First Kiss by Ann Marie Frohoff @rockinwriterchk #review

ENTER to win I am giving away five copies of both books in the series

First Kiss (A Heavy Influence Novel, #1) Well I am so sad to end this book. I will say BEST BOOK I have READ.When you write a review and think about a character for a day to decide what to write that is when it is EPIC. The blending of love, angst, hate and heart break was perfect. When you say this was a five star book it means something left a great impression on you, the characters spoke, the author had style and communicated the message perfectly. This was the case for me. Even though I gasped and cursed it is a sign that the message was there. What I loved was of course the main characters. You MUST read book 1 it is short and it pissed me off that it was short, but it was just a set-up for this book. I got done last night and I actually sat here thinking all day what to write. This was the best book. I hope you know I dont say that often but I was so touched by it. So Jake and Alyssa live next door to each other and were besties growing up and then things took off for Jake and his band. So they just passed each other and then BAM fate happens and they started to talk again. Should I tell you who else I loved? Ok I loved Rachel, yeah I know right? She was with Jake in a momentary lapse in judgement at the beginning of the book. Not giving a spoiler here. Anyways she is the girl you love to hate. I did hate her and I tried so hard to think what if I was in her shoes, desperately in love with Jake, helping him and the band for 2 years, and then sex, drama and no relationship. But I loved how the authors style made me sympathize and then totally hate her to the point I wanna stab her with a pencil repeatedly. Alyssa’s sister who is older, yes I was made me dislike her too. The Allison story was great once her reveal came. I was wondering why I just “didn’t like” as opposed to I hated her. Kyle was my dude. How he loved his sister and covered for her and let her see Jake, well it makes me wish I had a brother.    I loved the Nicole and Nadine- the dialogue the friendship. A girl needs best friends like that. I think of my girls in Brooklyn and we were/still like that. There were so many memories that came back when I was reading their little gossip fest topics. 5b804-jakeandallyimageforfkbookcover Marshall and Bobby were so good.Bobby in the band as well as Mike (grrr growling like a pitbull) and Dumpster aka Dump. All of them had the best supporting roles. Now there was Sienna too. She was Dump’s girl and Rachel’s bff. Now she was a BFF but there is a big BUT, she was so fair and called Rachel out on things. Dump did too, he was a neanderthal but to Sienna, OMG he loved her. Aly and Jake were so perfect. I could care less about the age difference. The sneaking around and the drama was great. Notting (English dude with a really strange name)and Kate were very complex too. Jakes Dad passed away a long time ago. His Mom and his manager “had a thing” but they never made anything big or official. It has to be read and discussed. The author is golden! She has so many fantastic tunes in the book and they are going to come out too. Squeals if delight! I loved the songs! I want it to be big. We have to do something to get the word out. I am doing my part for sure. So the last reason is the story of love, health, growing up and redemption. We all fall down and some of us dont get up for a while. Some of us bounce right back. The story of love is epic and one that must be read. I know people would dis agree, but sometimes you do find the one.I feel like I am babbling but I love Jake. 5 stars This is a passage and it shows the depth that I look for in a book: “The sun hung low, casting a hue of golden tones over everything it touched. It was a luminous late afternoon and the intense heat was finally subsiding. Staring at the water, I wanted to go swimming. I was overwhelmed with mixed emotions, and the water would be a soothing remedy. I felt drunk. Drunk love, was that what I was high on? Was I in love? Was this what being in love felt like? I was almost certain it was”   HOW long until the next book??? The Fall???

The Author extraordinaire:

