An Ordinary Me by Brooklyn Taylor @authorbrooklynt @SNS_BAH

ordinary me Front Cover

From the outside looking in Garrison Davis seems like every other senior in high school. On the inside though, he’s an emotional wreck promising to not love anyone. He chooses to protect himself by vowing solitude. His dad is in prison for dealing drugs; his mother is a recovering addict and an emotional mess. The only thing that brings him joy is playing the drums and that feeling of being needed by his band. It is his escape, his passion. No one gets hurt or disappointed.  That is until he lays his eyes on Reese at school. She is the exact example of what he cannot let himself get involved in. He would do nothing but drag her down with him.

“I want to tell her and show her how much I love her. I had loved her from the first time I spotted her in that courtyard smiling but I can’t, I won’t. She deserves so much more than I can offer. I’m the spawn of a drug dealer and an addict. I have never let myself love another person and now…  I love her so much it hurts.”

Reese Owens is the exact opposite of Garrison. Inside she’s beaming; growing up in a happy home and on the outside she was a duck out of water. Her parents are the over protective set but are finally loosening the jail bars. Sophomore year in high school, she has never dated a boy and is envious of the social life her best friend Autumn Welch has. She meets Garrison and is instantly attracted to him. He pulls away when she pushes in. A whole new world opens up to Reese and she finds herself falling into situations she can’t get herself out of. Making bad decision after bad decision, she finds out the hard way on how life is full of choices.  The one thing she wants more than anything is Garrison’s attention which she doesn’t get in return.

“How is it possible to love someone and keep it quiet? Never to utter those very words knowing he doesn’t feel the same way. I finally fall in love and he only wants to be friends. He is everything I have always wanted and he keeps me at a distance making sure we don’t get too close. How can I ignore my feelings and act like I don’t have them when we are around each other? How do I resist the urge to move my lips towards his when he is talking to me?”

Garrison realizes he has to be honest with Reese and tell her how he really feels before he loses her for good. Just maybe, he will get love in return for the first time in his life. When he finally convinces himself to come forth, a life changing event occurs that could take away the only person in his life that truly loves him.

Is it too late? Does he get the chance to tell her? And when he confesses does it matter?

*Garrison*

Morning after morning, I wake myself up. I don’t have the normal mother or father to tell me to have a good day or make me breakfast. Sure I’m a senior in high school, but I’ve never had that. Even in elementary I took care of myself. My dad was dealing heavy drugs at the time and when he wasn’t dealing he was high or sleeping. Mom had tried several times to stay drug free but wasn’t successful with it. My dad wanted her just like him, destroyed. I have never really known what it was like to have parents that care. They didn’t understand why I hated the life we lived. More times than not they voiced their frustration that I thought I was better than them.

I listened to people talk about how their parents were annoying and watched them like hawks. They had to lie to do things they wanted to do when caring parents would try to provide them a net, so they wouldn’t get hurt, something that was only a dream for me. I yearned for that and knew I was never going to get it. I saw things I shouldn’t have seen but all it did was make me want to strive even more to make it, to get away from it. I was going to make it, and I was going to be nothing like my parents.

My evenings were pretty identical to my mornings. I did my homework, drummed with the band and then made myself something to eat. Mom worked at a hotel in housekeeping and when she was home she was either sleeping or sitting in her room in silence. I don’t know if she knew if I was dead or alive half the time nor would she have cared. Well that’s not true. If I was dead Aunt Ellen wouldn’t be paying our bills.

This is my senior year and all of my friends were going to be hanging out, partying, and having a good time, while I was just going to be living my life. It was a vicious cycle, and I was willing to do it because I knew I would survive it all. I was going to go to college and do the one thing that would piss my parents off the most and I would have full satisfaction in doing just that. It was going to make me happy to put people away that made and sold drugs and destroyed lives just like mine was.edaea-author2bimage2b15

I am a Texas girl, mother of 2 amazing kiddos and married to my gorgeous soulmate for almost 20 years. I have a full time job in the medical field but hope one day to strictly write. I love to spend my free time reading, being outside and playing with my family and 4 fur babies. I am blessed to have very supportive friends and family that make my life worth living! I started to write at the instinct of “hey maybe I can do that!” and here I am. I have enjoyed every step of the journey. Every single person I hear from about my stories touches me and confirms the reason why I ventured into this insane dream of mine.

