BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Rebecca Miller is a gifted veterinarian with an extraordinary understanding of animal behavior. She is leading a fulfilling life as the owner and operator of the Animal Friends Veterinary Clinic. Ever since her 30th birthday, her mother has made it her mission to help Rebecca find a man, get married, and give her grandchildren. But Rebecca doesn’t see the need for a man in her life. She has her dog, Captain, and that’s all the companionship she needs. However, her world changes the day she literally runs into Derrick Peterson, a gorgeously handsome ER doctor.
Derrick’s experiences with women have taught him that they are vain, silly, and untrustworthy. He keeps his relationships with them brief and superficial. However, he finds himself being irresistibly drawn to Rebecca. She’s smart, witty, compassionate, and very different from the women he usually encounters. Will Rebecca be the one to break down the wall he’s spent a lifetime building around his heart?

5 ★★★★★ Review of Billi Tiner’s Dogs Aren’t Men

Dr. Rebecca Miller is a gifted veterinarian, leading a happy and fulfilling life at her veterinary clinic. Her Golden Retriever, Captain, is her constant and only companion, and she doesn’t see the need for any men in her life. She believes that having crossed the Rubicon of thirty, her odds aren’t that great anyway. However, her mother has other plans. She wants grandchildren.
Rebecca runs (literally) into Derrick on a basketball court, and she feels a strange attraction to the tanned and handsome ER doctor.
Coincidentally, Rebecca’s mom sets up a blind date for Rebecca originally intended to be with Derrick. It goes haywire and she winds up with Derrick’s best friend, Mitch, on a double date. Unfortunately, Derrick has shown up with a stunning blonde and this does nothing to make Rebecca think she has a chance with Derrick.
Rebecca is an independent, tough, and intelligent heroine. And the rest of the other characters are written with a depth and realism that makes you really care about their lives. The interaction and chemistry was great, and the dialogue terrific.
Being an animal lover, I enjoyed the realistic depiction of veterinary life, especially after I discovered that the author is herself a veterinarian.
I also liked the quick pace of this story. Ms. Tiner keeps it moving and doesn’t get caught up in lengthy filler paragraphs that you’ll find in other books.

A fun read. Highly recommend.

A Night to Forget is the first book in the two-book series, Emma’s Story. The second book in this series, The Day to Remember is scheduled to be released in 2013.

What happens in Cancun doesn’t always stay in Cancun.

When Emma Anderson and her friends decided to spend their senior year Spring Break in Cancun, she expected some crazy memories to end their final college days. What Emma didn’t expect was to meet Brandon Fisher. Tall and sexy, with dimples that would make any girl swoon, Brandon Fisher was literally the man of Emma’s dreams. She couldn’t quite believe that this stranger, who seduced her every night in her dreams, actually existed.

After serendipitously bumping into each other, Emma could not resist Brandon’s pull and spent an unforgettable night with him. Passing it off as a spring break fling, Emma never expected to see Brandon again. But when she started her first day at her new job a few months later, there he was. The only problem was, Brandon didn’t even remember her.

About this author

Jessica Wood writes new adult contemporary romance and chick-lit.

While she has lived in countless cities throughout the U.S., her heart belongs to San Francisco. To her, there’s something seductively romantic about the Golden Gate Bridge, the steep rolling hills of the city streets, the cable cars, and the Victorian-style architecture.

She loves a strong, masculine man with a witty personality. While she is headstrong and extremely independent, she can’t resist a man who takes control of the relationship, both outside and inside of the bedroom.

She loves to travel internationally, and tries to plan a yearly trip abroad. She also loves to cook and bake, and—to the benefit of her friends—she loves to share. She also enjoys ceramics and being creative with her hands. She has a weakness for good (maybe bad) TV shows; she’s up-to-date on over 25 current shows, and no, that wasn’t a joke.

And it goes without saying, she loves books—they’re like old and dear friends who have always been there to make her laugh and make her cry.

