The Girl I Was Before (Falling #3) by Ginger Scott @TheGingerScott #review

The Girl I was Before cover 24204235
eeb46-review2bimage2b12Please read the other books in the series before you even attempt this one. They are closure books, but out of the characters in the series I think Nate, from a previous book is the complex male character, this book has Paige. I think we FINALLY get the answers to how this scandalous character has come to be.
Scandalous_Desktop
At the first intro to Paige and her friend/enemy Chandra you are appalled at the way she throws her sister under the bus. I admit it was so hard to read the first half of this book. I was disgusted by Paige and her need to fit in with the sorority. Thinking that Chandra was on a pedestal was outrageous. So, moving on…I will say that Houston’s character had a really unique story. There is a lot that happens to finally put the tiny pieces together for Houston.

Puzzle-Pieces

I really found the backstory of Paige the most fascinating because, like I said it helps to get to the rotten roots and evil personality. Do I hate her? not anymore. I liked her twin sister so much more than I could ever have imagined. There is a tale of forgiveness here. Overall I think the evil Paige may just be the bruise in your apple, ya know the one you cut out and eat the rest? That one, yeah maybe she is even a little juicy.

one-bad-apple-makes-the-barrel-bad-300x295

Lastly there are a few minor characters that I needed to balance out the evil. Thankfully I liked Houston’s Mom, the best friend and sorta simple Casey, and lastly Leah. I want to add that I loved Chandra. Yeah I know the nemesis is to be hated and I did hate her but I loved to hate her. She is THE one that you love to hate. I think weaving a character as complex as Chandra was not easy, so therefore I appreciate the evil **^*#* even more!

An Ordinary Me by Brooklyn Taylor @authorbrooklynt @SNS_BAH

ordinary me Front Cover

From the outside looking in Garrison Davis seems like every other senior in high school. On the inside though, he’s an emotional wreck promising to not love anyone. He chooses to protect himself by vowing solitude. His dad is in prison for dealing drugs; his mother is a recovering addict and an emotional mess. The only thing that brings him joy is playing the drums and that feeling of being needed by his band. It is his escape, his passion. No one gets hurt or disappointed.  That is until he lays his eyes on Reese at school. She is the exact example of what he cannot let himself get involved in. He would do nothing but drag her down with him.

“I want to tell her and show her how much I love her. I had loved her from the first time I spotted her in that courtyard smiling but I can’t, I won’t. She deserves so much more than I can offer. I’m the spawn of a drug dealer and an addict. I have never let myself love another person and now…  I love her so much it hurts.”

Reese Owens is the exact opposite of Garrison. Inside she’s beaming; growing up in a happy home and on the outside she was a duck out of water. Her parents are the over protective set but are finally loosening the jail bars. Sophomore year in high school, she has never dated a boy and is envious of the social life her best friend Autumn Welch has. She meets Garrison and is instantly attracted to him. He pulls away when she pushes in. A whole new world opens up to Reese and she finds herself falling into situations she can’t get herself out of. Making bad decision after bad decision, she finds out the hard way on how life is full of choices.  The one thing she wants more than anything is Garrison’s attention which she doesn’t get in return.

“How is it possible to love someone and keep it quiet? Never to utter those very words knowing he doesn’t feel the same way. I finally fall in love and he only wants to be friends. He is everything I have always wanted and he keeps me at a distance making sure we don’t get too close. How can I ignore my feelings and act like I don’t have them when we are around each other? How do I resist the urge to move my lips towards his when he is talking to me?”

Garrison realizes he has to be honest with Reese and tell her how he really feels before he loses her for good. Just maybe, he will get love in return for the first time in his life. When he finally convinces himself to come forth, a life changing event occurs that could take away the only person in his life that truly loves him.

Is it too late? Does he get the chance to tell her? And when he confesses does it matter?

Morning after morning, I wake myself up. I don’t have the normal mother or father to tell me to have a good day or make me breakfast. Sure I’m a senior in high school, but I’ve never had that. Even in elementary I took care of myself. My dad was dealing heavy drugs at the time and when he wasn’t dealing he was high or sleeping. Mom had tried several times to stay drug free but wasn’t successful with it. My dad wanted her just like him, destroyed. I have never really known what it was like to have parents that care. They didn’t understand why I hated the life we lived. More times than not they voiced their frustration that I thought I was better than them.

