The Truth About Lies (The Truth Duet, #1)

Truth: From over a thousand miles away, I watched on the screen of my phone as two men murdered my wife. And I was helpless to save her.

Consumed by hate and rage, I spent four years running from my memories.

Until a shattered woman gave me a reason to stop.

Cora lived in a nightmare, but through sheer force of will, she’d turned it into something beautiful. She had a smile that could pierce the darkest soul. And with one glance, she shredded mine.

Lie: I was only there for a fresh start.

Lie: I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

Lie: There was nothing I could do to save her, either.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

WOW what needs to be said other than WOW

Penn opens in a VERY dark scene. It is no spoiler, but bad guys that want to get to him target WHO? the wife of course. it is tragic, vivid, hard to read and dark. this awful phone call lasts almost 30 minutes and tragically changes Penn in ways that nobody wants to be forced to live in. I do like this author a lot, so it was a fairly fast read. The characters who are in “the house” are on floor numbers according to their status. There are 3 floors in this horribly described house of whores. it seems dark, dirty and awful, but a way of life for all the residents.

Cora is the Momma Bear and a Guerrero. It seems that she did get the one brother who was good. BUT, as the saying goes, only the good die young. The Guerrero brothers are drug pushers, flesh peddlers and ruthless in all aspects of the family business. The leader is in prison so the sons are basically in charge of the empire. Penn is brought in to be the “handyman” and his mission to get the goods on the family is set up really solid. This aspect of the book is totally what grabs you in and keeps you turning the pages.  The series starts off really good bringing promise of more to come. Specifically September 13th is the release for book 2. At least you can get more without having to wait too long. NO cliffhangers here.

A true must read for Aly fans. It is amazing how this series kick-off can be so epic.

I really can’t wait for your thoughts. You will not be disappointed.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

Wreck You (The Wrecked Series Book 1) by Abby McCarthy

Well I am sadly disappointed. I think if you are a new MC reader, then maybe give it a try.

IF you have read author as like Chelsea Camaron, Madeline Sheehan, Kristen Ashley, then you don’t need to know what a prospect is. If I would say, complete picking out things, that a bar fly is a bar fly not a bar slut. Even I (who loves a love story) cant get into the instant love thing between Maura and Corbin. You don’t think “Can I be in love ?” 48 hours after you meet the guy. It wont be much of a spoiler but she was 20, drinking in bars and a virgin. Last thing is there is NO MC club that would let a girl (a member’s daughter) leave with a civilian if they didn’t vet him. The Marine, Corbin, kills men without batting a eyelash after knowing Maura for a day. That is not a Marine!

There was an editing issue too. Authors really need some betas who care. if a character’s name is Dawson why do people call him Daws, sounded ridiculous when I was reading.

I gave up halfway in. I really didn’t care what happened.

I am Grey by Jane Washington @TheAuthorPerson #Review

The fault is in the cover! It just doesnt fit the book. I mean I see the lighthouse and the character of Grey, aka Mika Grey, but it just doesn’t depict troubled kids that need a psych consult. Dr Fell hhhmmm out of character to find him in the trailer park too. You have to be there I guess. Anyways, the plot for me, was pretty good. The author really does do dark well. I felt the pain in some of the characters. I enjoyed Jean, her story, her truth should have been bigger. The Duke, Smith, Marcus story was really good. They were solid characters, written good but, could have been great.

For me there were parts of the past and present that made me ignore some dumb choices. Many times when a character is written good, you speak bad words out loud, so YES I did yell at Mika a few times.

The the past was unraveling (really slow too) so I saw what made her the way she was today. The story of Nic, Dr. Fell was not a guarded secret among her friends either.

Overall a really solid read, but it is dark. There are drugs, forced sex and troubled youth involved. So you have been warned.