The one thing she wished she had more of is time.

First Kiss by Ann Marie Frohoff @rockinwriterchk #review

ENTER to win I am giving away five copies of both books in the series

First Kiss (A Heavy Influence Novel, #1) Well I am so sad to end this book. I will say BEST BOOK I have READ.When you write a review and think about a character for a day to decide what to write that is when it is EPIC. The blending of love, angst, hate and heart break was perfect. When you say this was a five star book it means something left a great impression on you, the characters spoke, the author had style and communicated the message perfectly. This was the case for me. Even though I gasped and cursed it is a sign that the message was there. What I loved was of course the main characters. You MUST read book 1 it is short and it pissed me off that it was short, but it was just a set-up for this book. I got done last night and I actually sat here thinking all day what to write. This was the best book. I hope you know I dont say that often but I was so touched by it. So Jake and Alyssa live next door to each other and were besties growing up and then things took off for Jake and his band. So they just passed each other and then BAM fate happens and they started to talk again. Should I tell you who else I loved? Ok I loved Rachel, yeah I know right? She was with Jake in a momentary lapse in judgement at the beginning of the book. Not giving a spoiler here. Anyways she is the girl you love to hate. I did hate her and I tried so hard to think what if I was in her shoes, desperately in love with Jake, helping him and the band for 2 years, and then sex, drama and no relationship. But I loved how the authors style made me sympathize and then totally hate her to the point I wanna stab her with a pencil repeatedly. Alyssa’s sister who is older, yes I was made me dislike her too. The Allison story was great once her reveal came. I was wondering why I just “didn’t like” as opposed to I hated her. Kyle was my dude. How he loved his sister and covered for her and let her see Jake, well it makes me wish I had a brother.    I loved the Nicole and Nadine- the dialogue the friendship. A girl needs best friends like that. I think of my girls in Brooklyn and we were/still like that. There were so many memories that came back when I was reading their little gossip fest topics. 5b804-jakeandallyimageforfkbookcover Marshall and Bobby were so good.Bobby in the band as well as Mike (grrr growling like a pitbull) and Dumpster aka Dump. All of them had the best supporting roles. Now there was Sienna too. She was Dump’s girl and Rachel’s bff. Now she was a BFF but there is a big BUT, she was so fair and called Rachel out on things. Dump did too, he was a neanderthal but to Sienna, OMG he loved her. Aly and Jake were so perfect. I could care less about the age difference. The sneaking around and the drama was great. Notting (English dude with a really strange name)and Kate were very complex too. Jakes Dad passed away a long time ago. His Mom and his manager “had a thing” but they never made anything big or official. It has to be read and discussed. The author is golden! She has so many fantastic tunes in the book and they are going to come out too. Squeals if delight! I loved the songs! I want it to be big. We have to do something to get the word out. I am doing my part for sure. So the last reason is the story of love, health, growing up and redemption. We all fall down and some of us dont get up for a while. Some of us bounce right back. The story of love is epic and one that must be read. I know people would dis agree, but sometimes you do find the one.I feel like I am babbling but I love Jake. 5 stars This is a passage and it shows the depth that I look for in a book: “The sun hung low, casting a hue of golden tones over everything it touched. It was a luminous late afternoon and the intense heat was finally subsiding. Staring at the water, I wanted to go swimming. I was overwhelmed with mixed emotions, and the water would be a soothing remedy. I felt drunk. Drunk love, was that what I was high on? Was I in love? Was this what being in love felt like? I was almost certain it was”   HOW long until the next book??? The Fall???

