Shattered Soul by Jennifer Snyder @JennSnyder04 @cbl_blog

Shattered Soul

Synopsis:

Hellish Nightmare…

If seventeen-year-old Seth Bradson were to describe his life in two words, those would be the two he’d choose. Seth prefers to cope with his crappy existence by spending his days in a drug-induced haze. But when Ali Carson steps into his life, Seth finds something he’s subconsciously been seeking—a new drug, one that consumes his mind unlike any other.

Love.

In a moment of unforgivable weakness, Seth allows Ali to try crystal meth, his most addictive temptation. This single event begins the unraveling of both their lives and forces Seth to learn the definition of regret the hard way.

EXCERPT:

I woke freezing, my teeth chattering.

I tried to sit up, but my head was pounding so hard, it made me nauseous.

“Lay back,” a soft voice murmured, gentle hands pressing down on my bare shoulders. “Be at ease. You are safe now, Synn Primus.”

I shook my head, falling back onto the soft pillows. My back felt like fire where the pillows touched it. “Not—” It was so hard to speak. My tongue felt thick. “Not my name.”

“Yes it is, you goose.” Something was draped over me.

I let out a startled yell and threw it off. Everywhere it touched burned.

It was draped over me again. This time the hands pressed it down on my shoulders, keeping it in place. “You have been Marked by the House of Wands, so you now bear our name. You are a Primus, Synn. Welcome.”

My whole world stopped as my mind caught up.

I’d lost my father. He was—

I closed my eyes and fell back.

Dead.

I’d watched so many others burned to death, their children made to look on as those they loved were lost.

And now? I’d lost my life to the Hands?

No. I shook my head and rose. No. “No. This can’t be.”

She pushed me back. “How else do you explain it?” A warm thumb ran over my brow. “You survived the fire, Synn.” She pulled the blanket away, a cool finger running over where I burned. “And how do you explain this? This is your Mark, Synn, the thing you have been waiting for your entire life.”

I remained quiet, concentrating on breathing.

“What I witnessed was a Marking. Aren’t you the least bit excited?”

My father’s strong, rigid face swam before my eyes, so fierce and powerful as the fire rose to claim him, writhing with the pain of it. A sob seeped from my chest. “Not like this.”

I was gathered in her arms. She held me close as she rocked me. She crooned a song I’d never heard. I wasn’t paying attention. I was overwhelmed with what I had lost; my family, my home, my self.

The pounding in my head lessened as the woman held me close, easing my pain. Visuals started registering. The red silk of the cover. The black leather of her bodice. Her long, dark hair.

“Nix.” My voice was a bare croak.

She pulled away slightly, staring into my face. She’d removed the odd crown with the spinning birds.

I didn’t have the energy to fight her. My eyes fell closed in a long blink. I opened them, even though I didn’t want to, my gaze falling to the ruby spider resting on her chest.

“Do not fear, young Primus,” she said, her full lips curved in a careful smile. “I am your family now. You will want for nothing.”

I rocked where I sat, my legs sprawled. “Why?” I barely had the energy to whisper. “Why?”

“Why what, Primus?”

“Why did you attack us?”

“You attacked first.”

“I went for a sword to save—” I paused, breathing, blinking back the tears. “—innocent lives. You killed them for no reason.”

“They would not submit.”

I stared at her in exhausted incredulity. “Did you give them the chance?”

She cupped my face and peered at me sincerely. “I do not want empty devotion. I want only to be loved and cherished.”

“And so you scare children into fearing you.”

“Fear can turn to love.” Her smile was sweet. “You will see.”

“No.”

She flinched and pulled back. “Do you want to see?” She didn’t give me a chance to say no or yes. She pulled away the cover, her eyes dropping to my chest. “Your Mark, Primus.” She reached out with her diamond claw.

I stared in wonder. Rivers of fire coursed in a fine web of lines and runes under my skin. I twisted to see my back, but failed.

“It’s the same there. Have you ever seen so powerful a Mark as this?”

