she’s doing as co-owner of Three Chicks Brewery. But she’s determined to prove to her older sisters that she can be an asset to their grandfather’s beer legacy. The best way to do that? Make the rounds at Colorado’s craft brewery festivals and turn Foxy Diva, their top beer, into an award winner. Unfortunately, after more than one “beer mishap,” it becomes clear that she’s going to need some help.

Hayes Taylor knows he has a chip on his shoulder, but he has no interest in working through his traumatic past. He just wants to work on his horse farm, alone. The last thing he needs in his life is a woman, especially his dead wife’s best friend, the sweet-as-pie Maisie Carter. But she’s always brought out his protective instincts, and he can hardly say ‘no’ when she asks for his help…

Exclusive Excerpt:

“You’re fired.”

Maisie balked at Clara, trying to ignore the dinging alarm coming from the hospital room across the hallway. She’d been in the hospital for six terribly long hours now. After she’d been knocked out, and an orthopedic surgeon realigned the fracture fragments, they’d given her a horribly ugly splint. While that all sucked, the worst part was that she had hurt her dominant hand. No painting. No drawing. No creating. For…weeks? That was bad. But this? “You can’t fire me,” she implored.

“You and Amelia gave me full control of running the business, so I obviously can,” Clara said, placing her hands on her hips. “Even before your accident, I seriously doubted you could do this. Now? Maisie, let’s be real here, you can’t handle the festivals.”

Defeat sank in, and even Maisie doubted herself, but yet, she still asked, “Who says I can’t?”

Clara waved at the saline bag attached to Maisie’s hand and then pointed at Maisie’s broken finger. “I’d say today is evidence enough this isn’t working out.” Her sister’s expression softened, and she took Maisie’s uninjured hand and squeezed tight. “I know you wanted to do something more for the brewery than the logos and signage, and you tried. We’re proud of you.”

Amelia nodded and gave a soft smile. “So proud.”

Clara added, “But you’ve been struggling at this before you even hit the ground running. We’ll just have to find you something else to do within the company.”

But there wasn’t anything else for Maisie to do, and they all knew it. Clara was the brains of the operation. Amelia was creator of the beer. Even, Penelope, their cousin, had taken over the brewery tours since Maisie, well…sucked at that too. Maisie was the painter, the dreamer, the woman trying desperately to fit into the box that she didn’t fit in. “Okay, I know having the keg fall on my hand wasn’t my finest moment,” she hedged, “but I can fix this.”

Clara’s brows rose. “How?”

“I’ll figure that out soon,” Maisie said with a smile.

Clara frowned. “That sugary sweet smile has gotten you many, many chances, but I’m afraid you’re out of them.”

No! No. This couldn’t happen. Clara and Amelia had been fulfilling their end of their bargain. Maisie may have broken her finger, but she was determined to do the same. To help fulfill Pops’s final wish. “Just give me one more try,” she pleaded. “Please.”

Obviously taking pity on Maisie, Amelia cut in, nudging Clara’s arm. “It’s not going to hurt anyone to give her one more chance.”

A muscle near Clara’s eye twitched. Like, maybe a few of those gray hairs she dyed lately were because of Maisie. She finally huffed, then said to Maisie, “I don’t even pretend to know how you’ll pull this off, but fine, one more chance. That’s it, though, Maisie. Our reputation is riding on these festivals.”

“Got it,” Maisie said with a firm nod.

Clara loosed another breath and stepped closer to the bed to drop a kiss on Maisie’s forehead. “I’m sorry about your finger.”

Clara wasn’t all tough. She had an incredibly soft heart. It was just that her heart had thorns around it, ready to hurt, if need be. Maisie couldn’t blame her. Clara had Mason to think of, and being a single mom was a big weight. The brewery had to succeed.

“Thanks,” Maisie said, studying her finger in the splint. “It actually doesn’t even hurt anymore.” She smiled at her sisters. “But maybe that’s the morphine talking.”

Amelia chuckled, her eyes twinkling. “Probably, but since you are feeling better, how about I go see about getting you out of here?”

“Lord, yes, please.” Maisie had been stuffed into a semi-private room, the blue curtain separating her and the next bed. She didn’t want to be there when that next person came in.

Clara grabbed her purse off the seat. “I need to pick up Mason from the sitter. She’s probably wondering where I am.” When Clara reached the curtain, she turned back. “You’re really okay?”

Maisie nodded. “The only thing hurting right now is my ego.”