When I read there is a hi-light and quote field on Kindle. I always hi-light and I take the time when I see something outstanding. So HERE are some of my favorite quotes:

“I had a bad friendship credit rating, and none of these people were going to invest in me. I wasn’t sure what that reduced friendship to, but I feared that it wasn’t much.”
24%
“I’m going to push your limits, break you down, make you cry, and in the end … I’ll save you.”
26%
“Don’t get confused,” Nicholai repeated, backing away and returning to his seat behind the desk. “Don’t assume that you know me. It’s my place to know everything about you, but it doesn’t need to go both ways.”
26%
“Who are you?” I whispered. “You don’t want to know.”
“Tell me anything.”
“Who I am isn’t important, but I will tell you what I am, because that has everything”
26%
I was terrified. Not of the depths he was obviously willing to go to in his mission to save me, but of the concept of being saved. I wasn’t ready. I probably never would be.
26%
“You’re nobody to me,” I said, staring directly into his eyes, relaying the message that needed to be relayed. Tossing all of his beautiful words straight back into his beautiful face. “You’re just a passing train, tumbleweed in the breeze, a face in a sea of faces. I have no future, and nothing you do is going to change that fact. I’ll destroy whatever I want to destroy, burn whatever I want to burn, jump off whatever I feel like jumping off of”
51%
It hurt. It reminded me of things I didn’t want to think about it, and then I didn’t want to do it anymore.”
NOW my lovelies this was deep
55%
I wasn’t just crying. I was shedding fragments, too broken to feel the emotion attached to each piece as it broke away from me.
57%
Was it possible to be entirely what one person expected of me, and yet entirely what another person expected of me, when those expectations were in direct opposition to one another?
70%
People didn’t have a choice, they listened when he spoke, gave when he asked.

The Sweetest Oblivion by Danielle Lori @DanielleLori2 #Review

It was the epitome of dark! It continues to haunt me even two days after I saw “the end” Nothing I could say will be worthy.
3 days after…..dun dun dun dunnnnnn….

OK I will try. Just a few thoughts. Elena is a great character, before this awful thing, she was sweet. She sort of embodied what a daughter in her family should act like. She was courteous, respectful and silent when she needed to be. Her character was really written with a few great qualities. I loved how she was silently studying everyone all the time. She really knew what was going on. You know what they say about the quiet ones? They are the people you must watch out for. She was the sponge always taking it all in. She probably knew 80% of the family business. Believe me a lot of things that can sour a person, leaving them jaded.

The author creates what will be a fantastic series!

The family is all set up by the book ending. You will know, hate, love and like some of them. Celia was funny. Her mothering comedy was the type that became a breathe of fresh air. Who was better? Better than Celia? Nonna! She managed to make me laugh many times throughout their family dialogue.

There is a shoe that will drop, but not for a while. The mystery about what Elena did and why she ran away takes forever! I was so on edge. The level of mystery was level 10 for sure!  What else is there to say? Great story, great characters and an even better plot. Bravo Danielle and thank you for trusting me to review your book!

LIAR by Stephanie St. Klaire

AVAILABLE NOW

Synopsis:

Fake it until you make it. That was the mantra Cori Dash chanted as she chased a big city dream. The more you tell people you’re on top of the world, the more they believe it – just like they believed the embellished image she sold them with her knock off designer facade. It wasn’t lying if the truth stood somewhere in the middle – and she didn’t get caught.

Dominic Blackthorne owned half of that big city…and a reputation. Rather than dispel rumors or show the world the real Nick, he let his own fake image run free. Until Cori Dash – the only person who told him exactly how it was, even if it stung.

When Cori is faced with her ex-fiance, now engaged to her ex-best friend, it’s game on. In her boldest move yet, she concocts her biggest lie to date by introducing the first handsome stranger that walks by as her new fiancé. Happy to play the part, Nick is already planning the fake wedding of her dreams.

You know what they say about lying – the truth always comes out – and it hurts. Especially when Cori finds out she isn’t the biggest Liar in this game, and she’s been out played.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Stephanie St. Klaire is a Pacific Northwest native currently living in Portland, Oregon with her husband, five children, and two ferocious lap dogs that are used to the finer things in life like sleeping all day. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found with a plate full of taco’s, a side of bean dip, and probably some gummy bears while being a little bit hippy and a lot bit busy mom’ing and wife’ing.

When she’s not tossing around gritty crime show inspired serial killers and diabolical bad guys, she likes to make people pee their pants a little with a good romcom. Sometimes, her worlds collide, and she writes really funny stuff right before she kills people off on the pages! She loves murder and mayhem as much as a good laugh and HEA! That’s why she’s a die-hard Hallmark junky but loves her gritty crime shows – balance!