I listened to people talk about how their parents were annoying and watched them like hawks. They had to lie to do things they wanted to do when caring parents would try to provide them a net, so they wouldn’t get hurt, something that was only a dream for me. I yearned for that and knew I was never going to get it. I saw things I shouldn’t have seen but all it did was make me want to strive even more to make it, to get away from it. I was going to make it, and I was going to be nothing like my parents.

My evenings were pretty identical to my mornings. I did my homework, drummed with the band and then made myself something to eat. Mom worked at a hotel in housekeeping and when she was home she was either sleeping or sitting in her room in silence. I don’t know if she knew if I was dead or alive half the time nor would she have cared. Well that’s not true. If I was dead Aunt Ellen wouldn’t be paying our bills.

This is my senior year and all of my friends were going to be hanging out, partying, and having a good time, while I was just going to be living my life. It was a vicious cycle, and I was willing to do it because I knew I would survive it all. I was going to go to college and do the one thing that would piss my parents off the most and I would have full satisfaction in doing just that. It was going to make me happy to put people away that made and sold drugs and destroyed lives just like mine was.edaea-author2bimage2b15

Hendrix (Caldwell Brothers #1) by Chelsea Camaron and M.J. Fields @ChelseaCamaron @mjfieldsbooks #Review

“One bourbon, one shot, one night—that’s my world. Life is finally getting on track for me and my brothers. Things are far from perfect, but after removing the thorn from our sides, they damn sure are looking up.” –Hendrix Caldwell.

Hendrix Caldwell, is the oldest of the Caldwell brothers. He seemed to be stable brother from the beginning of the book. Being one of three, he is obviously the standout leader of the entire family. The other brothers better get their stories fast.

Then my absolute dream lover, Jared Caldwell enters the bar. WOW I really want him to get a story. He is a man of few words that tells deep jokes. I am in love with his character.

57fac-im2bso2binto2bu_nwra8rz6

Then the drama with Olivia. Where do I begin? The obvious humor in her character or the way I knew she was going to get Hendrix? Either way it dont matter much. I liked her and her work ethic. If I worked a bar and gave away more liquor than I should have, over poured, dropped glasses and spilled drinks I would hide and never come out, but not Olivia.

What happens when two worlds collide not once, but twice? WOW

smiley wow

There are so many books I want from this series. I am pleasantly surprised by MJ Fields and I have never read her books. Now I NEED to as soon as I can.

synopsis image 12

“One bourbon, one shot, one night—that’s my world. Life is finally getting on track for me and my brothers. Things are far from perfect, but after removing the thorn from our sides, they damn sure are looking up.” –Hendrix Caldwell.

Hendrix Caldwell, the oldest of the Caldwell brothers, is the ever steady voice of reason out of the three Detroit—Rock City’s—wild boys. Focused, determined, and living with a chip on his shoulder, Hendrix is married to his bar, allowing no time for anything more than a casual hook up. Work hard, play harder—that is the Caldwell brothers’ way.

For Olivia Hemmingway, life is nothing except the school of hard knocks. Born as the consequence of a one night stand, Olivia didn’t have the childhood found in movies and books. However, she’s all grown up now and completely on her own. Drowning in debt, she is looking for a small break in life, but the hits just keep on coming.

One night, one charity event, two masks hiding them from the world and each other… Two people let go and share the best of each other in a luxury hotel’s storage closet for one night they both can’t forget. One night they both revisit in their dreams.

What happens when two worlds collide not once, but twice? When they find out who was behind the mask, will sparks fly, or will their past demons keep them apart?

From Best Selling Authors Chelsea Camaron and Jessie Lane…

She’s an investment banker.
He’s an outlaw biker.
A little bit of heaven is about to meet a whole lot of hell.

Morgan Powell is THE perfect daughter, worker and sister. These authors are great and I am a fan of them both so I wanted to see if I could tell who wrote what, and I think, being the super-fan I am, can tell who wrote what parts. The MC genre needed a different take on things, and this one delivers. The Regulator MC is not typical n the genre, they are an elite group. I wont say what they do or their purpose, but it is different.

plot 3

The main character Morgan give me a lot to look forward to. I know her and her sisters have staying power. Now moving on to Brett “Ice” Grady well he is a military man who has a great story.