ann marie frohoff 5211881

Ann Marie (“Annie”) Frohoff grew up in sunny Southern California. As a teen and young adult she spent her time frequenting and living in nearly every beachside city up and down the coast. She settled in Hollywood at 19 working in film and TV. Soon her itch to keep moving took over again, taking her to Hawaii for a time and then back to LA. She’s now settled in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Her wanderlust and propensity to live life out loud has brought her many life experiences so many of us only dream about. Always the storyteller, it would be of no surprise to those who grew up with Annie, that she made the transition into a book and screenplay author. You could say that she woke up one day and had an epiphany, deciding to go to school for screenwriting. It’s with this inner fire she set out to write her first screenplay. Soon after, such work made it into the hands of an agency creative executive who challenged her to write a novel to support the complex ensemble cast of characters she’d created. Thus, after only a couple of years and many hours on the road immersing herself in her subject matter; her edgy modern day “Walk The Line meets John Hughes Classics” debut novella, SKID OUT, has been completed, along with the first installment in her Trilogy. SKID OUT is the prequel novella to the HEAVY INFLUENCE TRILOGY. The first installment in her Heavy Influence Trilogy, FIRST KISS, is set to release June 11th 2013 — The series is a story about young, reckless love between a rising rock star and his younger muse, spanning 10 years of their tumultuous and passionate relationship. Each book in the Trilogy will come with a soundtrack of original music, of which the lyrics will appear in the pages of the books. (Alternative Rock Genre). Annie has now also delved into the supernatural fantasy world with her writing partners Shaun Barger and songwriter/musician Matthew Reich. Taking inspiration directly from song lyrics and building an entire realm of vastly complex characters and plot lines; weaving history, fantasy and heavy doses of romance together. You will be kept turning the pages of “The Zodiac Wars: My Gemini” novellas and “Precious Metal: The Prince and the Gypsy” book series. Both series of books are currently in development. Love and the Punk Rock Grrl by K.H. Alynn

love and the punk rock grrl 17789262

Book Description
Publication Date: April 7, 2013
It’s 1982, and 17-year-old Rudi Weiss is a tough girl living in the tougher streets of Irvington, NJ–with her life centered around alienation, drugs, and punk rock.

Though this changes when she’s caught selling pot and given a choice: either spend the rest of her childhood in juvenile detention or move in with an ex-Marine and his family in the nearby affluent suburb of Maplewood.

There at the local high school, the wild and free-thinking Rudi disrupts the entire established order. And she especially disrupts Tommy Goodwin, a rich and popular preppy who’s seemingly her opposite.

But underneath their veneers, they are much the same–two lost souls desperately in search of something. And when they find it, it explodes everything around them.

Something that’s only exasperated when Rudi’s past catches up with them, in this magical and bittersweet tale of unexpected love.

Available exclusively at Amazon, Love and the Punk Rock Grrl is the first in a series of books about a larger-than-life woman with lots of attitude, and even more soul.

4 half star blog book

Review:

I am never critical to an extreme so I get a pass on this one I think anyways. The book surprised me and it was good. It was the cover. If I was back in the day at a book store and saw the cover I dont think I would even look at the cover to see what it was about. That makes me sad. This needs some marketing and it will be pretty popular.

The premise that starts with Rudi and drugs is pretty good too. Rudi, a female punk rock chick gets arrested for selling drugs to an undercover cop. Growing up in this era it was a draw for me. I won’t go and give you a mini book here. I will say that the arrest is a change in Rudi’s path. The consequences and punishment cause a chain reaction of gossip, ridicule, and her own self doubt. Of course when you read it you will understand the choice she makes cause way too much doubt and constantly thinking “what if”.

The interest in Tommy is cool too. He is different and persistent to say the least. I guess it is sort of the bad girl appeal at first. I wonder if that was a draw for me too.

I am thrilled I read it and hope to see more from this author!

March official book trailer

What is in a title? Apple March, hence the title March. I loved the cover. I really enjoy seeing something so professionally done that it looks very visually appealing. Sometimes you can judge the book by the cover. In this case it was true. The book was a great debut. This book is written by an Aussie. So for us American people, the grammar and the punctuation are not the same. I hate when I read a review and people turn into the grammar police without knowing that they don’t “quote” the way we do. So for the narratives, get that rule before you jump in.

anna wintour quotes

Apple went to the country’s most prestigious fashion school. It is like saying I am working for Anna Wintour, or I am pulling for Harper’s Bazaar. That is the primo kind of school Apple went to. For now she is behind the register at a retail store. At 29 that is nothing to be happy about, but she is content. Why? OMG you know I want to squeal. Now there is a reveal that gets the spark back in Apple. Something happens to make her realize her dream,s. Her best friend Jackson has some of the BEST one liners and I must create another post for her. There is a secret, that has been holding her back and so is the threat of her past.

smiles question mark

Take a journey from Melbourne to New York and Paris with Apple. If you are a fashion lover and have ever read Vogue, this is your cup of tea. When you are at a style house the creative flow is really minimal, it is about the line and the designers view. Apple wants her own vision and of course what else, but the one man to share it with.

anna wintour
A really great example of the fashion world from a design standpoint. I think the author wrote a genre appealing book. It is a pleasure to read such a fine example with such a fine future ahead of her. I can not wait to see what she will write next. A debut like this, you don’t want to miss.