I shook my head. No. I hadn’t. I touched the lines with a ginger hand. They were sensitive and hot to the touch, leaving the rest of me chilled to the core.

Her fingertips joined mine, her long nails gleaming red in the soft yellow light. “But what can one expect from the house of El’Asim and Ino?”

I jerked, staring at her in surprise.

She threw her head back and laughed. “But of course. Why didn’t I see this before? The two most power Families allying themselves through marriage. Oh, yes.” Her eyes were filled with greed, her teeth bared in a smile that was more of a sneer.

She looked ready to eat me.

“Do you have brothers? Sisters? Any who are younger than you, unmarked?”

I stared at her in disgust and wonder. “No.”

Her pink tongue ran along her teeth as she dropped her chin and peered at me through her long, thick lashes. “It doesn’t matter. You are mine.”

I straightened my back and stared at her, gritting my teeth with all the will I had left. “Never.”

A smile slithered into place along her lips. “We shall see.” She pulled away and gestured, sashaying to a door I hadn’t noticed before.

Something heavy slammed against my head.

I fought to remain conscious. But lost.

Fire & Ice by Genevieve Jourdin @genjourdin @LiteraryQuill

Because there are two sides to every story…

Justine’s story is told in Just Add Heat, and the mirror to the story, Baby, It’s Cold Outside, is told from Carter’s point of view.

Just Add Heat–Take one part slightly insecure woman and add one part confidently sexy man. Mix well. Pour out the memories of the past two years and what do you have? A recipe for disaster.

Justine is a boyfriend-less chef; at least, that’s the last thing she remembers. After a fall wiped the memories of the last two years of her life, she is struggling to absorb her new circumstances. Apparently, she’s the racy star of her own web-based cooking show and has become involved with a sexy younger man. Why would amnesia strike when her whole life has had such a major upgrade?

Carter is living the life he’s always dreamed of, a life with Justine, and he refuses to let a bump on the head derail his perfectly laid plans for a Happily Ever After. He’ll do whatever it takes to remind her that they are the perfect couple, but how do you make the woman you love remember that she loves you?

Luckily for the both of them, her recollections are tied up with her hormones, and they have all the ingredients they need for a happy life.

No recipe required: Just Add Heat

Baby, It’s Cold Outside–Carter’s life is chugging right along. Career? Check. Living with the love of his life? Check. Future on track? Not so fast. Suddenly, his perfect life is thrown upside down when Justine’s accident wipes her memories. He’s got to make sure she remembers their past so that they can have a happily-ever-after in their future.

Do you ever want to know what the hero of a romance novel is thinking? Where Just Add Heat tells Justine’s story, Baby It’s Cold Outside gives you Carter’s version of the same events. It’s true what they say; men and women don’t think in the same way. The difference is all in the perspective!

Review

This was perfect chick lit. It was from different POV’s which lately I have really been enjoying. Sometimes thing run a muck when they go from narrator to one or more POV. If you enjoy your chick-lit then this IS for you.  The story is opening with Justine who bumps her head and doesn’t remember a thing. She is confused and startled why this “Carter” is there using endearments and taking care of her. It is sort of humorous to me. Poor Justine lost 2 years of memory. That means nothing about Carter is stored in her brain!

Just as Justine’s memories begin to return it get GOOD! Is Carter who and what she wants? Her forever? Just grab it up and indulge It is a love story with of course the chick lit flair I adore and a few shakes of spice!

My Blog and my freedom of speech

I am on a rant! If you feel the need to stand high on the pulpit and write hateful words like that then YOU make my ears want to bleed. If I could say fuck off and slap this person I would. There is NO place for words like this and reviews that make me ashamed to be on Goodreads. Specifically if you have such strong feelings about a book you need to be medicated! To whine over $2 is simply pathetic!

