The book starts after the tragic loss of Miles Cole, Audra’s husband. It is a sad story because of how he dies. I wont spoil it, but it was a shocker. The characters are different in the fact that they are a little older, Audra is 35 and a professor. She has a lot of life to live and she is in that transitional stage of grief.  She is not a shut in, she goes about life and sort of just exists. I was glad that the author didnt create a great depression out of this character. She has some great friends that aid in trying to balance out her grieving process.   The book starts with Audra on the cusp of healing from the loss of her husband Miles.sad-quotes-with-images

I liked Audra and of course Jace and Jackson, her children. Now, there is her best friend Quinn who was comic relief for me. Audra has a nickname for Quinn; she calls her “hooker”. Not ideal, but for Quinn I think it fits well. I laughed anyway and that is all that matters.  It was good to have a funny and light character to balance both Audra and Brecken. When the girls go out she runs into Brecken and it turns out he took one of her classes. He is a few years younger, but lucky for me nothing huge. I am glad he was self-sufficient.

Audra was a professor but that aspect of her life wasn’t really spoken about much. She wasn’t an old English professor reading Hamlet so for that I was thankful. She was the perfect blending of smart, sexy and well read. It was an enjoyable read that made me smile even though grief was the main subject.

SAD letters

Brecken comes to give an estimate for work to be done on Audra’s house. I was sort of glad that she was doing a little remodel, I think it was helping the healing process. So hottie Brecken enters to give an estimate. Great story there. Some pretty  emotional parts, making it worth the read! The end of the book meant the end! Another book completed, no series or cliffhanger. There was yummy steamy scenes too.

The Manhattan Puzzle Excerpt

1

‘Go for it. The rougher the better, girl.’ The man had a black silk blindfold tied around his head. He spoke slowly, his voice thick with desire.

Xena went to the door and unlocked it.

‘What’s that? Getting your toys out? Wow, this is even better than you promised.’

Lord Bidoner walked into the panic room. He closed the door behind him and pressed the button to turn on the air management system. The scrubber in the roof could remove the smoke from a blazing fire and turn the output into a vapour trail.

The man, spread-eagled and handcuffed to the stainless steel bed frame, had an expectant smile on his face.

‘Go on, do it,’ he said.

The navy Calvin Klein silk suit hanging from the stool beside the bed gave an indication of who he was. Lord Bidoner examined the man’s wallet. His bank ID card, a credit-card-sized piece of aluminium with an embedded proximity chip and his family name, Hare, embossed on it, confirmed what they already knew.

The head of global security at BXH, one of the world’s few truly global banks, was lying face-up and naked in front of him.

‘Don’t keep me waiting, girl.’

‘I won’t,’ purred Xena. She stroked his leg, then his inner thigh. He quivered in anticipation.

The man’s wife would surely appreciate photographs of this event, but Lord Bidoner had more pressing concerns.

He nodded at Xena.

She was dressed in a low-cut skin-tight black catsuit that fitted her thin frame perfectly. The man laid out in front of them was expecting something memorable from the woman he’d met in the champagne bar opposite Grand Central, two weeks before. Xena’s story, about being an Ethiopian diplomat’s daughter, and her eager smile, had captivated him.

She ran her finger down the man’s stomach. It trembled under her touch.

‘Don’t stop, honey. Don’t stop.’

With her other hand Xena clicked on the silver Turboflame blowtorch, the most expensive model in the world with its 1500C flame. She held the gently hissing blue, inch-long flame up and watched it glow brighter as her fingers moved slowly down his stomach.

‘What’s that?’ he said.

She didn’t reply.

Hare’s voice was still confident when he spoke. ‘Was that your sister who just came in? Is she gonna join us?’

‘We have a surprise for you,’ said Xena.

The man pulled on the handcuffs, which began to cut into his skin. It had taken a bit of persuasion, since this was their third meeting, for Xena to get him to go this far, but he trusted her now. And he’d made it clear that he wasn’t going to put up with any crap. He’d break the bed if she didn’t release him when he gave the password.

She’d smiled, hugged him and agreed.

They’d even laughed about making a written contract.

‘What’s the surprise?’ He shook the bed, testing its resilience and the strength of the handcuffs. He’d assumed they were easily breakable toys, like a previous pair she’d shown him. But he was wrong.

And he didn’t know that the bed was bolted to the reinforced slab of the panic room floor, either. Though he might have guessed that there was something wrong when it refused to move under him.

‘Just a friend of mine. We have a little question for you,’ said Xena.