Stephanie has always been a story teller, with the gift of “gab”, and a life-long goal to be a writer. Unfortunate circumstances with her health, finally afforded her the time to do so. Irony at its best, she began writing her first novel at an adverse time, to escape her circumstance and explore the stories in her imagination for relief. She is happy to share those stories with her readers, and bring a little fun, entertainment, and of course smexy characters to the pages.

The Sweetest Oblivion by Danielle Lorei @DanielleLori2 #Must #Read

She’s a romantic at heart, living in the most unromantic of worlds . . .

Nicknamed Sweet Abelli for her docile nature, Elena smiles on cue and has a charming response for everything. She’s the favored daughter, the perfect mafia principessa . . . or was.

Now, all she can see in the mirror’s reflection is blood staining her hands like crimson paint.

They say first impressions are everything . . .

In the murky waters of New York’s underworld, Elena’s sister is arranged to marry Nicolas Russo. A Made Man, a boss, a cheat—even measured against mafia standards. His reputation stretches far and wide and is darker than his black suits and ties. After his and Elena’s first encounter ends with an accidental glare on her part, she realizes he’s just as rude as he is handsome.

She doesn’t like the man or anything he stands for, though that doesn’t stop her heart from pattering like rain against glass when he’s near, nor the shiver that ghosts down her spine at the sound of his voice.

And he’s always near. Telling her what to do. Making her feel hotter than any future brother-in-law should. Elena may be the Sweet Abelli on the outside, but she’s beginning to learn she has a taste for the darkness, for rough hands, cigarettes, and whiskey-colored eyes. Having already escaped one scandal, however, she can hardly afford to be swept up in another.

Besides, even if he were hers, everyone knows you don’t fall in love with a Made Man . . . right?

This is a standalone forbidden romance

Inciting a Riot by Karen Renee @karenreneewrite

Tucker took one step back from me to take in my dress. His lips pursed and shifted to the side, and then he nodded at me. I couldn’t hear him over the frantic beats of Moby, but I could read his lips were saying, “You’re right.” He turned his back on me, and without allowing me to decide which pair I wanted to wear, his right hand shoved my Jimmy Choo Koko high-heeled sandals at me. Don’t get me wrong, they were stellar shoes, but I wasn’t certain they were the shoes I wanted to wear for the evening. When I didn’t immediately take them from Tucker’s outstretched hand, his head swiveled to me and he glared.

I glared even as I took the shoes from him. I moved toward the bed to assess my other two pairs of shoes, but Tucker immediately put the shoe-box lids on them. My casted right hand went immediately to my hip, and my left motorcycle boot clad foot shot out at an angle. The other two men in the room felt my vibe and Tucker looked up at them. Then he looked to me and straightened.

“Problem?” he asked, and I could hear him because the song had ended.

“I’d like to look at the other two pairs of shoes I asked you to bring, if you don’t mind.”

Let me tell you, heterosexual men were not the only males of the species who could turn alpha on a girl. My snippy comment had effectively poked the alpha within Tucker. He moved into my space and growled at me, “I mind. Did you two favors tonight, Frankie. I got your shoes and brought them up here, and I took in your excellent dress and made the decision on which of these three pairs of shoes were most appropriate. Don’t insult me by second-guessing me. Switch your shoes and I’ll walk you out to put the others in the back of your ride.”

My lips were set in a firm, straight line as I fought to hold on to my temper. Reggie entered the room at that point with two glasses of wine in hand.

He stopped mid-stride. “Uh-oh. What have I walked in on here?”

One of the two men in the room said, “A showdown. This should be fun.”

Reggie looked from the man back to Tucker and me. “Oh. Yes, you never should have included a pair of knock-off Choos in your request for shoe options, dear. If Tuck has proclaimed you should wear those shoes in your hand, then you need to do as he advises. When it comes to fashion on other people, he is not wrong. You know this, Frankie.”

I slowly turned my head to the left to look at Reggie and just as slowly I raised an eyebrow at him. He shrugged at me, and I realized I did know that Tucker had excellent fashion sense. It was like the way some people had a natural card-sense when playing poker, bridge, or gin-rummy. Tucker was blessed with an innate sense of fashion and what suited individual people as well as their bodies and coloring. I didn’t like this aspect of Tucker’s personality, not his fashion brilliance, but his alpha-esque pushiness about it.

“Fine,” I huffed as I plopped my ass on the bed and began to untie my motorcycle boots.