Modern Suburbia By Chris Merlo @ChrismMerlo #spotlight #debut

Cover for 'Modern Suburbia'

Published: March 21, 2013
Words: 70,148 (approximate)
Language: English
ISBN: 9781301183210

Set in the fictional suburb of Teal County,it seems to be filled with every form of entertaining consumption one could desire. Expenses were not spared in producing this lavish and clean looking suburb, along with creating an effective and expanded judicial and policing system and a wide and over reaching corporate industry.

But not everyone finds Teal County to be so fantastic. A young man by the name of Nathan Grant, who has a bitter love-hate relationship with the County he was raised in, is heading back after a long absence in hopes of finishing one last job, part of which includes transporting a very valuable item. The crudeness of the County officials had ironically been both the inspiration for his plans, and now was an abrupt interruption to them, as his freedom in the County is cut short just as soon as he arrives.

From there, the story’s woven tapestries begins to unravel, and we find foes of Nathan with a set of their own agendas in mind, as well as friends willing to help. With the aid of his friends, Emily, a highly attractive party going drug user, and Aiden, a capable well to do computer genius, among others, Nathan must prevail through the hurdles made by County authorities that stand in his way as he tries to complete a task for Martin Benson, a sleazy corporate high roller. Little does Benson know, Nathan has a few alternative plans of his own for Benson, and little does Nathan know, he might be getting into more hot water than he bargained for. After it is revealed Benson has ties with Falco Dietrich, a German terrorist, along with a handful of his cohorts, and it would also seem the highly effective FBI team of Agent’s Simms and Harris has secretly had an eye on Benson for quite some time, several culminating moments of action and deceptions determine the fates of these characters. All while in the midst of negotiating through the complexities of the modern suburb of Teal County. But even when cornered, Nathan proves his wide knowledge of the town he grew up in can give him a tricky advantage, and that he may have more than one motive for why he chose to target Benson in his plans.

My name is Chris Merlo and I am a 33 year old suburbanite, born and raised, which might hint as to the inspiration for my book. I’m an athletic and eclectic type who enjoys the deliciousness of all that the arts has to offer, which includes the art of writing. I have written poems, essays, speeches, songs, short stories, and now my first novel. Another passion of mine is friends and family, and I love being around people and the social life – consider me like a social butterfly. It seems there’s not enough time in one day to do all of the things my hyper ADD mind would like to do, but being busy is certainly something I’m good at. Life is rarely boring for me.

Better Together by Nicola May @nicolamay1 #review

Better Together

Jess is nearly 40 when she meets Dan Harris at a party. She is single, sorted, happy – with a great job and a buzzy social and sex-life. All of this is threatened when she falls deeply in love with Dan, who is only 23.

Jess, being older, recognises this as the real, precious thing – but in his immaturity, Dan does not. Unable to cope with the stigma of being with an older woman, he eventually leaves her.

Ten years pass…

Jess, who is still gorgeous at 50, is married now, with a child of her own. They meet again. The years fall away.
This time, Dan understands – but is it too late?

My review:

Well I really enjoyed this one. There were parts that made me so sad and parts that I yelled at the book. sometimes walking away from someone is the hardest thing to do and Jess killed me when she did that. I think the love of her life was there, and so what he was younger! I was filled with angst!

I was being a little selfish thinking that I wanted more. I think the book could have been longer. One of my favorite quotes was “Being honest with you, Jess, I actually arranged to see Dave later as I knew that we’d be at it like rabbits if not. And as I am officially on the rebound, that wouldn’t be acceptable, now would it?

I think I hit a little jackpot meeting this author. Now I set out to read the rest of the books and plan a bundle giveaway! She needs to get some press from the states ladies read on!!

Image

My Quotes and Notes

‘Being honest with you, Jess, I actually arranged to see Dave later as I knew that we’d be at it like rabbits if not. And as I am officially on the rebound, that wouldn’t be acceptable, now would it?’

She wanted to taunt this man, who had so readily dismissed her, the minute she had told him she was pregnant with his child. She was so lucky to have met Dan when she did, and was so easily able to pass Evie off as his. ‘Of course I haven’t told him. I’m not that stupid.

‘I don’t care.’ Jess said her voice beginning to crack. ‘I love being with you. It’s the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. You make me…’ She was lost for words. ‘We’re better together that’s all.’ She couldn’t contain her tears any longer.

