The Runaway Year by Shani Struthers @shani_struthers @Tale_of_Reviews #review

Book Review:

Dumped by her hotshot boyfriend and boss, Layla Lewis quits her job and heads to Trecastle to house-sit for a friend. The fact that she had a boyfriend who was a loser and messed around wasn’t bad enough but, he was her boss! Her BFF Hannah is a bartender and she takes up with her and helping at her bar/restaurant. From a totally classic chick-lit drama filled book emerges a femme hero in Layla and Hannah. These girls were the total package to me.

With the girls come Joe, Penny and Richard. Now for Penny and Richard, that part of the book was in my opinion the best. It has to be read and enjoyed the way I did.  I felt like Penny made a boo boo, a little slip up and Richard was over the top. I didn’t like how he treated her and how her own self punishment seemed to go on and on. Poor Penny. I think she should have lied, but that is just me.

I really enjoyed it and I loved the fact that there were usual and typical slang words. They were NOT over used and it will translate well here in the states as for any chick lit lover from the UK and London as well. That is important. I have seen too many reviews get a little off because of the punctuation and slang.

So add this one to the “beach reach” list for sure!

About the Author

One of those rare creatures—a true Brightonian—Shani was born and bred in the sunny seaside town of Brighton on the UK’s south-coast. One of the first literary conundrums she had to deal with was her own name: Shani can be pronounced in a variety of ways, but in this instance, it’s Shay-nee not Shar-ney or Shan-ni, although she does indeed know a Shanni—just to confuse matters further! Hobbies include reading, writing, eating, and drinking—all four of which keep her busy enough. After graduating from Sussex University with a degree in English and American Literature, Shani landed a job at a well-known holiday company. Although employed as a Brochure Production Executive, she promptly reinvented herself as a Copywriter, a new position they were happy (if a tad bewildered) to concede to. At twenty-four, Shani became a freelance copywriter and has been one ever since, in-between writing novels, that is. Contemporary romance The Runaway Year is her first book and set between Brighton and North Cornwall, the latter a home-from-home for Shani, her husband, and three lovely kids. She also has a penchant for Glastonbury, another magical place, and don’t even get her started on Scotland—we’d be here all day!

Losing Francesca

By J. A. Huss

Expected Publication: July 1, 2013

Genre: Mature Young Adult Contemporary Romance

Francesca Sabatini came to America to take in the sights, celebrate her high school graduation, and have fun wasting time before college starts in the fall.

That’s not what happens.

Fresh off the plane and barely on American soil more than a handful of minutes, Francesca’s face is recognized by TSA scanners to be a match for a child who was kidnapped twelve years ago.

Brody Mason remembers the day Fiona Sullivan went missing during a family vacation in Italy and it’s haunted him his whole life. So when Francesca shows up at the Sullivan farm down the road, he’s compelled to figure out if this girl really is his long lost friend.

But Francesca knows she’s not Fiona Sullivan. She knows exactly who she is. At least she thinks she knows – until Brody Mason relentlessly pursues her and she begins to have feelings for him. Maybe being Fiona isn’t so bad?

Reality becomes blurred, secrets are revealed, and life will never be the same when the final questions are answered: Is she Francesca or Fiona? And where does she really belong?

Losing Francesca is a YA/NA crossover contemporary romance

I lie back on the beach and put my hands behind my head. “So, we’re gonna spend the whole summer hanging out and I’m not allowed to get to know you even in the most basic and simple ways? Is that how this is gonna go, Fee?”

She lies back next to me and turns on her side, her eyes searching mine. “Why do you insist that I am her? I’m not her, Brody. This fact will hurt you if you don’t accept it and I don’t want to hurt you. You’re nice, I like you, but I’m not that girl.”

“I want you to be her.” I tell her truthfully. “I so, so want you to be her, Francesca. I cannot even explain how much I want to talk to her again. How much I want to tell her about all the days we never shared, to tell her that I thought of her at the end of every single one of them and that I prayed to God for years, every night, on my fucking knees, that she’d come back. I want to give her the Fruit Roll-Up I brought to school that first day back after summer vacation. That stupid Fruit Roll-Up that I still have hidden away, because I had this faith as a kid. This unwavering faith that only a kid can have that one day my friend would be back. And when she finally showed up, I’d give her that stupid snack to show her how much I missed her. And to prove myself to her. Because that little girl was my soulmate.”

She frowns so deep it makes me hold my breath.

“I’m sorry,” I say, turning my head to stare up at the sky. “I shouldn’t tell you this stuff, I’m sorry.” I’m projecting, that’s what I’m doing. I want Francesca to be my Fee so bad I’m starting to believe it myself, even as she sits here and tells me straight up she’s not her.