I have read a few books; maybe I am in the minority, that were blah. I never wrote a bad review. I never used hateful words. I would simply say nothing. How about if your kid was reading in a play and someone said “Your child’s voice makes me want to rip my eardrums out” How would you feel? If your kid reads a speech and I said “I file that in DNF, Icky Icky” seriously this is infantile behavior. Maybe think before you write. The pen is mightier than the sword. Say it forget it write it regret it.

I think if you have time on your hands to write a five paragraph hateful review, then something is wrong with you. When I asked why DNF is just not enough, why are you writing cruel words? This ignorant ass told me I had thin skin. NO what I have is a college degree, authors who I respect that respect me back and a brain. I have better things to do than make a directory for books with a typo.

This was a big fat DNF. I made it to 76% , I threw in the towel and immediately felt better.

It’s spoiler time, folks! By the halfway point, I’d determined the following:
Samantha is a crappy friend to *****:
Samantha is a crappy friend to ****
Samantha is a crappy to ********:
I don’t even want to summarize this one. It’s a DNF with a wish that I hadn’t started it. I’ve seen people compare this to Anna and the French Kiss – that makes my brain start to bleed.

This is another one:

It should be some sort of a crime that this is $2.00 at Amazon. No, it would be horrible even if it were free. I want a refund and to be paid my hourly wage plus damages for pain and suffering.(I need pay to get over you words of hate and probably you should suffer a case of diarrhea)

All of that’s enough to make a pretty bad story because that is the story. There’s no character growth, no plot and no side characters other than a token, stereotypical gay male friend to feed Eva chocolate and ice cream when she’s depressed. There’s no drama other than Jake being a disgusting pig every five pages, then wondering if he may have lost Eva completely when she makes her teary sad face, right before being a pig again. But it got worse. I thought about actually attempting to do a thorough job and providing examples of what I’m about to talk about, but my head exploded when I started taking notes. I can’t do it.

I challenge anyone to find me a single page in this book that doesn’t contain at least ten misspelled words or grammatical errors. I’m not even going to make you count the formatting errors, punctuation mistakes or the gross mishandling of the English language. (You sat there counting with a dictionary? dumbass!) This isn’t an anti-book review, this is a pro-reader, pro-book-buyer review. No one should pay $2 for this. We need to have some standards (Like growing the hell up??)

Here is another classic idiot:

This was a terrible, terrible, trashy book. It should have been titled “Mary Sue and Gary Stu Question Their Sexuality”, because that is what it boiled down to.(You need a stiff something. OK aside from that take a trip to a high school, be careful getting off your high horse old lady. When you get there, do a survey and report back.  What were you trolling the Gay Lesbian section of the book store for? Did you forget where you left that nifty sweater with the bears on it? No? Maybe you forgot your AARP magazine)

I saw this on a list of the best GLBTQI YA books, and I don’t know why. Yes, several characters in the book are gay/bi/questioning, but with the way the book ends, it seems to send the message that being queer is just a trendy phase to tide you over until you find your ONE TRUE HETERO LOVE. (Right about now duct tape you and force you to watch countless hours of bad talk shows. Follow that by ten Hail Mary’s and 6 episodes of Maury followed by Steve Wilkos. Yeah U need it)

And don’t get me started on the characters. Mary Sue and Gary Stu respectively- especially , who has a horrible past of abuse, but is: brilliant, beautiful, rich, and talented at everything. Ever. It’s like reading terrible fanfiction.

In fact, most of the characters in the book are either woefully underdeveloped, or bad fanfic-esque paragons of perfectness (with just a little bit of parental angst to make them interesting).

I also found all the partying kind of ridiculous and over the top. This is basically the Hollywood fantasy of what high school kids are like, only in novel format. (wow take a trip to Orange County the land of fame and excess. The kids don’t drive their Mom’s cars they have their own BMW)

In short, I was appalled.