The Author extraordinaire:

ann marie frohoff 5211881

Ann Marie (“Annie”) Frohoff grew up in sunny Southern California. As a teen and young adult she spent her time frequenting and living in nearly every beachside city up and down the coast. She settled in Hollywood at 19 working in film and TV. Soon her itch to keep moving took over again, taking her to Hawaii for a time and then back to LA. She’s now settled in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Her wanderlust and propensity to live life out loud has brought her many life experiences so many of us only dream about. Always the storyteller, it would be of no surprise to those who grew up with Annie, that she made the transition into a book and screenplay author. You could say that she woke up one day and had an epiphany, deciding to go to school for screenwriting. It’s with this inner fire she set out to write her first screenplay. Soon after, such work made it into the hands of an agency creative executive who challenged her to write a novel to support the complex ensemble cast of characters she’d created. Thus, after only a couple of years and many hours on the road immersing herself in her subject matter; her edgy modern day “Walk The Line meets John Hughes Classics” debut novella, SKID OUT, has been completed, along with the first installment in her Trilogy. SKID OUT is the prequel novella to the HEAVY INFLUENCE TRILOGY. The first installment in her Heavy Influence Trilogy, FIRST KISS, is set to release June 11th 2013 — The series is a story about young, reckless love between a rising rock star and his younger muse, spanning 10 years of their tumultuous and passionate relationship. Each book in the Trilogy will come with a soundtrack of original music, of which the lyrics will appear in the pages of the books. (Alternative Rock Genre). Annie has now also delved into the supernatural fantasy world with her writing partners Shaun Barger and songwriter/musician Matthew Reich. Taking inspiration directly from song lyrics and building an entire realm of vastly complex characters and plot lines; weaving history, fantasy and heavy doses of romance together. You will be kept turning the pages of “The Zodiac Wars: My Gemini” novellas and “Precious Metal: The Prince and the Gypsy” book series. Both series of books are currently in development. My Review:

I think I liked it because it had a lesson and left me happy, not longing for the next book to come out. I think as I was growing up, having 2 sisters, at one time or another you wanted to switch places. Now all of us resembled each other, but could never be a twin.  I will say that there is an alternating POV and usually I hate those, but this was real time, not past versus present. So for that reason I was cool with it. I will say that Bryn passes away. I guess it is no secret that this is the premise of the book.

smiles angel

Now when confronted with the choice of becoming Bryn and stating the truth, well that is hard. It is choice Jesse has to carefully choose. The fact that I liked the characters, Quentin and Bryn were perfect. I really enjoyed the personal war Jesse starts to have. She sort of goes with it and doesn’t justify her choice or lack of a choice. That is something I liked and the reason why I feel, she was likable.

I won’t say that this is a light book, it is not. The overall writing is great, the characters are too, the message is there. I really liked how the high school drama plays out. The teenage mind is a mystical thing. The way Jesse chooses her path is great. The redeeming qualities of her character were my favorite part. The other was the young adult part was pretty pg and for that I am thankful, no need to tarnish the book with a lot of smut. I like smut, but this didn’t call for it. I say read it now!

He’s determined to set things right, no matter the cost.

The last person Abby Crawford wants to face down is country music superstar Seth Kendall. Last time she did, she flat-out lied so he’d go to Nashville without her. She’s never understood why their mutual best friend proposed, but she went with it so her baby wouldn’t be fatherless. Now she’s a divorced mother of a teenager, and secretly Seth’s biggest fan.

Seth is home in McAllister, Texas for his father’s funeral…and a chance to meet the daughter he’s never known. He’s willing to face the music of his own making and admit he’s known about his little girl all along. For fifteen years he’s kept his distance because Abby told him to follow his dreams without her, insisting she didn’t love him. But now he won’t leave until he knows his daughter and she knows him, even if it means facing the woman who broke his heart for good.

Confessing she’s lied about her daughter’s paternity all these years won’t be easy for Abby, especially with her ex blackmailing her to keep the secret. And Seth doesn’t know the hardest truth of all: Every love song he plays on his guitar still plucks her heartstrings.

CONTENT WARNING: Spicy sex.

