Finn steps farther up
to me so that our bodies are now touching. He’s so close that I have
to look up at him. “It’s just one dance, Lo.” 
I look
toward the dance floor and pull the corner of my bottom lip between my
teeth, contemplating my answer. I’ve never been able to resist
Finn Reynolds—why start now? I can hear his voice in my head all the
times he said, “C’mon, Lo, just one more…” One more smile,
one more minute, one more kiss, one more orgasm. What’s one dance?  
I down the
rest of the champagne and place the glass back on the bar. I know that my
cheeks are flushed—I could easily blame that on the alcohol and not
at the idea that I’m about to be in Finn’s arms once again. I turn to
face him, holding one finger up. “One dance.”  
His smile
widens, knowing that he won. Don’t fall for it, Lauren. That
smile still seems to make me weak in the knees, and I hate it. ”One dance,
I promise.”  
He extends
his hand in my direction. I glance down first as if it were a snake ready
to strike. He tries to set me at ease, confirming it’s just
one dance. I place my hand in his, and my body comes alive. I never had my

over to an opening on the dance floor before spinning me and pulling me to
his chest.  
“Show-off,” I
mutter under my breath but loud enough for him to hear me. His deep chuckle
vibrates my body with his closeness. I tuck my head into the crook of his neck
and close my eyes as he holds me, just like he did for all
of those dances in high school I dragged him to.  
He holds me
tighter as “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers continues to
play, and I let him. In fact, I cling to him the same way I
did at the airport, clutching to him as if he were my lifeline. 
Time stops.
We are no longer in a church hall full of a hundred and some guests,
but it’s just Finn and me. I don’t care who’s watching us,
questions be damned later, as being in his arms just once is worth everything.
But is it enough? 
The
irony isn’t lost on me as I listen to the lyrics. I squeeze my eyes
tighter to keep the tears at bay. Nothing compares to the feeling of being in
Finn’s arms. 
“Lo.” The
way he breathes my name fills me with life. His head is resting
against the top of mine. I slowly lift my head meeting his
gaze. Is he going to kiss me? Do I want him to? I swallow
thickly as he closes the distance between us, and I close my eyes. I
can feel his breath on my skin. His nose brushes against mine, and my
heart is ready to jump out of my chest.  
“Lo, I lied. What if I want more than one dance?” His voice just above a
whisper, but it screams to my heart. “I miss you.” 
My breath catches, and my eyes fly open. I feel as though the room is beginning to
close. I can’t do this, especially today of all days. I slowly back
away from him, needing the distance now more than ever. My bottom lip
quivers, but I refuse to let him see me break. 
“I’m
sorry, I can’t do this.”  
He takes a step toward me, and I keep pacing backward. “Lo,
please.”  
No. There’s that
word again, the one that broke us the first time.  
It was
only supposed to be one dance. He promised—another broken promise. Finn
Reynolds seems to be full of them.
I need to escape. I spin on my heels, leaving a trail of smoke in my path and Finn alone on the dance floor. I should’ve know…because all those “one mores” always turned into several more.

Chloe didn’t realize her hand was raised in his or that his other hand rested on her back until a dancing couple bumped her closer to him.

 

Chloe held on to his arm for balance. He wanted to dance with her. “But I don’t know this one.”

 

Tristan leaned in near her ear. “I’ll teach you. Trust me. It’s not complicated.”

 

Not complicated? Every cell of her being was awakened by his proximity and his familiar scent warming on his skin. She’d probably make a fool of herself. “Okay. I’ll try.”

 

He moved back a little. “It’s just a simple two-step. When I step forward with my left foot, you step back with your right. Then it’s quick-quick, slow-slow. Quick-quick, slow-slow. I’ll guide you through it.”

Increasing her pace, a chill worked its way through Evie’s limbs. The sun
was almost finished setting, and that meant it would be dark soon. Evie hated
the dark. She was automatically at a disadvantage with Troy in the dark.
Another disadvantage she should say. He could still see, she was blind. It was
an extra layer of protection for him, like he needed that.