Clara’s brow wrinkled, obviously disbelieving. “Okay, call me if you need me. I’ll stop off at the pharmacy and pick up your painkiller prescription”

Maisie often felt bad for Clara. The burden of responsibility always rested on her shoulders. Maisie couldn’t remember the last time Clara ever did anything for herself. “Thanks. Love you.” She forced a smile, giving her sisters a quick wave before they shut the curtain closed behind them.

The moment they were gone, tears pricked Maisie’s eyelids. One more chance, and then what? Before she broke her finger, she had doubts she could pull off the beer festivals without epically screwing up. Now? Even she knew the finish line was near impossible to reach. She couldn’t even move a damn keg without it falling on her.

This was beginning to feel like a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from. Being a disappointment to her sisters was normal. She’d always been Maisie, the baby who always got caught sneaking out and never followed the rules. But disappointing her grandfather, not seeing his final wish for the girls he’d raised come true, was harder to stomach. She slowly breathed through the pain, knowing one thing for certain—she could not fail.

Voices stirred next to her as nurses rolled a bed in. A moment later, a high feminine voice snapped, “Sir, you need to stay in your bed.”

“I’m fine. If you’d just let me go, I’d show you.”

There was a muffled creak as the person adjusted in the bed before the nurse practically growled, “I’m going to sedate you if you don’t stay put.”

Maisie fought her laughter at that low baritone voice. Only one man would cause someone so much grief. She slid off the bed, grabbed the curtain, and whisked it open. First, she met the nurse’s scowl. Then she met Hayes’s whiskey-colored eyes. He practically filled the hospital bed with six-foot-two feet of pure, hardworking muscle. And just the sight of him warmed Maisie’s belly.

That was a problem lately. Hayes had always been Laurel’s guy. Then Hayes had become a friend. But over the last few months, something had shifted between them, and Maisie still couldn’t figure out why her heart suddenly wanted him. But there was no denying the draw there, the want, the need. She’d tried to fight her growing attraction, feeling horribly guilty, but there was no point. Her heart demanded Hayes. While she knew Laurel would want them to be happy, Hayes hadn’t acted on the attraction, and neither had Maisie. Yet. To keep things light, she joked, “Aw, you felt so bad I was in here, you wanted to join me.”

Hayes’s mouth twitched, his eyes warming when they met hers. “Didn’t want you feeling left out,” he said.

A snort came from the doorway. Maisie glanced up, catching Beckett’s bemused expression. “I told him to wear armor. He didn’t listen.”

Maisie smiled at Beckett, but her smile fell when she glanced at Hayes. “What happened?”

Hayes looked more than annoyed, his eye twitching. “After your sisters brought you here, I went back to the farm. I had little a disagreement with a horse.”

“No,” the nurse said. “He fell off a horse, and that’s why he needs to stay in this bed.”

Maisie gave Hayes a totally fake chastising look. “You’re not being a terrible patient, are you?”

Hayes set his jaw. “I don’t want to be a patient at all.”

The nurse frowned at him. “You might have a concussion. The doctor wants you to stay overnight, just to be safe.”

“Yeah, that’s not happening.” Hayes sat up, his large frame filling up the small space. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, sand falling off his cowboy boots.

Maisie took in the dirt covering his worn blue jeans and black T-shirt, realizing he most definitely did have a fall.

When he went to stand, she grabbed him by the arm with her uninjured hand, desperately aware of the muscles stretching and flexing beneath her fingers. “Don’t be stupid.” She pressed her hand to his chest and he willingly let her push him back on the bed. When the warmth of his eyes returned to hers, time stopped. She became instantly lost, trapped by the intensity she saw on his face. He slowly wrapped his fingers around her wrist, and maybe because it was the anniversary of Laurel’s death, or something else altogether, but she remembered the last time his fingers wrapped around her wrist.

“Maisie. Go home.”

Maisie stood in the dark bedroom in the empty house. She had no idea how bad Hayes’s depression had gotten, when she’d been so deep in her own. Then Beckett called and begged her to help. Now, here, with Hayes, she couldn’t believe her eyes, and yet, she understood, having been so lost herself.

The beautiful, expensive property that Hayes bought when he moved back to River Rock had been gorgeous when she’d come for the spreading of Laurel’s ashes on the weeping willow hanging over the creek. Now, without him mowing the lawn or tending to the property, everything was overgrown. The three-bedroom house had no furniture. Hayes slept on a camping mat on the floor, the curtains on the windows were drawn. The darkness of the place was near stifling.

She’d been right where he was. Until her sisters’ love brought her back to life.

Determined to get Hayes there too, she moved to the curtains and whisked them open, letting the sunlight spill inside. She turned back, finding Hayes lying curled on his side, looking thin, his hair long, his beard far past scruffy. “You’re getting up,” she told him. “We’re going outside.”