 Excerpt:

Seth leaned in. His lips were close enough to kiss, and his scent of sandalwood and something exotic enveloped her, taking her back to that night on the beach. His eyes flashed with the dangerous fire of his temper. It was similar to the flame of the passion she’d once seen in the green depths. Abby didn’t expect or want the heat curling in her belly, and shivered with a sudden and fierce desire.

“I’m her father, Abigail. I wanted to be her father after she was born. It was you and Mike who insisted I had no business messing things up.”

“I never said any such thing. You never tried. You just left.”

He pounded a fist on the counter top so hard she jumped. “Yes, I left! I wasn’t welcome at home. Dad ran me off with a shotgun. Mike wouldn’t even let me see my daughter. He made it quite clear you and he were happily married, and I had no place in your life. I was under contract to be in Nashville to start recording my first album.”

What did he mean, Mike wouldn’t let him see Emily?

Before she had a chance to voice her question, his eyes darkened as the pupils dilated, obscuring the stormy green. “But I’m no longer nineteen and scared shitless. I could make things very rough for you and this fantasy you’ve got working.”

A cold lump quickly replaced the tangle of heat in her belly. “What-what do you mean?”

He backed off and tapped the countertop. “I’m talking a custody battle. I could have a judge order a paternity test. I think we both know the media hoopla the results would cause.”

Her heart slammed into her chest wall. “You wouldn’t do that.”

“Try me. Now that I’ve met Emily, I want to get to know her.” He walked over to look out the kitchen window. The hard line of his jaw melted, and he swallowed so hard his throat moved up and down. “I was a fool when I let Mike talk me out of being in her life after she was born.”

“What do you mean?”

He glanced at her. “Don’t pretend you don’t know.”

The strings of guitar music provided a soft counterpoint to the hard tension in the kitchen. Emily was outside on the patio playing around with her guitar, waiting for them to finish with the dishes she and Seth had insisted on doing.

“All I want is to have some time with my daughter. That’s all I’m asking for.” When he looked over his shoulder at her, sadness replaced the anger in his eyes. “I’ll keep your little secret. I’ll just be her favorite singer. The family friend who made it big in Nashville. I don’t want to hurt her. As much as it galls the hell out of me, I see what Mike means to her.”

He moved toward her and shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “Besides, I don’t want to hurt Carolann or Frank any more than you do.” He glanced outside again, his voice husky as he spoke. “But I’ll sue you if I have to.”

A part of her wanted to give in to him, but a larger part wanted to punish him. Let him take her to court; she’d make sure the world knew what kind of jerk Seth Kendall really was.

She gritted her teeth and fisted her hands by her sides. “I’ll let you have tonight, Seth. But don’t ask for more.”

She turned away and strode through the French doors.

Twisted Perfection by Abbi Glines @abbiglines @tale_of_reviews **review**

Twisted Perfection Blog Tour

TP cover

Book Review:

As an avid reader and fan of Abbi Glines it is a little difficult to write a review. I seriously am so in love with her writing and the style that I feel I am not worthy. I had the other books in this series and they were in my TBR on my Kindle. So when I upgraded to the new Kindle Fire I still had a ton of books that I didn’t move over. Anyway, I was on a 4 day 3 book Abbi Glines marathon. In other words I was in heaven! Start with Fallen Too Far and Never Too Far if you have not, I really stress they are add on books and I think it is better to read in order and not as a stand alone.

For this series I will say it was a bit different from other books like Because of Low and well the entire Sea Breeze collection. I know the way it was different, it was a little naughty for her! So I loved it!. The third book is Twisted Perfection and I hope it wont be the last. Sometimes you think can things get better? With this author YES they can and they do. The characters in the first two books are back, which is good. When it starts it is a prologue to Della Sloane’s story.  She has dark secrets and her past is completely hidden. I hope nobody gives any of these reveals away, because it really must be experienced.