Marcy Paget worked full-time putting her husband through University. When he finally became a success, he dumped her for a trophy wife more than ten years younger, leaving Marcy to raise their four year old daughter on her own.

Even though Marcy knows she is better off alone than with a cheating husband who doesn’t love her, she is still struggling to make ends meet.

When an ethical dilemma presents itself she makes a choice – never realizing the incredible karmic chain of events that will follow her decision. . .

Forensic accountant Sloane Tobin and kooky pet psychic Willa may have the same face, but that’s the only thing these identical twins have in common.

How she can read the hearts and minds of animals has always been a mystery to Willa, and her rotten luck with men is equally baffling. Although she’s been looking for “The One” for what feels like forever (A teenage marriage to a French mime and dating a guy named Spider seemed like good ideas at the time!), optimistic Willa refuses to give up on love. When she meets Brody, the handsome rose expert hired to save her grandmother’s garden, she’s instantly smitten, but why does he keep sending her mixed signals? Does he return her feelings, or is their attraction all in her fanciful head?

Unlike her twin, Sloane has zero interest in romance. Her passion is her job, where she uses her gift for numbers to take down slimy embezzlers and asset-hiding spouses. When she’s assigned two high profile cases, Sloane feels confident the promotion she’s been angling for is within her grasp. But will her plan to climb the corporate ladder be thwarted by difficult clients, her co-worker-with-benefits, or – most surprisingly of all – her own sister? And how’s she supposed to stay focused on the drama at work when her childhood friend, Gav, moves in next door and the spark between them becomes impossible to ignore?

To get what they both want, can Willa and Sloane band together and rely on each other’s strengths? Or will their differences drive them apart once and for all?

Tracie Banister

An avid reader and writer, Tracie Banister has been scribbling stories since she was a child, most of them featuring feisty heroines with complicated love lives like her favorite fictional protagonist Scarlett O’Hara. Her work was first seen on the stage of her elementary school, where her 4th grade class performed an original holiday play that she penned. (Like all good divas-in-the-making, she also starred in and tried to direct the production.)

Tracie’s dreams of authorial success were put on the backburner when she reached adulthood and discovered that she needed a “real” job in order to pay her bills. Her career as personal assistant to a local entrepreneur lasted for 12 years. When it ended, she decided to follow her bliss and dedicate herself to writing full-time. Twin Piques is her third Chick Lit release. The pet psychic character in this novel was inspired by Tracie’s rascally rescue dogs. She’d love to know what goes on in their heads!

Relentless Rhythm (Book 4 Tempest Series) by Michelle Mankin @MichelleMankin @Brandeesbook #Review

RR-proof11

The one she really wants is out of reach! Yet another fabulous story from the great writing mind if Michelle Mankin! The sub plot is another relevant issue that plagues too many woman. April is the head bartender at The Diamond  Mine. She has a best friend Mel who works with her. I liked the Mel character simply because she was caring towards April and seemed to be accepting of her distance. Things with April are strange to say the least. There is something to love about her and the dark secrets she keeps closely guarded. I won’t scream about the angst, but I will say April’s husband has a few reveals that I was shocked about.

shocking most p186617_b_h3_aa

There is a big lead up with Dizzy and it takes place through the other books. So if you have not read the others then YES you MUST READ them and you wont be lost when you hear other names like Warren “War” . Plus they are all so delicious they need to be savored like a fine wine.

The other reveal was Mel, aka BlueBelle she was killing me! She made me have the most reaction.

A must read in the series. Don’t miss any of it

Michelle Mankin is the author of the Black Cat Records series of novels. Romance with subtext. Re-imagining classic stories with sexy rock stars and thought provoking issues. For many years she worked in the insurance industry as an underwriter. Somehow, the boredom didn’t kill her but the hours and hours of looking at facts and figures provided ample time for her mind to wander.

Black Cat Records in Vancouver provides the central backdrop for all of Michelle’s current novels. Love Evolution, Love Revolution, and Love Resolution are a Brutal Strength centered trilogy, combining the plot underpinnings of Shakespeare with the drama, excitement, and indisputable sexiness of the rock ‘n roll industry.

Things take a bit of an edgier, once upon a time turn with the Tempest series. These pierced, tatted, and troubled Seattle rockers are young and on the cusp of making it big, but with serious obstacles to overcome that may prevent them from ever getting there.