‘Yeah?’ He was still curious, still expectant of further delights.

‘What is the password for the security system at BXH?’

The man didn’t reply verbally. He shook the bed from side to side, trying to break free. He didn’t know that his only hope was if his thrashing managed to separate his hands from his wrists, and his feet from his ankles. And very few people have strength enough to do that.

Xena waved the blue flame, raised it, as if offering it up. It flickered higher.

The odour of the burning butane gas filled the room like bad perfume. The sound of the blow torch was a threatening hissing now. Xena placed the tip of the flame against the top edge of the whiskey tumbler the man had been drinking from. The glass turned blue.

‘Wait until you feel this. Then you will tell me,’ said Xena. Her tone had changed. It was demanding now.

‘What? Fu . . .’ The end of that confident word was bitten off by the piercing scream that came from deep within his throat. Xena had touched the flame against the pale skin of his shoulder.

He began thrashing. Like a fish flailing. He moved from side to side, squirming away from the skin-blistering heat. But he couldn’t move fast enough. And his legs and arms were stretched out tight.

Easy targets.

The smell in the room changed and the atmosphere with it. Pain and whimpering, sizzling and guttural roars filled the air.

The man had become a dog.

Then Xena asked him again.

‘The password, please.’ She spoke softly, as if they were still playing a game.

‘If you give it up, I will release you. You can explain these little burns to your wife. But the ones I will inflict next will require hospital treatment. Or the services of a morgue.’ She clicked the flame off, then pressed the hot tip hard and fast into the biggest blister she had inflicted, near his ankle.

‘What do you say, Mr Hare?’

The man answered with a defiant, animal roar. He shook the bed under him. The last vestige of his pride in working at BXH bellowed out of him.

Xena lit the flame again. She reached forward, touched it to his chest, and ran it fast down the middle until smoke from his burning body hair filled the room with a sickly odour.

‘Stop, stop!’ he screamed. His body squirmed to escape the heat.

‘It’s #89*99,’ he shouted. ‘Please! Stop!’

Bidoner keyed the password into his phone and pressed send.

‘I hope you’re not lying,’ said Xena. ‘I want all this to have a happy ending.’

She squeezed his thigh with her hand, then stroked it.

Tears streamed from under his blindfold. His cheeks were red. It was good he couldn’t see the weals on his body, because he would know immediately that he wouldn’t be able to explain any of them to his wife.

‘Please, let me go. I promise not to tell anyone. I swear, on my children’s lives.’

Lord Bidoner’s mobile beeped as an incoming message came in. He nodded at Xena. The code had worked.

‘I believe you,’ she said. ‘But there is one more thing I must do for you.’

She put the Turboflame down and went to the fridge. She took out a six-inch-long serrated knife, honed with care to a perfect blade, from the freezer section.

She held it in the air, admiring its cold edge.

‘Now you will find release,’ she said.

The man’s body went still. His toes, which had scrunched up, half straightened. The only sound was his pain-filled whimpering.

The panic room in the apartment on Fifth Avenue, overlooking the skyscrapers of Manhattan, was soundproof. It was why they used the room.

Xena flicked the blade across the man’s pale skin, once, then twice, fascinated by how quickly blood gushed, how fast it flowed from a few simple cuts.

‘This is for my brothers,’ she said.

‘Don’t,’ he whimpered. Fear trembled in his voice. ‘I have two children, a wife.’

She growled, psyching herself up.

‘Prima quattuor invocare unum,’ she said, as she grabbed him, jerking him upwards and castrating him with one swinging motion.

She held the bloody remains up in the air.

His screams of terror and pain vibrated through the room as blood spurted two feet high. A foul smell followed and the man’s words became a babbling.

Lord Bidoner held his nose. He’d seen enough. He went out to the main room of the apartment, with its view towards the glittering Jazz-era spire of the Empire State Building.

‘You did good, my dear. The first offering has been done correctly,’ he said, when Xena joined him.

She was panting.

‘Come here.’

He pushed her up against the inch-thick glass of the window, as Manhattan glittered behind them.

Afterwards, he handed her a balloon glass containing a large shot of Asbach 21. She sipped the brandy, then downed it in one gulp.

Then she lay down on the sleek oak coffee table that dominated the room. The canyon of lights stretching into the velvet Manhattan night reflected all the way along the length of the table and onto her ebony skin.

He reached down and stroked her shoulder. It was trembling.

‘Three more before the moon rises again. That is what the book says. That is what we will do.’

She smiled up at him. Her white teeth shone as she leaned her head back and stretched.