Luca had offered Evie a ride, but she’d declined, hoping the fresh air
would clear her mind. As the echoes of her steps filled the air, she started to
regret her decision. At this very moment, she could be sitting next to him in
his warm car, breathing in his musky scent.

Evie could almost hear his deep voice in the back of her mind. Feel the
vibration of his words. A smile touched Evie’s lips at the thought.

No. What was she doing?

Shaking her head, Evie pushed down the feelings. Feelings were dangerous.
They were the reason she was where she was in her life at the moment. Luca was
dangerous to her. She had to keep her distance, no matter how much her body

so I have to keep climbing the steps. “I like the way you road-trip.”
“What?” I’m so confused.
He’s still climbing the steps and now my back is against my front door.
“I like the way you wear that glitter shit on your eyelids in the summer. And
the way you wear fingerless gloves in the winter even though you complain,
every single day, that your fucking hands are cold. I like the way your hair
smells when you show up for work and it’s still wet. I like the way you spin on
your stupid stool in front of the shop cash register and glare at the giggly
sorority girls like you can’t wait for them to wake up sober tomorrow and
realize they just paid a hundred bucks for a My Little Mermaid tramp stamp. I
like the way you bite your lip when you’re tattooing and the way you always
have a smear of ink on the side of your face by the time you’re done.”
I reach up to touch my face.
“Yes, you have ink there, right now. And I love that. Because you don’t
even care enough to check the mirror after you’re done with a client to notice
that you always have ink smeared on your fucking face after you tattoo
someone. I like the way you kick at stones when you walk down the street like
you’re some troubled teen with pregnancy issues.”
“What?” I laugh.
“I like the way you bitch, and moan, and complain that no one takes you
seriously. In fact, I love that no one takes you seriously, because then
they’d figure out just how awesome you are, and I’m afraid you’ll actually find
someone else before I can convince you that I am good for you. I want to
date you, Belinda Baker. And you know what really pissed me off
tonight?”
He pauses.
I become uneasy. “Am I supposed to guess?”
“I’m not mad that you fucked Tony in the alley. OK? That’s not it. I’m
angry that you gave him the chance that I deserve.”
My stomach… falls. I don’t know of any other way to describe the
feeling I get when I internalize those last few words of his. Except… falling.
Like the world has just been yanked out from under me. Like I’m adrift in a sea
of mistakes.
Because he’s absolutely right.
“Vann—”
“No,” he says, still seething. “No.” He holds up one finger. “I’m not
done. You don’t get to talk yet. I’ve been holding this in all fucking night
while you laughed and joked with my goddamned brother and his stupid yoked-out
army friend. Who, by the way, was leering at you the entire time.”
“He was not!”
“He so was!”
“He was lying face down, Vann!
”
“I just want to say this.” He pauses again and his chest is rising and
falling very quickly, like he’s really upset. And his lips are falling into a
deep frown. And his face is becoming flushed with heat. “I have earned my chance, Belinda. I didn’t
become your friend because I wanted to get in your pants. I didn’t get you the
apprentice job because I thought we’d be good together. I didn’t drive you and
Tara two thousand miles to Key West because I thought maybe you’d finally see
me for what I am. I did all those things because I like you. With no expectations whatsoever. I did all those things
because I enjoy you. And when we’re together, life is fun. Even when we’re
running from guys called Diablo, and smuggling people on boats, and especially
when we’re just hanging out doing nothing. Saying nothing. That’s my favorite
time with you. Because we’re at that place now. That place where we’re
comfortable. And I keep waiting for you to see how good we are. And you
just”—he shakes his head—“refuse! You just refuse to even consider me. But this
asshole Tony Dumas shows up out of nowhere and you give him all the
considerations. You say you don’t like him—”
“I don’t!”
“You say that, but then why, Belinda? Why do you give him all the chances
he hasn’t earned?”