When Michelle is not prowling the streets of her Texas town listening to her rock music much too loud, she is putting her daydreams down on paper or traveling the world with her family and friends, sometimes for real, and sometimes just for pretend as she takes the children to school and back.

A woman who has everything meets a man who can offer her nothing but trouble.  They meet and oh so quickly IT happens. I loved the way the author had the sense of taboo involved here. The characters were SO captivating that book one left me thinking of the Jaylee I picture in my dreams.jaylee 29usjv6
Once again this book is just SO well written. I loved that I felt the exact same pull with the characters that I did in book 1. The Kate and Jaylee love story just leaps off the pages. For me, I felt so tortured again. If they belong together even despite all of the obstacles, then they deserve happiness. I wanted Robert to go jump off the 59th street bridge and become ocean slug food. Never did I ever think I could feel more hate towards him than I did in this book. I would totally love a few minutes to hurt him.
threat
There are times when I was yelling to Kate in my head over and over. Specifically when her and Janinie take off to Santo Domingo. That part of the book was screaming to me.
mind blown kramer-mind-blown
It was so spot on with the scenes and descriptions, making me feel like I was part of their runaway scheme. freaking out kramer-horse-bet-o
The next character that I must talk about is Ideál. He is a character that really confused me. I felt the love hate thing for him. Immediately I thought I wanted to kick him in the throat. I changed my tune and was a little more trusting towards him. When their friendship comes to be a more stable bond, there are some really big reveals. Sort of mind blowing.
mind blown 1130
PLEASE take the journey again with Kate and Jaylee. I urge you to read this series. Underneath the drama there is pure love and loyalty.

A woman who has everything meets a man who can offer her nothing but trouble.  They meet and oh so quickly IT happens. I loved the way the author had the sense of taboo involved here. The characters were well written as was the language. I loved that I felt a level of intellect when reading Kate, her husband Robert and Sarah. As for Kate’s love Jaylee, he was written superbly. His language was real, not written in a way that reflected ignorance or an uneducated person. He spoke in some slang and was also portrayed with a level of intelligence. I have read a few books that have had really bad language and when trying to decipher the characters I felt lost.
Kate Champion, a forty-two-year-old, married mother of two, leads an enviable upper class life of luxury. Jaylee Inoa is a twenty-two-year-old, second generation New York Dominican with close ties to the Heights and the gangs that run them. A very unlikely union is set up. In MY opinion Kate doesn’t recognize that her heart is with Jaylee. His love, trust, and most importantly the ways he can see their future is pivotal to my love for him. Kate gets caught up in him, there is a connection, she does things she never would have done before. Her husband Robert (whom I hate with all my heart) is a lawyer. It doesn’t take me long to see that all he wants is to win.  He is a master at staying cool. There are times when I was yelling to Kate in my head. It was so manipulating at times too hard to read.
46b03-smilescryingcry
Being a New Yorker born and raised I loved reading the scenery. I am so biased when it comes to New York based books. I enjoy the landmarks and the expressive people. There was one character Sarah, who was Kate’s college friend who was just that. She blew me away in every single scene. There were times where I loved her boldness. There were also times where I thought to myself, that is just what I would have said.
07fae-smileywow
I love to read books that have characters that I relate to, am similar to, or want to be similar to. This book has everything I love. The authors represents all sides of the characters here. She has a great feeling and caring mom in Kate. There is the element of humor and that Sarah, well she is a queen to me. I cant even speak about Jaylee cause he is so real to me. Words can not describe how his loyalty took control of my heart. The Robert character pissed me off so bad, so that is the tell tale sign of a great author!
0b0b5-bravohands
Kate grew up with a privileged family. They are so stuck up they wont even visit her in her neighborhood. She has a sister that she never sees because of the strain. Overall she is written as a very lonely woman. When she meets Jaylee it changes. She meets his family in a short amount of time so seeing the love had to hurt her, although she never said so. There is a loyalty in Washington Heights. When she learns that his father is in prison and he supports his Mom, Grandma and Sister Janinie, she falls deeper. I did too. His name is unique; Janet is his mom and Elias is his Dad so in English it is translated to Jaylee. What a perfect combination.
I urge you to read this book! It is loaded with angst, which I adore. When I got to the 90% point I was just looking at the darn Kindle. It was hard to see the ending, BUT there is a book 2 due out early this fall. Being I have a huge Dominican family and spent a lot of time in Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata I related so much more. I really want more of their type of family. Something I am more than anxious for.
So I had to search for a few songs that I think scream Jaylee to me. I also have a …