Turn Towards The Sun (Sunflower Trilogy book 1) by Jennifer Domenico @jendomenico #Review @GCReading

This book is the first in a trilogy. It contains adult language and content. Ava Bradshaw is on a plane going to Arizona. She is leaving her old Colorado life behind to pursue a new beginning. On the plane she encounters someone sort of snarky, Enzo. She has no idea who he is, but it turns out he is the George Clooney of Arizona and the architectural world. Being Ava is stuck in first class sitting next to this handsome man, torture right? My heart was bleeding for her

When she was upgraded to first class she thought maybe things were on the way up but no! Things go wrong. Her apartment is rented but she has no belongings. The movers will be delayed 3 days. Tjings happen when Ava is invited to stay at Girasole with Enzo. It turns out he is the owner. She is aloof to his charms and reminds herself that she made a personal promise NO sex for one year.

The author creates a wonderful romance between these two people. There is a lot of angst here and so much steam. I am in love with this author’s style and penchant for creating a family with the Milano’s. one of many children, Enzo is surrounded by brothers and sisters who all have successful careers in many different creative ways. My fave was Franchesca aka Checca. She is the designer of Girasole and she is perfect. I really want more of the family.

What she didn’t plan on was meeting the intense Italian family, his giving heart, or falling in love. Enzo Milano a dream man, no?

Jennifer Domenico

Jennifer Domenico started writing as a five-year old child in the back of her mother’s bible in church. It was a way to keep the fidgety child quiet but even then she took simple stories and twisted them into even more imaginative tales. As she grew, the stories grew with her and she filled notebook after notebook with her musings. As an adult, she knew she wanted to be a writer but she lacked the attention span and inspiration required to produce a full length story. Eventually she put away her notebooks and turned her attention to the business world where she toiled away for many years. She stopped reading fiction, stopped entertaining her outlandish imagination, and stopped dreaming of being a writer. Until one day, many months ago she went to sleep and a beautiful love story played out in her dreams. When she awoke she felt compelled to write it down. And she wrote and she wrote, for days and days she wrote. The result is part one of Enzo and Ava’s story. Turn Towards the Sun is her first, but certainly not her last, novel. Ms. Domenico lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her very Italian husband, a dog that adores her, two cats that tolerate her, and wicked sweet tooth. She is currently working on part two in the series.

Virginia Costello’s story continues in,
Book Two: Georgia Girl ~ A Southern Series ~

After her journey to visit family in Book One ~ Meet Virginia ~
Virginia returns to where her heart and soul live, Atlanta Georgia. Glad to be home from a much needed break from her life and the realization some things never change regarding family ties and expectations. And for this first time in her life, she knows and understands it’s okay to be who, what and how you are and love yourself for that.

After returning to Atlanta, Virginia realizes she has been blind to more aspects of her life than she originally expected. After more than a few issues are brought to her attention, Virginia no longer feels the need to take flight from the situations she cannot control, but to stand and start fighting to get her life back in order again.

Honesty hurts in more ways than one; sometimes we have to hurt ourselves in the process of finding and fighting for who we are, even if it means hurting other people in our fight for understanding your own journey in finding peace and life balance.

Unexpected guests, sensual pleasures along with back stabbing friendships are on the forefront in this story. Confrontation is an issue no one likes, but is sometimes needed to see beyond the smoke and mirrors some people feel safe living behind. After all who needs to live a life of lies and deceit? There is an old saying “The truth shall set you free.” Even though we all know the truth can and will crush you in its wake.

Victory Run 1 (The Story of Victory Payne #1) by Devon Hartford @DevonHartford #Review

I’m so happy I’ve got the next book. So this was released in a different way. It is like a cliffhanger that will hurt badly until you realize that book 2 is out. Victory Payne is a guitar hero in a gorgeous female form. Victory has a few jagged edges that I liked. She is nothing like other rock stars in other books. So if you want a fresh and unique look at this life then grab it. I thought the story, plot and characters were hot and fresh. Victory was done wrong and she is strong enough to survive.  is the hottest lead guitar player on the night club scene of Hollywood’s infamous Sunset Strip. With nothing but her car and her guitar, she’s ready to claw her way to success. Victory never gives up. Scott was a turd and Im sad he broke her little heart but better things are ahead for Victory, I cant say what but yes it is a good helping of drama and angst!

Victory Payne, meet Kellan Burns.

BOOM I wish I knew the music in this book but I clearly listen to far too much rap. I did Google several of the videos though and was surprised it was a little more main stream than I thought.