Sam waved his beautiful wife and daughter off of the drive. Tears stung his eyes at the nature of his betrayal. What on earth was he thinking? How could he possibly even think of leaving this wonderful woman, adorable child and settled life behind for what?

It was incomprehensible; Sam was the father of Dan’s child! How could that be?

At least now, with him gone from their lives, she and Freya could move on, with no deceit hanging over them. Just pure honesty, trust and love.

My Review:

I think I liked it because it had a lesson and left me happy, not longing for the next book to come out. I think as I was growing up, having 2 sisters, at one time or another you wanted to switch places. Now all of us resembled each other, but could never be a twin.  I will say that there is an alternating POV and usually I hate those, but this was real time, not past versus present. So for that reason I was cool with it. I will say that Bryn passes away. I guess it is no secret that this is the premise of the book.

smiles angel

Now when confronted with the choice of becoming Bryn and stating the truth, well that is hard. It is choice Jesse has to carefully choose. The fact that I liked the characters, Quentin and Bryn were perfect. I really enjoyed the personal war Jesse starts to have. She sort of goes with it and doesn’t justify her choice or lack of a choice. That is something I liked and the reason why I feel, she was likable.

I won’t say that this is a light book, it is not. The overall writing is great, the characters are too, the message is there. I really liked how the high school drama plays out. The teenage mind is a mystical thing. The way Jesse chooses her path is great. The redeeming qualities of her character were my favorite part. The other was the young adult part was pretty pg and for that I am thankful, no need to tarnish the book with a lot of smut. I like smut, but this didn’t call for it. I say read it now!

The Texas Twist by John Vorhaus @TrueFactBarFact

the texas twist

THE TEXAS TWIST follows the (continuing) adventures of world-class con artist Radar Hoverlander and his band of merry misfits as they set out (this time) to answer the pressing question, “What happens when a con man gets conned?” Like all my books, it’s a fast, funny, easy read with engaging characters, plot twists up the wazoon, and lots of interesting made-up words (like wazoon). Here’s a taste:

Vic walked to the others and drew them in close, conspiratorial. “Now look,” he said, “this guy Radar Hoverlander is a little twitchy, right? Off the charts brilliant, but totally paranoid. So be cool with him. He’s taken a lot of heat for his ideas, as you can imagine, and he won’t naturally believe that you trust him.”

“What makes you think we do?” asked Allie, her voice intentionally sounding like honey spiked with bees. The mark, meanwhile, looked on agog — just as he was intended to.

“You’ve seen the prospectus,” said Vic. “You’ve seen the computer models.”

“I once saw a monkey play Mozart,” said Allie. “Doesn’t mean I’m sending it to Juilliard.”
If this sort of sneaky, snarky world appeals to you, I promise you’ll have great fun with THE TEXAS TWIST and/or with the guest blog post or author interview I’ll be happy to provide. Just send up a signal flare and I’ll respond within nanoseconds, by having my publisher send you a review copy (e- or dead tree-) and/or doing that guest post/author interview thingie. Just say, “Boy, howdy, JV, that sounds great,” and we can start making common cause.

THE TEXAS TWIST streets in June from Prospect Park Books. I’m standing by now to meet all of your review/interview/guest post needs at the drop of the merest request. You’ll find more about me, my bona fides, and my twisted history at johnvorhaus.com, and you’ll find the book’s full boilerplate below.

MONEY IS JUST HOW YOU KEEP SCORE

For world-class con artist Radar Hoverlander and his gang of gifted grifters, making money has never been much of a problem. If anything, the game has gotten too good – and taking candy from babies is starting to wear thin. Besides, there are other things to think about. Allie Quinn, Radar’s girlfriend and key con partner, is pregnant, and his quirky sidekick, Vic Mirplo, has decided to write a tell-all exposé about life on the razzle. But “life is what happens while you’re making other plans,” and before they know it, Radar and the crew find themselves defending a cute, sexy neighbor against the advances of a scam artist selling fake medical miracles. It’s when they discover who the scammer’s real target that things take a real turn for the weird.
Readers of The California Roll and The Albuquerque Turkey know what to expect from a Radar Hoverlander adventure: deft prose, rampant laughs, taut plotting, and enough twists and turns to make the head explode. Climb aboard – the double-cross express is about to get underway!