Sappy_Fest_Logo

Dont miss his past, it is too good. His Mom and his daughter are written in a way making them perfect compliments that give his story more meaning.

moving on fsWX1rxp0iwo1_500 Along with Ice we meet a few players like Coal and Hammer. I clearly know Jessie Lane is behind these guys. She writes special ops and military men so well. There is a part of Coal that I love. He is dark and dangerous so I want more of him. I HATE spoilers so I will only say Chapter 18 was the best in the book. It was super dark and gritty and I am a fan of dark and gritty.

When the friendship between Ice’s daughter Brooke and Morgan’s sister Madyson is the set up for the meeting between the two. Yes there is a love underneath both of the main characters but the story of the Cuban mafia lord Sandoval was what got me totally hooked. I loved how Chelsea wrote a mob story in her MC books so this was a treat.

As for the sub plot characters, there is drama in Morgan’s family sweettreatstree. Gosh shake that tree and make them rotten apples fall of.  Morgan her sister Madyson and Mallory  was raised to be perfect, to say that the only one who lives up to the standards is Morgan.

Two worlds do collide in a very interesting way. Fans of MC books, contemporary romance and romantic suspense will enjoy this one. I say it is a must read!

Excerpt

Lost in thought, trying to remember my dad’s damn list, I am not paying attention to anything around me while stopping at the bags of salad. I don’t look up as I push my cart in front of me so I can lean down to grab the right one. I feel the cart bump something and hear a slight whimper.

Looking up, I smile at the woman in front of me as she turns around to face me. Whoa, I didn’t expect the anger she has going on over an accidental bump.

“Slick, watch out, why don’t ya? I’m sure this little ploy of yours works on every other chick, but not me, okay? So think about that next time.”

“Slick, huh? Well, my friends call me Tappper, but whatever. I’m sorry. It really was an accident, not some ploy.” I say, lifting up the bag of mixed greens so she can see I was getting something.

“Apology accepted. Moving on. Have a good day, Mr. Tapper.” She smiles and it hits me who she is.

She pushes at her cart, and I hear her mutter, “Appropriate name, Tapper. Humph.”

“Kenzy,” I call out to her back as she strolls away from me.

Her gorgeous, dark hair swings around her as she turns back to face me, Confusion etches her features, and I realize she doesn’t recognize me.

“Maverick,” I say, introducing myself.

“Oh my, you’re … um … dirty,” she says, covering her mouth in embarrassment of her unfiltered response.

“Baby, you have no idea,” I reply with a smile and a wink. “You look good, Kenzy. It’s been a long damn time.”

“Y-yeah.” Composing herself, she smiles finally. “I just moved back.”

“Good, I’ll see ya around, then.”

“Sure thing.” She turns back to her cart and heads off to finish her shopping, her ass swaying with each step.

I can’t help wanting to take my hand to that ass and make it a nice shade of pink. Kenzy has certainly grown into a beautiful woman from her awkward teenage years. She had an innocent yet definitely rough beauty in her youth, one that you had to see past the outer appearance to the heart of the girl. Now she is carrying herself in a refined but shy way. I don’t think she realizes how gorgeous she is.

HEART SONG by Samantha LaFantasie #excerpt @GCReading @SamLaFantasie

Title: Heart Song

Author: Samantha LaFantasie

Genre: New Adult, Paranormal Romance

There once was a world filled with magic and immortals. To protect the immortals the world was torn into two realms, one of mortals and one of magic.

For centuries Jiren has been one of the leaders of the immortal realm, but his power is now put at risk when it is said that the heart song between a mortal, Relena, and a werewolf, Marren is fated to bring both the mortal and immortal realms together once again before the world is forever shrouded in darkness.

The shape-shifting, ethereal vampire, Jiren, will stop at nothing to prevent the realms from rejoining, even killing another Ancient—the most unforgivable crime.

In addition, Relena and Marren are put through one of the greatest tests of their relationship just to prove their love for one another, putting the future of both realms in jeopardy; solely to appease the other Ancient rulers of the immortal realm.

With both realms doomed if they are not together, will Marren and Relena be able to prove their heart song or will Jiren have his way and throw the world into complete devastation?