I loved it from beginning to end. The story was filled with steam so beware you will need a pot holder for those ever so hot pages! Beneath the steam lies a reveal that haunted me. A ton of corporate dealings lead a marketing genius, Mr Davis to seek an assistant and confidant, which he finds in Annabelle. She is literally a step away from an overdrawn checking account when she interviews for a job. Annabelle is a character that I adored. She has so much to offer and just graduating in this economy leaves her stalled. It is a really current issue that lends to the real reasons why I loved her.e9cf6-recommended2bhighly2bgreen

This book can draw you in using real issues that make you so much more involved.  When Annabelle interviews for an advertising and marketing job with Kalin the author creates a real life agency with real life drama. I appreciated the fact that the author doesnt hand things to you, but creates a real page turning plot.

The story was just great! I’m singing praises for Amanda Chayse. Let Mr Davis keep you warm on a chilly winter night.  There are times where you will have trust issues with all of the characters. A must read if you love romance and suspense.b5fb9-52bstar2bblog2b2bbook

I never realized how far I would go for love…until I met him.

When I interviewed for a job at Kalin Davis’s advertising firm, I didn’t think I would interview with him personally.

I sure didn’t think I would spend a night at his beach home, lying naked in his bed with his arms around me.

And I definitely didn’t think I’d end up crouched behind a bar, clutching a gun, listening to the cold steps of a killer approach me.

One betrayal leads to another, and in the end we’re both questioning who we can trust…even each other.

Synopsis

Gertie knows she doesn’t have a picture perfect life, but feels blessed with what she does have. So what if love left her heart shattered and broken? She has a great job at Simple Luxury, an apartment in Houston with her sister, Mabel, and an outspoken, no-filter, church-going Gram back in Eufaula, Oklahoma where she was raised after her parents died.

Things are going well for Gertie until the man who broke her heart shows up in Houston. Tyler knew he had made the biggest mistake of his life the night he lost Gertie, but now he is back to reclaim the woman who owns his heart. It won’t be easy though, but he is going to have to make Gertie accept the life he has now and want to be part of it. As the owner of a successful construction company, he is devoted to making Eufaula the place Gertie will want to return and to forgive him for his mistakes.

With Gram being so outspoken in her column Drama Mama in the Eufaula’s Daily Indian Journal, she doesn’t hold back with her opinions about books and the nonsense drama among authors in the book world. Gram isn’t afraid to give her opinion to Mabel and Gertie when it comes to life, either.

Will events out of their control change their future plans for everyone involved?

About The Author

L.U. Ann

She lives in Colorado with her husband and two children. Moving from the lush landscapes of Maryland’s Eastern Shore to the high desert plains of Colorado was a drastic change. She and her family moved to their own “Little House on the Prairie” at an elevation of over 6,000 feet above sea level, and a semi-arid climate that makes it hard to grow anything. While barely anything can grow where she resides now, the wildlife makes up for it. Mountain Lions, and coyotes, and rattlesnakes, oh my!

She tries to spend a little time each day writing, but domestic chores around the house usually take precedence. She would much rather hide them from her husband. She tends to her loving four-legged children who at times become much too demanding when she locks herself in the office. This often results in MORE domestic work, and she finds herself cleaning up after their deviant behavior.

She has always been an artist painting as a hobby to back drops in theatrical set designs. Graphic design is her guilty pleasure.

A Destructive Novel is a series of three books based on her life. They deal with heavy life issues and will have the reader begging for a happily ever after.

Prologue

“Thank God, I was let out of this dirty cage today. I seriously needed a break from listening to those humans cackling about this and that. I sure will miss my tail wagging friends. This human is questionable. His bright yellow pants and pink shirt are giving me a headache. Dear God, please don’t let him dress me up. Wait… Oh, no, I think I’m going to be carsick!”

~ Cujo

2008

“Gram, that seems a little risqué to me,” Mabel says handing me the rough draft of Grams weekly column. “I wonder what the people at your church think.” Mabel raises an eyebrow at Gram.