Welcome to my honey, Woods Kerrington, his Dad owns the Golf course. Big money family with traditional southern values. They are like the epitome of class and wealth. There is the back story from the other books that ties in here and Woods is a big workaholic. All he thinks of is the VP job and being in charge of the golf course. Until…secrets, reveals, family, love, and Della Sloane take a hold of him. What happens to the country club workaholic is vital to the story. Just understand that he is NOT the usual type, he cares about money, yes, but he makes it himself. He doesn’t rely on anyone so that is so important to the story. Another reason to love Woods!

It really can get better if we get more of this series. When the development is woven and the characters are so rich, it is a shame to just say bye bye.  I think lovers of this series and the author would like to see Bethy get her story and I think Rush needs to get things ties up. Grant, oh my lovey can he please get a book? Maybe waiter Jimmy too? Well if I can ask for maybe one more Tripp? I would beg at this point for more. There is lots of steam, lots of drama and it is highly addictive! You have been warned, no go read!

The Only Exception by Magan Vernon @MaganVernon @SPNHeather

Image

Fiercely liberal Monica Remy prefers to blend in. Despite her tattoos, piercings, and outspoken personality, she transferred to Central to escape—before she finds out that her next door neighbor is the ultra, Republican, liberal, tight ass conservative governor’s son, Trey Chapman. This is such a perfect set up to start the book off. The BEST couple I have read about in a while. When you read this book please know that it will make you smart! I learned a few things! Monica has a room mate that starts her college transfer off to a bad start, Trey next door makes it worse. When the cops come for a marijuana room mate situation I sadly found humor in it. She just can’t win, things are making her feel alone and when she goes to work serving up coffee he shows up. Then a class debate project forces them together.

There is a few pretty decent sized reveals. I really don’t want anyone to say what they are. It will ruin the effect these events have. The family conflicts, the school conflicts and the fact he is next door is just priceless.

Such a fabulous read. I love the author and the fact that this is a debut blows me away! (Get it ? a political book ok I’m laughing Bill Clinton!) Trey’s politics seem to be “not so bad” before you know it. He adores her way of keeping him in his toes. He likes a challenge and Monica is a BIG challenge. in many ways. They are sort of destined… .I LOVED it!

Evelyn Beaumont can’t remember anything from the time she was 14 until she was 19. She lost five years of her life because of brain cancer. Now she is a 20 years old survivor and enrolled in college, determined to reclaim her life. There she meets Tristan Monroe, but it isn’t the first time they’ve met. In fact, Tristan and Evelyn were once in love. It was a love so strong that it shattered him when, after the three years they had spent together, she never came back to Laguna.

Evelyn wants nothing more than to have her memories back. With the help of Tristan and his brother Drake, they take Evelyn on an emotional journey filled with videos, photos, and memorabilia…a walk down memory lane.

While they stroll down memory lane, Evelyn must learn to deal with Tristan’s rock star fame and the ever-present groupies. She struggles to find herself and to learn to love again.

Is their love strong enough to overcome the memory loss? Is it strong enough to survive whatever comes their way? Will all the proof Tristan shares with her be enough to show her how deeply they loved each other? Will love find Evelyn once again?

Review

This was just a phenomenal book. There is so much to say about the writing, the characters and the scenery. I am fortunate to live in Orange County and if you read it you will want to visit Laguna Beach. The synopsis tells you enough about the journey. This will not be a review that gives you a description or synopsis. I am not a fan of those. What I’d like to say is Tristan and Drake are dreamy guys! The families and friends that have just gravitated towards Evelyn are amazing. When she gets to college and things begin to happen it is not the past but the future that is pulling at your heart. It will make you see what I did, that life is too short and too uncertain. It doesn’t matter how old you are or your history, cancer will touch too many lives. I got through it!

Take my advice and read the book. I would say it is a sentimental journey, a love story and a story about the worst disease I know cancer. I hate to say I know too much about it and that is why the book spoke volumes. Read it and love it like I KNOW many will.