When he didn’t move, she dropped to her knees next to him. He rolled onto his back and she placed her hand on his chest. “Laurel would be devastated if she saw you like this. You’re going to get up and face each day, with me here, until we both have some kind of life worth living.”

Tears welled in his eyes. His fingers wrapped around her wrist tight. “I’ve got nothing left.”

“That’s not true,” she said, hearing the raw emotion in her voice. “You’ve got me.” She grabbed the blanket and yanked it off, paying no attention to the fact that he was naked. She tossed him the jeans that rested in a heap on the floor next to him. “Get dressed. I’m making you breakfast.”

Maisie blinked away the memory of the day Hayes had become her friend, instead of just Laurel’s husband. They’d come through dark times together, and they had history together. So much history. Some good. Some bad. Some unimaginably painful. But this new thing that had sprung out of nowhere over the last few months made her cheeks hot, and she averted his gaze. What was once friendly between them had become taut with tension that seemed to get tighter every day. This man staring at her wasn’t broken anymore. Hunger lived in his eyes. “You need to stay here,” she told him. “Let them look you over.”

“I’m fine,” he said, his voice lower than before.

Not wanting to, but knowing she had to, she slowly took her hand off his chest, watching her fingers drag against the hard muscles, feeling like touching him wasn’t all that friendly anymore. “I’ve been here all day,” she pointed out. “You can endure getting looked over.”

He held her stare. “Fine, I’ll get looked over. But there”—he glared at the nurse—“is no way in hell I’m staying the night.”

The nurse turned away, but even Maisie saw her roll her eyes as she left the room.

Beckett laughed.

Maisie nudged Hayes’s shoulder. “Be nice. You’re really annoying her.”

Hayes snorted, lying his head back against the pillow, staring up at the ceiling, that muscle in his jaw twitching again. “Believe me, the feeling is mutual.”

Blurb
Kiss the Blarney Stone, Hope Dunn is going to
need some good ole fashion Irish luck! In the chaos of tax season the
Arizona accountant is pulled away to stand in her cousin’s wedding. All it
takes is one step back in the Big Apple, and she regrets making the trip. True
to character, her mother uses their time together to hound Hope about getting
married and settling down.

Still, Hope fulfills
her bridesmaid obligations by joining the bridal party for a shamrock wearing,
pint chugging St. Paddy’s day blow out. There she runs into best
man—and smokin’ hot ginger—Kellan Townsend. Far too much green beer later,
she finds out exactly what that fine Irish lad keeps under his kilt.

Afterwards, Hope
wants nothing more than to walk of shame her way into a dark room and nurse her
hangover. Unfortunately, wedding demands won’t allow it. As if facing Kellan
isn’t awkward enough, her mother picks that moment to launch into a fresh
guilt-trip over her lack of grandbabies. Like a lucky little Leprechaun, Kellan
cuts in with a magical offer.

A pretend romance to
get her mother off her back seems like a wish granted. But Kellan has an agenda
all his own. Can he use this opportunity to jig his way straight into Hope’s
heart? Or will he need a four-leaf clover to get past this workaholic’s
defenses?