Ladies, you will need a fire extinguisher for this one.

A lot of people ask me, “Why is a guy writing romance novels for women?” The answer is simple. Everyone falls in love. Even men. Imagine that. 😉

But it goes deeper than that. I write romance to explore and understand my own emotions.

No matter what most guys say on the subject, emotions are a part of the human experience for women AND men. Guys who deny their emotions, especially the difficult ones like sadness, grief, loss, and hurt, are missing out on a big part of life. Everyone has emotional scars. It’s impossible to make it from cradle to grave without getting banged up along the way. For all that pain, we can also heal ourselves.

My stories feature characters who are on a quest to heal their pain, and in the process, find love. We all know that a loving relationship can be a conduit for both partners to heal together. When that happens, it’s truly a beautiful thing.

It’s my hope that my readers can gain some perspective regarding their own emotional wounds, and perhaps heal in some small way by going through the emotional journey I went through while writing my stories.

Victory Run 1 (The Story of Victory Payne #1) by Devon Hartford @DevonHartford

There’s only one rule in Rock & Roll: Don’t sleep with anyone in the band.

Victory Payne is the hottest lead guitar player on the night club scene of Hollywood’s infamous Sunset Strip. With nothing but her car and her guitar, she’s ready to claw her way to success. Victory never gives up.

Then she breaks rock’s cardinal rule. She falls in love with her lead singer, the gorgeous and brooding Scott Walker. That is mistake number one.

Mistake number two is a roadblock named Kellan Burns. Kellan is primed to claim the title of hottest lead guitar player in Los Angeles with his rugged good looks and his own guitar slung as low as his tight jeans. Kellan isn’t the kind of guy to let some upstart babe with a six string stand in his way.

Victory Payne, meet Kellan Burns.  BOOM. Ladies, you will need a fire extinguisher for this one.

A Peek at Bathsheba (The David Chronicles, #2) by Uvi Poznansky @UviPoznansky #Review

a peak at bethesda 22608503

Uvi Poznansky gets yet another five big stars from me.  I really enjoyed this book more because I have just came off a few Rock Band type reads and I felt educated in reading this.

“A Peek at Bathsheba” by Uvi Poznansky is so different from other books I have read. It’s a blending of history, non-fiction and fiction. I truly enjoyed the author’s style. For the first time in a long time I didn’t see grammar issues, run on sentences or typos.

David is a very complex and difficult character to learn about. Here the author takes much of his persona and creates a tale based on some classics. I don’t want people to think this is a religious novel. It is much more of a creation based on the King we know as David. Apart from the David I am aware of I learned about some personal tragedy here too. It sort of slides along a thin line of what you think is actual history and what you think is actual fiction. David was a writer, an amazing musician, a poet, and so much more.

What I loved was how we see him and his wives, which is a different concept to me. I liked him falling in love. I still find it hard to believe it was a cultural thing to have more than one spouse, but who knows maybe more people should!

IF you want another very well written novel that inspires thinking, then yes grab this one. I think people who like history based reads will just love it. If you like history with a political type undertone, then grab it.

Vanquish by S.J. McGran @SJMcGran #Review #debut

I feel blessed to have found another fabulously written debut novel. This was just freakin great! I loved the characters so much but the writing was better. There were a few great treats like Zhoe and Jared the main characters. Zhoe is a grounded, smart and loving girl who goes to school and volunteers. What more could you want from a well off girl? OH the fact that she is well off but doesnt act like it. She drinks dark beer and eats famous “Lonestar burgers” I found her easy and relate able.
As for her best friend Angelica, she is the same way. They are great best friends and have a really good friendship. Right about the 30% mark I loved how the author paired these girls. They are not opposites, but share a lot of the fundamentals that balance a great friendship. There is A LOT of steam here. Very good and very well placed steam. I liked it and it was just the right amount, the right degree, and at the right times.

As for the men, well I loved Jared. His name alone makes we swoon. Jared is a construction worker and has a secret. The secret is BAD, YUP its BAD. The suspense waiting is about to reach maximum when the author dropped the bomb. Yes it was great.

Rico is Richard, so I loved the nic name there too. He is Jared’s best friend and they share a common bond, cant say what binds them but it is a great plot device.

Quotes I loved:

I know I don’t love her yet, but there is no doubt that I could love this girl. I could fall head over heels for her. I could love her with every ounce of my shattered soul if I’m not careful

JARED = SWOON

“I let my girl sleep somewhere other than my arms last night.”