“Darling, you have to live a little. Don’t limit yourself to society’s rules. Lord knows those rules are violated every day. I’m only doing it underhandedly. And, for the love of God, don’t bring him into this. He and I have worked out an arrangement.” Gram bats her lashes. How can an old woman be conniving yet look innocent at the same time?

Damn she’s good.

Drama Queens: Call Off Your Dogs

Citizens of Eufaula, Drama Mama here, and I’m going to tell you two chewable, delicious, bone-worthy reads releasing this week.

Trenda Jacobson’s Wronged is projected to jump to the top of the charts quickly. Trenda brings in Alan Bird—a quiet man who had very few friends growing up. Not because others didn’t like him. No, he was a loner. This behavior kept him away from the real world. With little interaction with the outside world as an adult and an experimental scientist, he found his joy in pain. Not his pain, but others. The FBI has been hunting Alan for years—almost a decade—before they discover his underground lab. When the violent acts are uncovered, will the FBI agents be able to find Alan, and most importantly, will they be able to escape being next in line?

This next one is going to be a must-read. Deliberate Intentions by Renee Gilbert is best described as a modern day Romeo and Juliet—only worse. The two main characters, Mike and Lauren, are high school sweethearts. Mike is two years older, goes to a local community college so that he can stay close to his girlfriend. He makes sacrifice after sacrifice to stay with her. Problem is, she doesn’t. Lauren is brilliantly manipulating Mike as her puppet. This story looks at the problems with young-dumb love and how two teens practically escape a bright future because they are in too much of a rush to get married. Lauren does something very sneaky to seal the deal—something that has great consequences for both of them. Will they get the love and support from their families when everything becomes clear? This one is sure to touch readers of many generations.

Quickly, I would like to take a moment to thank my readers for their support and enjoyment of this unconventional column. This marks my fifty-second column as Drama Mama. For one year, I’ve created quite a stir in the reader, author, and in the publishing world—and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. I appreciate all the comments and can’t wait to see what we discover over the next fifty-two posts.

Okay, now that we’ve gotten all that out of the way. Let’s get onto the good stuff. People who you interact with on a regular basis can be compared to dogs. You know you have thought about it before. It can be a co-worker, friend, or possibly, a family member. Either way, canine behavior isn’t exclusive to its kind. Take for instance Chihuahuas. They are small and look so innocent, but the moment you piss them off, they are attacking the leg of your pants or hiking their leg on your furniture to show you who the real boss is.

These are the true bullies of the world. Why? Because the moment you stop cuddling with your pocket pet, they turn on you. Let’s have a look at the monstrous Pit bull. Their big, muscular frame has many scared to death of them. They were born with strong jaws that match their strong bodies. But guess what? They aren’t going to turn on you like those little Mexican things. No, they will lick you to death and play for hours. So, when I’m looking for someone to be in my corner, I’d rather have the one that looks vicious on the outside, but has a heart of gold as opposed to the one that looks cute and cuddly, but can turn into a biting piranha at any moment.

So there you have it. Drama Mama’s paw print. Until next week, keep your eyes open for those ankle biters and thanks for reading Drama Queens: Call Off Your Dogs.

“Gram, I’m going to college so that I can, hopefully, become a great writer and editor, but I can tell you now, I won’t be writing stuff like this. You must’ve been born with a set of balls,” I manage to say in all seriousness before looking at Mabel and we fall into a fit of giggles.

“Gertie, you will find people in this industry who are precisely like the dogs I described. It’s best you toughen up. You will encounter some who are nice to your face, become a best friend, but will talk about you behind your back and make you sound crazy. All the while, they are the crazy ones to start with. I’m trying to teach you how to cope with these Chihuahuas of the world. Your best bet is to find a Pit bull.”

My eyebrows furrow in confusion. Are people really like that?

“Sweetheart, you’re young and dumb.” My eyes grow at her harshness. “Oh, please, you know it as well. You need to go out and experience the world. Just watch out for needless drama and the back-stabbing bitches of the industry. I mean, come on, really? No one does drama like me.” Gram smiles before walking out of the room.

“We’re related to that?” Mabel whispers, watching Grams retreating form. Slowly raising my shoulders in a shrug, we glance at one another suspiciously before returning our eyes to the doorway Gram had just walked through.

“That woman is crazy,” I claim.

“No doubt,” Mabel agrees.