Her hand touches my cheek and I look back over.

“You can ask me one question, but it can’t be about my other life.”

I laugh. “What good does that do me?”

“Well, you can ask about things, but not my family, or school, or the places I’ve lived.”

“Give me a for example, because I’m not seeing the difference.”

She sighs and turns away, biting on her thumbnail a little. “OK,” she says, turning back. “For example, I’ll ask you the first question and you answer, then I’ll answer the same question for you.”

I smile.

She chews on her bottom lip this time. Clearly she is nervous. “All right, tell me about the best day of your life.”

I sit up and stare down at her. “The best day of my life?”

She nods.

“Today, Fee. The best day of my life is today.”

5 ★★★★★ Review of Billi Tiner’s Dogs Aren’t Men

Dr. Rebecca Miller is a gifted veterinarian, leading a happy and fulfilling life at her veterinary clinic. Her Golden Retriever, Captain, is her constant and only companion, and she doesn’t see the need for any men in her life. She believes that having crossed the Rubicon of thirty, her odds aren’t that great anyway. However, her mother has other plans. She wants grandchildren.
Rebecca runs (literally) into Derrick on a basketball court, and she feels a strange attraction to the tanned and handsome ER doctor.
Coincidentally, Rebecca’s mom sets up a blind date for Rebecca originally intended to be with Derrick. It goes haywire and she winds up with Derrick’s best friend, Mitch, on a double date. Unfortunately, Derrick has shown up with a stunning blonde and this does nothing to make Rebecca think she has a chance with Derrick.
Rebecca is an independent, tough, and intelligent heroine. And the rest of the other characters are written with a depth and realism that makes you really care about their lives. The interaction and chemistry was great, and the dialogue terrific.
Being an animal lover, I enjoyed the realistic depiction of veterinary life, especially after I discovered that the author is herself a veterinarian.
I also liked the quick pace of this story. Ms. Tiner keeps it moving and doesn’t get caught up in lengthy filler paragraphs that you’ll find in other books.

A fun read. Highly recommend.

A Night to Forget is the first book in the two-book series, Emma’s Story. The second book in this series, The Day to Remember is scheduled to be released in 2013.

What happens in Cancun doesn’t always stay in Cancun.

When Emma Anderson and her friends decided to spend their senior year Spring Break in Cancun, she expected some crazy memories to end their final college days. What Emma didn’t expect was to meet Brandon Fisher. Tall and sexy, with dimples that would make any girl swoon, Brandon Fisher was literally the man of Emma’s dreams. She couldn’t quite believe that this stranger, who seduced her every night in her dreams, actually existed.

After serendipitously bumping into each other, Emma could not resist Brandon’s pull and spent an unforgettable night with him. Passing it off as a spring break fling, Emma never expected to see Brandon again. But when she started her first day at her new job a few months later, there he was. The only problem was, Brandon didn’t even remember her.

About this author

Jessica Wood writes new adult contemporary romance and chick-lit.

While she has lived in countless cities throughout the U.S., her heart belongs to San Francisco. To her, there’s something seductively romantic about the Golden Gate Bridge, the steep rolling hills of the city streets, the cable cars, and the Victorian-style architecture.

She loves a strong, masculine man with a witty personality. While she is headstrong and extremely independent, she can’t resist a man who takes control of the relationship, both outside and inside of the bedroom.

She loves to travel internationally, and tries to plan a yearly trip abroad. She also loves to cook and bake, and—to the benefit of her friends—she loves to share. She also enjoys ceramics and being creative with her hands. She has a weakness for good (maybe bad) TV shows; she’s up-to-date on over 25 current shows, and no, that wasn’t a joke.

And it goes without saying, she loves books—they’re like old and dear friends who have always been there to make her laugh and make her cry.

The one thing she wished she had more of is time.

First Kiss by Ann Marie Frohoff @rockinwriterchk #spotlight #video #officialtrailer

The Author extraordinaire:

ann marie frohoff 5211881

Ann Marie (“Annie”) Frohoff grew up in sunny Southern California. As a teen and young adult she spent her time frequenting and living in nearly every beachside city up and down the coast. She settled in Hollywood at 19 working in film and TV. Soon her itch to keep moving took over again, taking her to Hawaii for a time and then back to LA.

She’s now settled in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Her wanderlust and propensity to live life out loud has brought her many life experiences so many of us only dream about. Always the storyteller, it would be of no surprise to those who grew up with Annie, that she made the transition into a book and screenplay author. You could say that she woke up one day and had an epiphany, deciding to go to school for screenwriting. It’s with this inner fire she set out to write her first screenplay. Soon after, such work made it into the hands of an agency creative executive who challenged her to write a novel to support the complex ensemble cast of characters she’d created. Thus, after only a couple of years and many hours on the road immersing herself in her subject matter; her edgy modern day “Walk The Line meets John Hughes Classics” debut novella, SKID OUT, has been completed, along with the first installment in her Trilogy. SKID OUT is the prequel novella to the HEAVY INFLUENCE TRILOGY.