Kellan nods toward the bar. “Ready?” He holds out his arm
and it’s as if my body moves of its own accord. I take it and he leads me to
the bar. “Let me guess, green beer?”
“Please,” I scoff, waving him off, “it’s St. Patrick’s Day.
I want a true Irish-inspired drink.”
The bartender walks over to us. “What’ll it be you two?”
Kellan looks to me. “Ladies first.”
“I’ll take an Irish Eyes,” I say. The bartender nods and
smiles and then turns to Kellan.
Kellan laughs at me. “Irish whiskey, huh? I think I’ll do
the same.” The bartender pours the whiskey in a glass and mixes it with a
little cream and green crème de menthe. Kellan holds up his glass and looks in my
eyes. “It actually matches your eyes. But you’re not Irish.”
I shake my head. “Nope. Got a lot of German in me though.”
Kellan takes a sip of his drink. “Don’t know why this is
called Irish Eyes. The most common eye color among Irish is blue.”
Holding up my glass, I clank it against his. “Just like
yours.”
His blue eyes twinkle and I avert my gaze to my drink. The
way he looks at me makes things stir inside of me and I really don’t need my
insides to be stirred right now, or even think of it for that matter. I should
probably stop drinking.
“So, tell me,” Kellan calls out, “how long are you in town
for?”
I take a sip of my drink, it’s loaded with Irish whiskey.
“Only till the wedding,” I respond, meeting his gaze again. “After that, I have
to get back.”
His lips pull back slightly in that sexy grin of his. “So,
not long then. Hate to hear it.” I’m starting to hate it too. Shaking my head,
I try to drive all indecent thoughts out of my mind, but all I can think about
is hearing his voice in the dark, whispering in my ear as he touches me. I push
the drink aside and Kellan laughs. “Too much for you?”
I rub a hand over my face. The room feels hot, but that’s
probably because I’m tipsy and he’s making me want things I shouldn’t.
“Actually, I was a little drunk to begin with. I think I need some air.”
Kellan takes my hand. “Come on. There’s a private area out
back we can sit. I’ll grab you a bottle of water and we can go out there.”
He asks the bartender for a water and hands it to me. We
walk out of the private room into the hallway and I guzzle the water as we head
toward the door. When Kellan opens it, it leads out onto a balcony that
overlooks the river. There are people everywhere and I can hear their
chattering, but the cool air feels good on my skin.
“Better?” Kellan asks.
I nod. “Much. I just needed some fresh air.” There are two
wrought iron chairs and he guides me into one.
“How much have you had to drink today?”
Groaning, I close my eyes. “Well … I was forced into taking
Jell-O shots in the limo. To be honest, I’m not a huge drinker. Doesn’t take
much to get me drunk.” Kellan laughs and it makes me smile. That’s one of the
things I never forgot about him … the way he laughs.
“What are you smiling about?” he asks, laughing again.
I turn to face him. “Your laugh. I remember it from a long
time ago. You were always so fun to be around. I always thought you’d end up
with Hannah one day.”
Smiling, he shakes his head. “No. I always had my eye on
someone else. Didn’t work out though.”
“You mean Bridget?” I ask.
“Fuck no,” he blurts out. “That was over a long time ago.”
His smile fades and I can see a flash of pain in those blue
eyes of his. “What happened?”
Sighing, he looks off into the distance. “She did me wrong.
Never thought I’d get hurt, but I did. After she left me for someone else, I
just didn’t give a shit anymore.”
“Is that when you started growing a beard? In the pictures
Hannah and Hallie sent over the years, I thought you were a homeless man.”
That’s not exactly true. He’s always been good looking, but I really did hate
the long, scraggly beard. Now, he looks sexy with just the stubble.
Kellan chuckles hard. “You thought I looked homeless? That’s
messed up, Hope.”
I shrug. “Hey, you don’t look it now.” I glance down at his
green get up. “Right now, you look like a leprechaun.”
He peers down at my green tutu. “And you look like a silly
fairy.” But then he looks up at me and winks. “A cute one, by the way.” We
watch the people walk by on the street and they’re all having such a grand ole
time. It’s easy to get lost in the appeal. Feels like it’s been forever since
I’ve let loose and had fun.
Kellan leans back in his chair. “So, tell me about yourself.
What’s changed since the last time I saw you?”
I shrug. “Not much. Got older and left town.”
His brows lift curiously. “Dating anyone?”
“No,” I reply, shaking my head. “I was seeing someone a few
months ago, but it didn’t work out. We really didn’t have anything in common.
He was all into trail riding on his bike and I just couldn’t get into it. I
tried once and broke my wrist.”
Kellan snorts. “And did he wear that girly looking spandex
shit?”
The thought makes me smile. “Yep, but he wasn’t very
masculine to begin with. Maybe that’s why I really wasn’t attracted to him. Not
that I need a man to protect me, but it’d be nice to have someone who could
defend my honor if need be.” I roll my eyes. “Okay, I must really be drunk to
say crap like that.”
He smirks. “I get it. A woman should feel protected when
she’s with her man.”
The door opens and Stewart steps out. “There you both are,”
he says, looking concerned.
Kellan stands and I do the same. “Is everything okay?”
Stewart sighs. “I think Hallie’s had too much to drink.
She’s sick so we’re going to head back to the house. The limo should be here in
five minutes.”
I nod. “We’ll be there.”
Usually, I’d want the night to end, but I don’t want it to
now. Plus, I don’t want to go home. My mother will still be awake and all too
ready to finish her conversation about how I need to get busy with my life and
find a husband. And if I don’t, she’ll handle it for me. My goal was to not go
home until I knew she was asleep.
“What’s wrong?” Kellan asks.
With a heavy sigh, I meet his gaze. “I don’t want to go home
just yet.”
He shrugs. “Then don’t. You can come with me and I’ll take
you home later.”
The thought tempts me, but I don’t know if it’s a good idea
or not. I trust Kellan not to do anything stupid, but the problem is me. I’m
the one I need to worry about.
“Are you sure?” I ask, second guessing myself, but then he
opens his lips and talks to me in that sexy Irish brogue.
“Come on, lassie. It’ll be fine.”
How can I say no to that?