(oh my call SNL and get Church Lady to appear and SHF at you. Now nothing but porn for you and I will duct tape you again. I think 6 hours of that should be enough, but dont take that as gospel, I may add or retract any punishment at any time. It is my discretion. Which clearly do not to forget you need a good kick in your ass Brooklyn style)

The Council of Immortals has sworn to protect the Arc, whom they have identified as young Ella Monroe, a college freshman from Virginia living quietly and unaware of her powers or her past. But a renegade Chorý has other plans for the protection of a girl he has loved through the ages. Can Kale convince Ella of who she is, what she is destined to become, and what he once meant to her? Or will the forbidden love they share and Kale’s cursed condition as a wretched and hated Chorý be used against them both?

This paranormal romance told from the heroine’s perspective builds in intensity and intrigue to a finale you won’t see coming. Heart pounding action mixed with heartwarming friendships and heartbreaking romance will leave you breathless and begging for more.

Jess is nearly 40 when she meets Dan Harris at a party. She is single, sorted, happy – with a great job and a buzzy social and sex-life. All of this is threatened when she falls deeply in love with Dan, who is only 23.

Jess, being older, recognises this as the real, precious thing – but in his immaturity, Dan does not. Unable to cope with the stigma of being with an older woman, he eventually leaves her.

Ten years pass…

Jess, who is still gorgeous at 50, is married now, with a child of her own. They meet again. The years fall away.
This time, Dan understands – but is it too late?

My review:

Well I really enjoyed this one. There were parts that made me so sad and parts that I yelled at the book. sometimes walking away from someone is the hardest thing to do and Jess killed me when she did that. I think the love of her life was there, and so what he was younger! I was filled with angst!

I was being a little selfish thinking that I wanted more. I think the book could have been longer. One of my favorite quotes was “Being honest with you, Jess, I actually arranged to see Dave later as I knew that we’d be at it like rabbits if not. And as I am officially on the rebound, that wouldn’t be acceptable, now would it?

I think I hit a little jackpot meeting this author. Now I set out to read the rest of the books and plan a bundle giveaway! She needs to get some press from the states ladies read on!!

My Quotes and Notes

‘Being honest with you, Jess, I actually arranged to see Dave later as I knew that we’d be at it like rabbits if not. And as I am officially on the rebound, that wouldn’t be acceptable, now would it?’

She wanted to taunt this man, who had so readily dismissed her, the minute she had told him she was pregnant with his child. She was so lucky to have met Dan when she did, and was so easily able to pass Evie off as his. ‘Of course I haven’t told him. I’m not that stupid.

‘I don’t care.’ Jess said her voice beginning to crack. ‘I love being with you. It’s the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. You make me…’ She was lost for words. ‘We’re better together that’s all.’ She couldn’t contain her tears any longer.

Sam waved his beautiful wife and daughter off of the drive. Tears stung his eyes at the nature of his betrayal. What on earth was he thinking? How could he possibly even think of leaving this wonderful woman, adorable child and settled life behind for what?

It was incomprehensible; Sam was the father of Dan’s child! How could that be?

At least now, with him gone from their lives, she and Freya could move on, with no deceit hanging over them. Just pure honesty, trust and love.

Rick and Liam are two small-time con artists who live in the Koreatown section of Los Angeles–Rick is addicted to internet porn and dangerous women, while Liam is a functioning alcoholic who loves the New England Patriots as much as life itself.

The partners push their luck one time too many, and while Rick is recovering from a life-altering beatdown he received at a casino, he falls in love with a mystery woman online, a webcam-girl known as Amethyst. When Rick learns that she lives across the city, where she has been forced into prostitution by a gang of Russian sex-traffickers, he sets out to save her.

In order to do that, however, he must betray his longtime partner and steal their savings, which Liam has built up with a series of shrewdly-placed sports bets. Rick makes his move, just as Liam places the mother of all wagers, on his beloved Patriots.

Things go horribly wrong, and the two friends find themselves scrambling for cash to stave off their leg-breaking Korean bookies. With only three days to raise all the money, the partners hatch a desperate scheme to blackmail a philandering US congressman. At the same time, their friendship is threatened by Rick’s wild, unpredictable new girlfriend.