The first installment in her Heavy Influence Trilogy, FIRST KISS, is set to release June 11th 2013 — The series is a story about young, reckless love between a rising rock star and his younger muse, spanning 10 years of their tumultuous and passionate relationship. Each book in the Trilogy will come with a soundtrack of original music, of which the lyrics will appear in the pages of the books. (Alternative Rock Genre).

Annie has now also delved into the supernatural fantasy world with her writing partners Shaun Barger and songwriter/musician Matthew Reich. Taking inspiration directly from song lyrics and building an entire realm of vastly complex characters and plot lines; weaving history, fantasy and heavy doses of romance together. You will be kept turning the pages of “The Zodiac Wars: My Gemini” novellas and “Precious Metal: The Prince and the Gypsy” book series. Both series of books are currently in development.

Hers to Command (Verdantia #1) by Patricia A. Knight @patriciaaknight #debut #spotlight

Hers to Command (Verdantia, #1)

For some, existence without their mate might seem like the end of their world–for the members of Verdantia’s Tetriarch, it would be.

Love triangles often create disastrous relationships, but the unlikely members of the Tetriarch face worldwide disaster without the successful bonding of their trio. The inhabitants of the sentient planet, Verdantia, are poised on the precipice of extinction following a brutal invasion by an off-world, nomadic horde. Verdantia’s capital, Sylvan Mintoth, must have its failing energy shield restored, or the planet is doomed. The Elders know the shield can draw energy from only one thing—a very arduous and grueling coupling of two specific people who were pre-chosen by the planet Herself and promised by prearranged marriage contract.

Conte Camliel Aristos deTano, Ari, has long spurned the marriage forced upon him. His contractual bride, Princess Fleur Constante, is the beautiful future queen. She was but six years old when the contract was signed. Though young and inexperienced, she is willing to risk everything, including her own sanity, to save her planet.

Verdantia draws strength from the duo, but the sentient planet whispers to Ari that a third is necessary – Ari’s aide de camp, Visconte Doral deLorion, an angelically handsome, skilled assassin who silently surrendered his heart to Ari long ago.

The trio struggles to make this surprising partnership harmonious, pushing through pride, scars of past abuse, fears of inexperience and distrust. To save Verdantia, they must overcome their individual weaknesses and realize their full potential.

Only the tetriarch and their combined synergy, can harness Verdantia’s immense power to shield its citizens from invasion.(

Love and the Punk Rock Grrl by K.H. Alynn

love and the punk rock grrl 17789262

Book Description
Publication Date: April 7, 2013
It’s 1982, and 17-year-old Rudi Weiss is a tough girl living in the tougher streets of Irvington, NJ–with her life centered around alienation, drugs, and punk rock.

Though this changes when she’s caught selling pot and given a choice: either spend the rest of her childhood in juvenile detention or move in with an ex-Marine and his family in the nearby affluent suburb of Maplewood.

There at the local high school, the wild and free-thinking Rudi disrupts the entire established order. And she especially disrupts Tommy Goodwin, a rich and popular preppy who’s seemingly her opposite.

But underneath their veneers, they are much the same–two lost souls desperately in search of something. And when they find it, it explodes everything around them.

Something that’s only exasperated when Rudi’s past catches up with them, in this magical and bittersweet tale of unexpected love.

Available exclusively at Amazon, Love and the Punk Rock Grrl is the first in a series of books about a larger-than-life woman with lots of attitude, and even more soul.

4 half star blog book

Review:

I am never critical to an extreme so I get a pass on this one I think anyways. The book surprised me and it was good. It was the cover. If I was back in the day at a book store and saw the cover I dont think I would even look at the cover to see what it was about. That makes me sad. This needs some marketing and it will be pretty popular.

The premise that starts with Rudi and drugs is pretty good too. Rudi, a female punk rock chick gets arrested for selling drugs to an undercover cop. Growing up in this era it was a draw for me. I won’t go and give you a mini book here. I will say that the arrest is a change in Rudi’s path. The consequences and punishment cause a chain reaction of gossip, ridicule, and her own self doubt. Of course when you read it you will understand the choice she makes cause way too much doubt and constantly thinking “what if”.

The interest in Tommy is cool too. He is different and persistent to say the least. I guess it is sort of the bad girl appeal at first. I wonder if that was a draw for me too.

I am thrilled I read it and hope to see more from this author!