After their last big con netted them a nice chunk of change, Radar Hoverlander and his grifter girlfriend, Allie Quinn, have vowed to go straight. But Radar’s fragile commitment to clean living is put to the test when an oddly hefty lady in red shows up and stalks him through the streets of Santa Fe. Except that’s no lady—it’s Radar’s dad, Woody Hoverlander, a world class con artist in his own right.

Radar correctly figures if his dad is in drag, he must be in trouble. Woody is on the lam, with a Vegas hard guy after him and a large debt to clear. To help him, Radar must break his vow to leave cons behind—and risk losing Allie, who is determined to protect their nest egg and steer clear of bad influences.

The California Roll
by John Vorhaus

What do the Merlin Game, the Penny Skim, the Doolally Snadoodle, and the Afterparty Snuke have in common? They’re all the work of world-class con artist and master bafflegabber Radar Hoverlander. Radar’s been “on the snuke” since childhood, but he’s still looking for his California Roll, the one big scam that’ll set him up in sushi for life.

Trouble arrives in the stunning, sassy package of Allie Quinn—either the last true innocent or a con artist so slick she makes Radar look like a Quaker. Radar’s hapless sidekick, Vic Mirplo, a lovable loser who couldn’t con a kid out of a candy cane, thinks Radar’s being played. But if love is blind, it’s also deaf, dumb and stupid, and before Radar knows it, he’s sucked into a vortex of double-, triple-, quadruple-crosses that’ll either net him his precious California Roll or put him in a hole in the ground.

As timeless as a perpetual-motion machine, as timely as a Madoff arraignment, The California Roll brings you deep inside the world of con artistry, where every fact is fiction and the second liar never has a chance.

After Math by Denise Grover Swank @DeniseMSwank @tale_of_reviews

After Math (Off the Subject, #1)

The title of the book is GREAT! Why? It is a play on words After Math like after math class or aftermath like after the big reveal! WOW I loved it and I cried, then loved it more! Scarlett Goodwin’s world is divided into Before and After. This was one of the MOST accurate portrayals of anxiety and panic disorders I have read. This girl had her entire life turned upside down. The only thing that ruled her world was fear and panic. She wanted the math center to get a special grant, so she agrees to tutor Tucker price, also known as man whore.

Scarlett is a loner, and has a close friend Caroline who is her room mate. Caroline understands Scarlett and is the only one who she can turn to. The triggers are not clear but one thing that she uses to sooth her is math. She thinks in absolute equations, any problem has an answer and it has a calming effect.

Scarlett Goodwin, junior at Southern University, math major, coerced into tutoring Tucker

What happens when she agrees to tutor Tucker? She knows the lab needs the grant and being asked by the head of the math department makes the situation unavoidable. Can Scarlett find happiness with anyone? Will Tucker’s life and reputation turn her into a panic stricken shut in? Will she be caught in Tucker’s aftermath?

Fashion Shot of a Young Man

Tucker a soccer star? Maybe He might be better as a gym teacher or coach? What his dreams and life goals are will shock Scarlett.

It is a very emotional and powerful book. I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Just One Cup Cover

Blurb-

Emma Walker was a writer who’d lost herself to someone else’s anger–who had given up on ever feeling like herself again.

Evan Levesque was a rock-god–the one all the woman wanted, but he’d never gotten used to the loneliness between the stage and real life.

With just one cup of coffee they’ll begin a journey of self-discovery at each others sides, but can Emma handle Evan’s fame while dealing with her own demons? Emma’s checkered personal past, a bad relationship that haunts the edges of her memories, threatens to make everything implode on them when Evan takes matters into his own hands.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but your words…they’ll destroy my soul–Can Emma handle being put back together and facing who she’s become because of it?

Cassandra doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t writing. In fact, the first time she was published was when she was seven years old and won a contest to be published in an American Girl Doll novel. Since than Cassandra has written more novels than she can count and put just as many in the circular bin. Her personal goal with her writing is to show the reader the character’s stories through their dialogue and actions instead of just telling the reader what is happening. In 2012 she became a published Young Adult author, releasing In Between Seasons (The Fall, #1) and Walking in the Shadows. In 2013 she branched out by using her artistic illustrating talents to publish her first Children’s novel, The Adventures of Skippy Von Flippy: Tales of Friendship (Skippy Tales, #1). Cassandra will also release her first New Adult novel, Just One Cup, in the Spring of 2013.