I woke from a fitful sleep with a loud clap of thunder that shook the room. I sat up, struggling to catch my
breath, when I saw someone at the foot of the bed. “Marren?”
“I’m here.”
“What are you doing at the foot of my bed?” I said, impatient and still angry.
“I want you to see me . . . what I am,” he replied as if he was surrendering to something he didn’t want to do.
My heart raced. Questions and warnings rang in the back of my mind. One thing overwhelmed them all. Need. A need to know, a need to see, a need to keep him with me because I was too proud to admit I was too scared to be alone.
I moved slowly, crawling on top of the blankets and to the edge of the bed. I stood on my knees and took deep breaths to calm myself as lightning and thunder crashed and rain pelted the stone balcony. I reached with trembling hands and pulled the sheers apart slowly. Marren stood on the other side of the bench, patiently waiting for my reaction. He stood perfectly still,
like a statue belonging in the ballroom with the other races, long fallen into myth and legend. Lighting flashed across his face, and I realized why he was so afraid.
I froze. Partly in terror and partly in awe. “You’re a werewolf.”
“Are you afraid of me?” he asked with uncertainty.
Of course, I was afraid. It wouldn’t be natural otherwise. I couldn’t tell him that. “No. More like . . . mesmerized.”
I leaned over the bench, reached out my hand and touched his face. Soft and smooth skin returned my touch, just as with the human part of him. My fingers traced the changes, moving over the rises and falls of his features. Goosebumps rose on my arms and trickled down my spine. Another flash of lightning shone on his face, his eyes were closed.
“You’re beautiful,” I whispered.
“You—you don’t think I’m a monster?”
I laughed under my breath. “How could I?”
“This is what I am. If living a life with me is what you really want, you will need to eventually make the change as well,” his words
echoed soundlessly through my mind, as well as the urgency within them.
I dropped my hand and sat back on my legs. “Before I can
think about that, give me some answers.”
He nodded slowly.
“How old are you?”
“Old enough to have seen the changes in this world,” he
spoke with sadness in his words.
“Does that mean you will live forever?”
“Theoretically, yes.”
“So if I decide not to make the change, then . . .”
“It will kill me when you eventually die.”
“Why would my death kill you?” I fought a losing battle. Instead of getting answers, I found more questions.
His mouth opened as if he was going to answer, but then he closed it, looking out the window. Worry creased his brow.
I tried a different approach, “Is that the decision you warned me of?”
“I wouldn’t want you to rush into something like this. It takes time. With the company that’s coming, you’ll need to make that decision sooner than I had hoped.”
I climbed atop the bench and then stepped to the floor to stand in front of him; my knees were stiff from sitting on them. “When?”
“The decision will need to be made by tomorrow night.”
“What happens if I say no?”
“I would rather not think about that but considered that a possibility.”
“And?” I asked. “I’m hoping you won’t,” he said.
“Why is it important to you for me to say yes?” “Because, my world was never complete until you were a part of it, and you are my heart song.”
My mind emptied of everything. Every question, every thought and argument, even logic left my mind. Not once did I expect to hear words like his. I was never anything to anyone. My own father didn’t even want me, and yet, Marren did. The whirlwind of my life seemed less chaotic with him. He calmed the destructive force that claimed so much of me, and when I thought about not having him around, my heart hurt. I’ve always been told persistence wins over patience. I didn’t realize how true that was until now.
My decision was made. I lifted my hands to his chest, his heart thumped against my touch. I inched close enough for his breath to blow over my neck and shoulders. His lips pressed into my forehead, but I could tell he was holding back. I slid my hands around his neck and pulled his lips to mine. Fire pulsed through my veins, setting every nerve ending ablaze. Everywhere his hands touched, tingled like tiny bolts of lightning. Slowly, his arms wrapped around me as our kiss deepened. My feet left the floor as he carried me to the side of the bed, lying me down. His mouth traced the edge of my jaw and the length of
my neck. He pulled away, letting his breath flow over my skin in warm waves.
“Are you sure this is what you want?”
“Yes.”

Rico JonesI am an addict. I’m addicted to drugs, alcohol, and pussy. There has been only one drug that has ever made me feel this high, this invincible, and this… free. It’s a feeling I promised myself I’d never let myself feel again, but that was before she walked into my life.

She’s worth adding another addiction to my list, even at the expense of my heart.

Riley Andrews

I’m a cold-hearted bitch¬¬—at least that’s what I’ve been told over and over again by my ex-fiancé. The truth is I’m just a little scared, a lot lost, and broken beyond repair. I don’t have the option of breaking down though. People are counting on me to help them overcome their own pasts and fears. To save them.

But, when my past threatens to destroy me, and my future threatens to disappear I’m the one that needs to be saved.

Is it possible for one person to ruin you and save you at the same time?

This is the thrid and final book in the Triumph Series. It may be read as a standalone, however it makes for a more complete story if the prior two books are read first.
